I think that TF2 is between the "life support" and "The Heavy Update is real". Some Valve employees are clearly maintaining the game out of passion, and while we don't know anything about Heavy Update (or if is even real), there's still a chance it will happen.

It has been brought to my attention that I got the order of 2 of the CoD releases the wrong way around. Rest assured I am taking this matter very seriously and have already handed my Gamer Card over to the Gamer Police and am currently awaiting their verdict. The community is whats keeping tf2 alive

Okay, imagine this, What if The Heavy Update and the final comic come out at the same time, and essentially tie into each other. At the end of the previous comic, I think it's implied that The Administrator is being set up to be the final antagonist, and I think it's more than likley she'll be the final threat to the mercs, even Gray Mann was scared of what she'd do. Whatever her plan is, I imagine it won't be good, and it'll be up to the mercs to stop her. And maybe we'll see this play out in both the comic and in-game, imagine a new map featuring a massive boss fight against The Administrator, which will require both teams to work together. She'd be something beyond the scope of the Halloween bosses, truly the final boss of TF2. There should be one more gimmick to the map, however: One player would have to remain behind and ensure the Administrator's defeat, but at the cost of their own life, much akin to the Sacrifice chapter from Left 4 Dead 2, where one player must remain behind to fend of the zombies while the others escape. Canonically, it's Bill that remains behind to let the others escape, and like L4D2, in the TF comic, I think one of the mercs would have to canonically die in the same way, sacrificing themselves to defeat the Administrator. So far, in the comics, six of the nine mercs have died and come back to life. Sniper was shot by the TFC Sniper and brought back by Medic. Soldier, Pyro and Spy died breifly when the robots drained them of their blood, Scout died breifly and was sent back by God, (unless that was only a hallucination) and Medic was shot by the TFC Heavy, before making a deal with the Devil to come back. That leaves Demoman, Engineer and Heavy as the only ones yet to bite the bullet. And who should make the sacrifice? Well, Heavy, of course. Heavy is pretty much the game's main character, and his whole character revolves around providing for and protecting his family, and what better way to put an end to the game's lore but for the main character to make the ultimate sacrifice, saving his friends, his family and the world. It would be a stark contrast the the goofiness we've come to expect from the TF series by ending in a bittersweet and heartfelt way. Valve can't keep the game going forever, and it would be in their best interest to have the game go out with a bang rather than a fizzle, and a final update which would blow us all away would be the way to do it. I think so, at least. What would it be called? I'd call it something like the "Heavy Decisions Update," or something like that, reflecting Heavy making the difficult choice to sacrifice himself. Oh, and maybe it should be left ambiguous whether or not Heavy actually dies, maybe they'll never find his body or maybe there's a scene where Spy notices his Dead Ringer is missing, or something. Maybe Heavy Weapons Guy will die, but ol' Misha lives on.

I'm glad you touched on the fact that the game isn't "dead" so long as the servers are still standing. And honestly, the community does a lot to keep this game alive via non-official means. If you haven't looked at Team Fortress 2 Classic, you absolutely should! Additionally, I've heard from Valve News Network that some programmers took it upon themselves to fix bugs from the Team Fortress 2 source code that was leaked, and went as far as to send those fixes to Valve! I haven't checked to see if that went anywhere, but it's promising to hear there are community members out there willing to debug the game.

Valve should do what mojang is doing, hiring creators to work on the project from the community. In case you missed the latest minecraft release video it shows that they have officially hired the creator of the aether mod for minecraft a very loved modder in the community.

I just realized that TF2 is Valves child: they took care of it when it was young, taught it life lessons, and watched it leave the house and it had a self sustaining life.

Eh, I wouldn’t say “Valve owes us nothing.” People only buy cosmetics because they assume they’ll be able to use them for a long time, so there’s an unwritten expectation of “I’m buying this cause I want to use it.” That said, valve doesn’t owe us *much.* We’re not entitled to massive updates, we’re not entitled to constant communication, & we need to realize that *eventually* support will be dropped.

The good thing about it is that no matter which of these scenarios you've mentioned will take place, TF2 will stay alive longer than some of us probably expect.

There's clearly a decent handful of developers who truly find this game their passion. Just sadly most can't do beyond simple bug fixing until the big men upstairs either send more "mann-power" or give the green go ahead.

I think that valve needs to break the silence. They need to be transparent about what's going on, so they can keep their current fans around. A cliffhanger only works if there are trailers for the next movie. Right now, we are still waiting for any sort of trailer, any message, any ARG. We want something. ANYTHING.

To be honest, I don't think heavy really needs an update. He has pretty well defined strengths and weaknesses, and if you use his strengths he is REALLY powerful. Heavy is different than other classes because he is slow, so poor positioning is easily punishable. On the other hand, good timing and positioning can wipe out multiple enemies in seconds. Because of this polarity between Heavy being extremely punishing vs easy to punish, any changes that Valve makes would have to be tested and tested and tested to not break the game balance. There is a reason why there are few continuous-damage hitscan shooters in TF2 - they're EXTREMELY good at area denial (the Heavy and the sentry gun). You cannot dodge continuous fire like you can dodge pipes and rockets. Making Heavy stronger comes at a cost of making movement-reliant characters much less fun, and that can kill a game that's based on skilled movement. I love playing Heavy and he doesn't feel weak to me. It's a different playstyle than Soldier and Scout but it is definitely rewarding once you learn it.

Left 4 Dead 2's Last Stand update was made by the community, for the community, made by people who were passionate about the game. Why can't we get that for TF2?

Never before has there been a game with so many possibilities but so little attention

every day, i keep thinking "if games keep evolving and valve doesn't keep releasing updates for the game, tf2 would be dead in the next few years" but then i look at counter-strike, team fortress classic, half life deathmatch, they're all old games, on a very old engine, and yet you can still find a good handful of servers on there, and sometimes even find 50+ if we're talking about cs, tf2 will not die, it'll simply just fall off of mainstream gaming, and if a man dies when he is forgotten, then a game will die when no one is playing it.

i think valve are just known for not updating as frequent as these other companies, i mean consider how long half life 3 took, and l4d 2 just got a huge update. i think valve are working on stuff for tf2 like Christmas and a huge bug fix, but they aren't vocal about it. to them this stuff is lot of content and to be fair it kinda is but since we have all these newer games that update weekly it doesn't seem as big tbh. i dont think tf2, csgo or l4d2 are going anywhere unless they plan to make a tf3, l4d3 or csgo2

One thing, While the source this comes from isn't entirely reliable. Its been said that the main TF2 devs (Eric, Jill and the third guy I forgot the name of) Want/wanted to Dial back the scale of updates significantly, As they hate how big updates are expected to be now. As they want to dial updates back to the size of Gold Rush, The Scout Update Etc Etc. Makes me really wonder if the reason we haven't gotten an full update in any capacity, Is because no one at valve feels like they can live up to the hype. And lets face it, Too much of the community is spoiled so if we got smaller Gold Rush style updates, They would whine and call Valve lazy for not doing updates the size of Jungle Inferno

I do have hope however that tf2 will get something, mann power got updated out of passion (because really who cares about that gamemode) so why can't the whole game get updated out of passion. Best ending: Heavy update proves to be a massive success, far more than anyone predicted. The combination of memes and votes makes Heavy smash Ultimate's newest character, further increasing player count and tf2's popularity. With this huge wave of success Valve decides to revamp tf2's comp scene like Dota and Csgo. While there are bugs, Valve commits to it and soon tf2's comp scene is on the level of Csgo and Dota. The 6s meta dies as weapons get rebalanced and with it's new comp scene, dominates its field, shooting past Overwatch in the world of class based, fps esports. Tf2's player count is now on par with Csgo's and as tf2 keys are still tradable, boosts the in game economy, making tf2's key the centralized currency for both Csgo and Dota. With this comes even more players (in the form of traders), invested in the in game economy as Valve takes steps to stabilize this new market by giving more attention to tf2, fixing more exploits, making sure there are no hackers/scammers, and pumping out more new items more frequently to keep the economy going. This huge success also draws more content creators and in a positive feedback loop, brings more attention to the game and more attention from Valve. Tf2 enters a second golden age like back in 2010 as new game modes and frequent updates become common. It will be another 10 years before the community faces anything similar to what we're facing now.

I honestly don’t even think we need big updates anymore. All we really need is every couple of months valve implements a patch which will add weapon changes/balances, new maps, or new weapons. It doesn’t have to be all three at once so valve isn’t “overwhelmed” with TF2 but it would be a good breath of fresh air for TF2. It would keep the community active with map makers and item makers and will bring players back every couple of months. These updates don’t even need to be themed, just add in a weapon or two for each class, 3 or 4 maps, and some balances. Obviously this is just a wish and knowing valve it won’t come true but a man can hope

My personal wish: Stop making big updates that might never see the light of they because of how Valve works and maybe just do little updates like adding one or two weapons, an update about balacing the weapons, mayeb a new map (like the Halloween but for the entire year and not only for october) or fixing major bugs instead of the little ones. Just extreem wishfull thinking but I don't want to wait years for something that might be scrapped so easily.

Considering the recent update that updated Mannpower, it is clear that there are people who are still passionate for TF2 who work at Valve (even if it is for a relatively obscure and less played gamemode). Perhaps TF2 could get small updates that are worked on by only a few TF2 members who focus on one area to work on at a time. While it isn’t some grand major update we are all expecting, but it still is welcome new content

It might be the possibility of porting the game to Source 2 after the full development of CS2 in the summer. Or maybe they are working in the background right now. Who knows. But for now, we need to wait.

My opinion on this issue is that valve is going to see how a really good community update will affect the game looking at the reception of the l4d2 community update they might think that the community of tf2 could implement the fixes and such that we are clamoring for along with the heavy update

I feel like the next update will be on 2022 because tf2 created in 2007 then the first major update(mann vs machine)was released in 2012(5 years from creaton)and the next major update is inferno jungle released in 2017(5 years from mann vs machine)now if we count 5 years from 2017 it will lead us to 2022 so i have a feeling it will be in 2022

I would think the correct course of action would be to rebelance most weapons. I would say personally not a lot of weapons fall into well balanced. or at least not the majority. so I think a update about rebalancing. (and maybe fixing the code) would be a good idea. not adding new stuff that would break the game more (not that I woudnt hate new stuff)

most plausible outcome is that we get one valve made update in like 2 ish years and then we slowly switch over to com updates.That or no updates, either way as long as bug fixes are done i doubt most people would mind

I’ve been mostly making maps for the last 10 years to pass time and recently came back to this game after being gone for a while. I’ve been keeping my self entertained by making mvm maps.

Next year for Halloween we need a new boss monster map, Giant Undead Soldier, in honor of Rick May's passing.

I think the best future for the game would be Valve overseeing community updates. There are probably at most a handful of Valve employees working on it right now with ideas for what to do, but not the man power to make it happen. I think they have enough to qc community updates though, and when some decently sized community updates have shipped, maybe the game will get more popular. If the game gets more popular maybe some other people at Valve will see the value in working on TF2 and we could get some big Valve updates. What I would want from them is to make the learning curve easier with a better tutorial and some motivation to keep playing. If the game gets frequent updates and gets a lot more accessible, I think it has the potential to be more popular than it ever has been, maybe one of the most popular games the year this would happen.

As far I know as long there is someone hosting a sever we can play on,someone will be playing it.

What I would like is that they just refine the engine and code, imagine having two robots, the first one is really old and is starting to fall apart, the second one is state of the art and is currently in use, but then the first one breaks down. how about making a brand new robot out of the ashes of the first that is better than the second one. if source 3 does not exist yet I would love it to be a heavily modified version of source 1, where you can copy and paste the code from source 1 and be able to make it great quality to rival or surpass source 2, it would be a great way to recycle and/or modify tf2's already existing code in order to make it less time consuming and less market destroying because if tf2's engine just gets replaced meaning that all items and shit just stays in your inventory, chances are the economy won't collapse again. I do not know much about programming or coding but since Hardware can be comparable to Software. I think it would be like repainting, fixing, and modifying your great granddad's early 1900's truck.
