A coworker told me a wild story about his 8-year-old son’s rec basketball league. Back in January, his kid was so excited to finally play basketball with his friends again after 2 years of COVID cancellation. The kid was proudly wearing his jersey and new basketball shoes everywhere for a week beforehand, so excited to tell everyone he encountered he was about to finally play basketball again! But then his first game, the other team’s coach got verbally abusive with the teenage ref within 5 minutes of the game starting, and the ref (rightfully!) walked away and called off the game. What kind of absolute garbage human do you have to be to verbally abuse a teenager who’s making $10 an hour? And to ruin the day of all those kids who just wanted to play basketball? The mind boggles.

As a Japanese I didn’t know that coffee shop existed, but the “silence pressure” thing is a big issue as early as in elementary school. It’s so pervaded in the society that many Japanese people don’t even realize it’s there, but once you notice it it’s heavily toxic.

I didn't realize this as a kid but the crazy sports parents were just showing us in no uncertain terms how they treated their children at home.

I almost took the Trevor-to-Roy transition as an opportunity to keep things moving. I actually do need to... but this comfy chair compelled me to sit and watch the rest, and I'm glad I did. Loved the ending.

Yup parents can be over the top at youth sports. At one Y I worked at we created yellow and red cards for parents. The yellow card said “We appreciate your support of your child and our program and your behavior is not appropriate right now. So we will stop the game until you change your behavior.” We only had to hand out one. Worked great. The red card would have made the parent leave the playing area before we would restart the play. Never had to hand out one of those.

Roy's ending on this segment was the best thing I've ever seen on this show. Believe me, I'm in a chair too.

I live in Japan and sport parents blowing up at events is unseen. Caveat, my kid is in track and field, haven’t heard of any outbursts in baseball, soccer, or rugby. The cafe thing, first I’ve heard of it but not surprised. I can imagine there is a market goal driven individuals, especially those writing dissertations. 😂

The daily show always eases my anxiety about potentially catastrophic events..

As a writer who struggles to ride as often as I should, that café actually sounds amazing and I would totally do that. I also wish they would do that was studying too.

I am a referee and on more that one occasion, we have had police escorted the crew to our cars due to threats from the stands at HS games. I have seen "adults" scream profanities at teenage officials in an under10 game and much much more. Right now for my area for every 5 new officials we have, only 1 or 2 stay for the next season.

I never got on Twitter, I don't want to know what people are doing or thinking and if people really do want to know what you are thinking or doing, then they should be in your presence or find themselves something else to do with their time. But that's just my opinion on the subject.

A shortage in refs is not new. In AZ, they let kids ref starting very young. My son started at about 13. At, 14 I believe, while refereeing a 6 year old rec soccer game, a very large father screamed, cussed, and racially insulted him and then got in his car and followed us out of the parking lot. I had to call the police and have them deal with him....all over a 6 year old recreational soccer game. I reported it to both coaches, they both said it wasn't their problem. This was a parent from the Salsa FC league. Imagine if I had gone to run errands or something and my son was there alone.

You want to increase productivity? Remove all chairs.
