Actually tyler hoover is pretty smart, not the character "hoovie"... He calculates amount invested in a car + repairs, its current resale value, amount he will lose in resale... & here's the catch 22! He balances amount lost with the ad revenue he will gain from youtube & sponsors. After squeezing every penny from 3-4 videos car will be resold.

The E55 AMG is your best bet if you want a (nearly) 500bhp car. The m113k engine can easily be pushed to 650bhp for very little 💰. Also because it is so simple (no variable valve timing) and has a supercharger it is extremely reliable and easy to modify.

Not sure how BMW could design a car so unreliable with multiple faults that creep up over time. Makes you wonder if they knew about the faults and decided to release the car anyway. Audi could make their 4.2 V8 or 5.2 V10 bulletproof so I don't get why BMW couldn't.

Like Tyler said, it’s the rod bearings that left too small margin for the thick 10W60 oil. Correct the bearings and the root cause of most problems is fixed. I don’t understand either why BMW did design it that way. Mind boggling.

I have the full factory software suite (Rheingold BMW service workshop system) to diagnose and test functions via USB. It works for BMW or Mini. Saved me a lot of guesswork on my '06 Z4 many times. Let me know if you want hooked up with the correct updates. In my opinion, you should replace your coil packs (Bavarian Autosports red coils are worth the money at OEM pricing), plugs and you need to remove and clean VANOS solenoids, and test for leaks in your vacuum and "pollution reduction pipes" which can trigger limp mode.

I honestly don't think the smg is nearly as bad as people say. If you're familiar with driving manuals and think of it as a manual wo the clutch it's pretty decent (meaning manually shift it using the steering wheel pedals). If you drive it as a regular auto then, ya, it's pretty crappy. At full throttle, redline its 70ms shifts are awesomely brutal.

@@TheOriginalLugnuts Ya that's definitely true. I was thinking more from the driveability sense :) I had to change the pump motor on mine and I saw in the dealer history for the car that the whole smg unit was replaced at around 15k miles. BMW states that a lot of their fluids are for life, but I think that's a stretch. Prob changing the hydraulic fluid more often would have saved a lot of smgs.

Besides the other suggestions of checking the crank position sensor or the catalytic converters, another item to check is the fuel pump. If the pump is getting weak, it might not be able to deliver enough fuel at high rpm. That would cause the engine to starve for fuel at high r.p.m. and could set a misfire code.

An Audi mechanic told me about a v10 s6 that was in the dealer for 6 months when it was only a year old car with a mystery problem that would stall the engine. They replaced parts and released the car only to have it keep coming back. Long story short, the engine was so powerful that it would stretch and damage the wiring harness under full throttle. The dealer replaced it complete under warranty but the owner didn’t have his car much that year.

@@fabios6621 Incorrect. Had an '09 M6. SMG trans was garbage. For the engine, used 0w-60 oil only sold at BMW for $15/qt and it used 10 qts. Turns out, using the super heavy oil in climates that get below 60 F causes massive rod bearing wear that then destroys your vanos. BMW caught it 4 years into production and began to warranty the cars but then dropped all support. Completely engineered failure into the motors. I suspect you've never owned an M car.

Don't let the multiple system failures get you down. True story here. I have a 2004 Jaguar XJ8 that had transmission issues, multiple system failures and limp mode. This was in 2013. The Knoxville Jag dealership wanted $4000 to to rebuild the transmission. They wouldn't guarantee it would fix it. This was their best guess after a deep scan. Local Jag wizard replaced the computer for $1000 and fixed all issues. Another time, when all those same faults returned, I opened the air filter compartment, removed a bug and it went back to working. This is after the faults did not clear up after multiple starts. Now it drives like a beauty. These systems fail like dominos. It's not an indication of actual multiple faults.
