Tensions come to a head between dominant chimp Dylan and his young rival Carlos. But keepers are concerned that the fighting between the two could turn vicious - and end in death...
The chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), also known simply as chimp, is a species of great ape native to the forest and savannah of tropical Africa. It has four confirmed subspecies and a fifth proposed subspecies. The chimpanzee and the closely related bonobo are classified in the genus Pan. Evidence from fossils and DNA sequencing shows that Pan is a sister taxon to the human lineage and is humans' closest living relative. The chimpanzee is covered in coarse black hair, but has a bare face, fingers, toes, palms of the hands, and soles of the feet. It is larger and more robust than the bonobo, weighing 40-70 kg (88-154 lb) for males and 27-50 kg (60-110 lb) for females and standing 120 to 150 cm (3 ft 11 in to 4 ft 11 in).
From The Secret Life of the Zoo: This series gives viewers behind the scenes access to Chester Zoo's 21,000 animals and the people who work there. The zoo's keepers are interviewed in each episode about the various animals and incidents, whether it's orangutans escaping their enclosure or tigers getting into scraps.

CHIMPANZEES, They truly are unique but so unpredictable, intelligent, and cunning. I actually have studied chimps for a while and while I do find them fascinating, their unpredictable nature is very unnerving at times. For me personally Orangutans are more subdued, more calm, and their "playfulness" is less painful than a chimpanzees. Even smaller chimps have a tendency to slap hard, and bite. Chimps aren't very good with "sharing", and when they find say a shiny object, or anything that fascinates them they latch on to it. That isn't the issue, it's attempting to retrieve the item, say its keys, or something that could be bad if they eat it or try to. They are also like little kids, everything goes in the mouth. Now they don't realize that your trying to help them. All they see is you want what they have. Their instincts say no, fight for it in a way. So they can be very difficult to convince. They can and do bite. Once the babies get teeth trust me it HURTS! Adult chimps have bitten finger clean off. The babies are absolutely adorable. Little fuzzballs. Fuzzy head, big ears, goofy expressions, and they love being tickled. Their smiles and "laughter" melt your heart, BUT again they are not always cute. I know you probably realize this. There are so many comments on here about killing the, because of their nature. Some even believe chimpanzees hunt and eat people?! I know they are fully capable of killing a human being, but never have I heard of them doing it for food. Never. Now another but, chimps have been know to AND SEEN hunting smaller monkeys for food. Meat is not a normal dietary plan for them. But they have done it, and still do do it. I've seen people wanting chimps being killed for attacks they did. And yes Travis the chimp almost killed a woman. HOWEVER while yes the chimp did attack, should this WILD ANIMAL have been kept like a dog in a home with few countermeasures in case it became angry. That's the one difficult thing is that chimps can "SNAP" at any time for any reason. A smell, a visual reminder of a traumatic experience, a move it sees as aggressive, or any number of things can set them off. These animals are obviously wild, and are not and should not be considered a pet. Now Orangutans are less inclined to be so aggressive, but again NEVER underestimate any animal, wild or domestic, EVER! Orangutans like chimps need their mother's for many years. A Orangutan however is a bit more needy. Both "cry" when afraid. Both hold on to mom, and both yes are adorable as babies. Also both Orangutans and chimpanzees have hands like a vice grip. They both use their hands and feet to climb, hand from trees, and learn to make and use tools to help them eat and survive. They are fascinating, intelligent, comical, goofy, funny, beautiful, and terrifying. A full grown Orangutan may be more "friendly" than a chimp, but when they walk up to you, full grown and take your hand, you feel the intense power and strength they possess and you realize this animal could crush your hand like pretzel logs. SNAP! I've seen so much hatred for chimps, and for a while I saw them as viciously sadistic animals. But WE brought them into a domestic environment. WE(humans) killed their mother's, be it for the Bush meat trade, or for the rainforest land the Palm Oil Plantations are destroying constantly. We have caused them to almost be extinct yet some of us still blame them for being aggressive? One man actually commented about a Chimp who was featured on Animal Planet's show Escape to Chimp Eden. He was rescued by Eugene Cousins(hope that's spelled correctly). The chimp is named Cozi. He is a goof. If you can I recommend watching the series. It is informative, educational, and fun. Back to Cozi. He was kept in a cage inside of a TRAILER. Now Cozi is fully grown, but this was a cage for a Large Parrot 🦜. Cozi could stand up, turn around, sit, and move approximately two feet to either side. Couldn't jump or walk. He wasn't taken out because the owner was afraid. So he sat trapped in this cage. It was found that he had repeatedly been hit on his head. He has major head trauma caused by past abuse. Not sure who did this BUT Cozi's previous owner was a female, and now when any females are by Cozi he gets aggressive. He bit the fingertip off a worker at the sanctuary. SHE explained the attack and WHY she felt it happened. This "person" blamed the chimp. That the ape had a perfectly reasonable life, and it's attack shows they are vile disgusting creatures that are thankless? His logic was since chimps are aggressive and the alpha male hits the chimps that any "owner" needs to beat this animal to prove he/she is the alpha? And living in a box getting his head pounded is what you should do, and the chimp was thankless? It truly was the most insane comment I've ever seen. Justifying beating this chimpanzees head because in the wild he'd get beaten too? What this goof failed to realize is the Alpha male gets challenged a LOT! AND the top chimps in the group are always the more aggressive of the group. I'm not nearly an expert on primates at all, however I choose to research these animals myself. Learn their behaviors, their abilities, strengths, and weaknesses (not many), and why? Why they act like they do? That question will never be definitively answered, they are too unpredictable!

To: James Drake - I was thinking of an example that referenced an 'alpha' in captivity but according to authoritative sources, such as Dr. Frans de Waal, when past their 'term', it is not uncommon for 'wild'. 'alpha' males to just incrementally drop down the pecking order. Many stiil have an association or influence with the new leader. The idea that every 'challenge' is a fight to the death is too simplistic. Like our own society there are complex social dynamics involved. Ha, ha! They are more like ourselves, than many of our own would like to admit.
