Another great video, guys! The Calypso cucumbers I grew this year produce some amazing cucumbers for me. We found Hoss originally while looking for the best seeder, and boy did we find it! We have the stand-alone/rolling coulter model and have little problem going into firm soil given the weight. In fluffy soil it works well thanks to the packing action of the steel wheels. It's also excellent with a few clods and/or trash left from last year, like bits of corn stubble, which the wheels push out of the way. Last year we used it for almost everything and just ordered pelleted seeds to enjoy it again. One tip- on the first pass we sometimes keep the chain and kickstand held up out of the way (little bit of old wire) so we can see the placement in the furrow to make sure the disc is working just right- then cover with the wheel hoe. Seldom need to make adjustments, but it helps with the confidence. Thanks for the show!

Hey guys, we grow in a poly greenhouse in Northern Arizona. We leave the poly on the hoops year round but cover with shade cloth once we have enough sun hours per day. We raise brassicas, lettuce, onions, beets and radishes in the winter months. We have a single poly layer, so we’re not as insulative as we’d like for our very cold nights (well below freezing), but a propane heater keeps temps in the upper 20s. The shade cloth can make a 10 degree or more difference in temps - pretty critical for us.
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 4 жыл бұрын
The shade cloth sounds like a promising idea for us. It would be nice to get the cool crops in the ground a little sooner in the fall.
@BrainStormAcres
@BrainStormAcres 4 жыл бұрын
Hoss Tools we also use row covers outside, but our twist is to roll it up on the sides to provide shade once frost is past. One other advantage is that it also provides a little protection against smaller hail. Big stuff just blows through even heavier agribon.

Always learn something from your shows. When you mentioned using the mustard as a cut and come again green, I remembered a friend giving me Hanover seed mix some 20 years ago. I believe it had a mustard in it. Do you know what greens are in a Hanover seed mix? My friend grew up in the Appalachias, I believe it was in W. Virginia, during depression era. It was a staple crop back then for Winter and early Spring greens. I mentioned your garden tools to a local store, and hope they might consider carrying some of them here. American ingenuity and manufacture is so important.

I grow onions for stand sales and home use. Best seller and personal favorite is yellow granex although I’m looking forward to the Savannah Sweet and Sweet Harvest I got from you. I’ve gotten a lot of requests for yellow Cipollini onions but I haven’t found a short day variety. I did set out a test bed of flat Italian purple from Hoss seed as well and they are doing great (so far). I got near 100% germination with that seed. Really prolific grower. I really like the seeder. Anything that saves my back is high on the list.
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 4 жыл бұрын
Yellow Granex is actually a general name that refers to the color (yellow) and shape (flattened) of the onion. There are over 20 yellow granex varieties, two of which include Savannah Sweet and Sweet Harvest. Some of the plant (and seed) companies just use the general term "yellow granex" because it gives them flexibility for changing varieties from year to year. It would be like us just selling "sweet corn" in a packet, and it could be any variety of sweet corn.

Another good show guys. Thanks for answering the question I posted about potato row length. Two questions: 1) Can you tape over the holes in a seeder to get different spacings? 2) I have been holding off on submitting my order in order to get the free shipping. I don't suppose you have any way of inclination to track the total amount spent across purchases for the free shipping do you? My current order I haven't submitted is around $300.
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 4 жыл бұрын
1) To get a custom spacing, you can put tape on the bottom of existing holes. Or we have blank plates where you can drill the hole spacing desired. 2) Our shipping charges are pretty negligible -- $4.99, $7.99 or FREE if the order is over $99.

Watch time is weighted heavily in the KZfaq algorithm. So the more watch time we have, the more likely our videos will be suggested (in the side bar) to other KZfaq viewers who many not be familiar with us. The KZfaq algorithm favors channels who keep people on KZfaq for the longest amount of time. And if our end goal is to spread the gardening love to as many people as we can, which it is, then maximizing our watch time is a great way to ensure we reach as many people as we can.

As far as spacing goes why don't you fellas put a few gear changes in the seeded. Will give you lots of variables. Jang uses those.

We wanted to make it simple so that the only thing you had to do to change seed spacing was change the # of holes in the plate. If someone needs to plant something farther apart than 19", they should probably be transplanting that crop anyways.

Wondering if this seeder would work as a single row walk behind no till drill? I have a very sandy deerplot that keeps getting hammered by wild hogs when I try broadcast seeding. Really wanting to keep my tillage down but if my seeds aren’t covered a little bit I’m guessing they sour a little after a rain and get vacuumed up.

Hard to get enough weight on a walk-behind seeder to penetrate unbroken soil.
