This phenomenon is referred to as sensory adaptation. This is the same effect as getting in a hot tub, and after a bit, it doesn't feel so hot anymore, just with taste buds.

I’m enjoying your videos. I’m a Family MD and have helped a number of diabetics reverse their type 2 diabetes. You’re on the right track. You really should get off the diet sodas though. Although the sugar is gone, the artificial sweeteners are neurotoxins (toxic to nerve cells) and very bad for you. I would appeal to your argument of your taste buds accommodating new tastes and learn to enjoy water! Keep up the great work of educating us newbies about pipe smoking!! Scott

Excellent video and wise words! I had a Kentucky dark fired blend in a cob and i didn't care for it until I tried with a filter and now its phenomenal. It seems using a filter or not can also depend on the blend type. Aromatics, I can go without, but for the stronger blends, its much easier to appreciate the subtleties. You videos have excellent information, well organized and excellent presentation. Many thanks!

I've definitely changed my mind about paper filters. I have 6mm and 9mm pipes. Savinelli's balsa filters are never too loose to fit in any of them. If it's a snug fit, I can twist them in, and just wipe off any shaved balsa. Thanks for an informative pipe channel.

Great to see you again MuttnChop. I just started smoking pipes again and have really enjoyed your KZfaq channel. Your videos are very informative and easy to watch. I have a broadcasting background and you, my friend, have a great gift of talking to us like we’re in the room with you. Don’t be hard on yourself and don’t change your style. You’ve got a wonderful thing going and when you don’t post - we all notice. I think the majority of your viewers watch because we connect with you on so many levels (especially those of us over 50 who have moms in their 80s). You offer a nice variety of topics and I really enjoy a dulcimer tune now and then. To other readers, raise your hand if you love the way Chris opens his Blend Club videos. ✋🏻 “This...is Blend Club.” There are others on KZfaq doing pipe smoking videos, but nothing compares to the down-home, friendly, unpretentious style of MuttnChop. Happy Piping to you, sir!

Chris, Welcome Back!!!!!!!! I am also plagued with saliva and I usually run a pipe cleaner through my pipe at least once while smoking and quite often twice. I use filters when I'm outdoors fishing or walking when a pipe cleaner isn't handy. That's one reason why I use corncobs while outdoors or traveling because one has the option of using filters or not as needed. (AND, Missouri Meerschaum is now selling balsa filters on their website as well as Medico paper filters, so I'm ordering some.) I had a 9mm filter in only one pipe and I quit using it - but that was more because it was a Mr. Brog pear pipe from Poland and it smoked hot anyway. So I'm one who uses a filter as needed. I doubt whether the filters cut out carcinogens as much as claimed, but I can't prove it. And my experience is that filters do cool the smoke a bit, because I experience less tongue bite when I use one. That comes in handy when I use a Virginia/Perique blend that smokes a little hot. And I'm an old fart (retiring in 6 months) and most of the 70 plus pipes that I own and bought years ago in the 70's and 80's didn't allow for filters. Your story about Mountain Dew rang bells with me also. I'm a Type 2 diabetic. But I'm off soft drinks completely. BUT it was actually NOT because of health benefits. I had been using diet drinks for years, especially Shasta Cola (out west in Omaha). I probably went through a 2 liter bottle every few days for years. When our old refrigerator went out about 15 years ago, my wife insisted on getting a new double door fridge with Ice and water on the outside. And lazy old me started using the exterior ice water because it was easier, faster, and I didn't have to remember to put soda in the fridge. Not using soda of any type seems to have lowered my blood sugar, but YMMV. And you're doing better than me anyway (congratulations!) because I'm still on medication.

Hi, Chris. As always, thanks so much for the knowledge. You're a big reason why I have enjoyed my first year of piping. I'm with you on the filters. It took me a bit to realize the benefits. Being a fellow wet smoker, it has helped a whole lot. If anything, it's lessened the distraction of a wet smoke and put me more in touch with the taste of the blend. Great video. -Scott

Great video! Long awaited! I am also a Type 2 diabetic. I control it with Metformin (don't shoot insulin anymore) and a low-carb diet. You are right on the nose with the diet soda thing. I cannot stomach the taste of regular soda now. My biggie is Diet A&W Root Beer. I am also discovering that I have some pipes that seem to need a filter, even though I usually dislike them. My big Molina churchwarden becomes a bowl of juice if I don't put a filter in it. So it goes to show that you can't make resolutions like "I'll never use a filter" because it doesn't work in every scenario. Pipers need to be willing to innovate sometimes in order to get the best smoke. I'm still learning! 🐱‍👓

I always use a filter with my briar to keep the smoke cool and dry, and to bring the tongue-bite from my godawful corncob to a more tolerable level. I don’t use filters with my two Meerschaums because they already give me that perfectly cool and dry smoke, and they have yet to give me any tongue-bite even after spending most of today smoking them. Thank you for your videos. They have helped me to better enjoy pipe-smoking after I made the switch from cigars in January.

Hi Chris, good to see another video outside the blend club! My thought s on filters is if it’s available to use then use it, anything that stops some of the unnecessary rubbish getting into the mouth area then it makes sense to take advantage of it, they do absolutely nothing to diminish the flavours, IMO, I’ve just bought 2 Carey pipes with the “Magic Inch” filter system and I have to say the best 2 smoking pipes I have along with my meerschaum pipe, take care my friend 👍💨💨💨 Terry

Good to see you Chris. I used to drink mountain dew by the case I quit daily soda drinking because in my case it led to half a dozen kidney stones and that truly sucked. As far as filters are concerned I like using them half my pipes take them, half don't. I find that they make the smoke smother and keep tobacco bits out of my mouth. The only difference flavor wise is at the top of the bowl, once it's going good it is about the same taste for me. In my non filters pipes I find I have to slow down my breath quite a bit to keep the smoke cool. Hope you have a good week, and a cool pipe.

Hi Chris, I personally don’t use a filter just because to me it’s a hassle to always change it. But you are right about your taste buds adjusting. I had to cut out salt from my diet, and now anything with a lot of salt drys out my mouth. You should try to smoke a blend with a filter and without to see if you can tell the difference. J Colon A good single malt Whisky with a touch of water is the way it's nosed, teaspoon full at most (mixer with single malt is tantamount to heresy). Your opening it up and not burning your mouth to bits with the fact that in some cases it's over 100 proof on a cask strength bottle. It's the way I see pipe filters. If you take out the bite element, which for me is always caused by being a wet smoker, you enjoy the flavours more. A pleasant smoke is always going to be superior to a rough one.

Hi Muttnchop! Dennis from Sweden here. I did kind of that last year. I’ve been drinking Coca Cola for as long as i remember. More and more during a specific period. I did cut down on it when i met my better half and last year i said: Well screw this. Im going to try cutting down. So i did. I actually stopped totaly. Didnt touch the stuff for 3 months. Then out of curiosity i just one day wanted to try one. And i tell you this , it was horrible. Just as you said it tasted like i were drinking pure suryp. Yuck! Oh and to the note, i prefer filter in my pipes. Im also a wet smoker and i even think that the tounge-bite gets leds with the filter. Thanks for your vids! I watch them over and over. Muttnchop (Chris ) Thanks for this video. I too am a type 2 and drink diet drinks and like you have said they didn't taste too great at first but now they don't bother me. However, I don't use filtered pipes. I have a 9mm filtered pipe but I don't use it very often. What I have found is that if you smoke an aromatic tobacco the filter pretty much removes all the aromatic flavouring. So I stopped using filters. The one tobacco where I do use a filtered pipe is with Condor Long Cut Flake. The filter rounds out taste and makes Condor a much smoother smoke. Happy Piping.......

Hi Muttnchop (Chris ) One other thing..... I must be a little bit of a wet smoker too because I have found that the tobacco in the bottom of the bowl was always too wet to smoke and a fair bit of tobacco went to waste. But...........I have found a solution to this problem. I have been using "Dri-Kule" wire gauze filters which are conical shaped filters that fit into the bottom of the bowl and thus keeps the tobacco dry and you are able to smoke to the bottom of the tobacco. There is also another plus for using these filters. Because the tobacco is off the bottom of the bowl. The hot smoke is being drawn down as you smoke into this space and it has room to expand and thereby cool down. Much the same as a Peterson system pipe. I hope this info is of use to you. Give them a try because they are cheap as chips and cure the problem of unusable, wet tobacco. If you have a problem getting them please let me know and I will send you some in the mail. They might take a little while to cross the Atlantic but never mind. Give them a try. Happy smokes

I don't really like the paper filters so I haven't used them in a few years but I will be using the Savinelli filters from now on and using fewer pipe cleaners.I'll still be enjoying my old filter less Custom-bilts once and a while however.(I still like to go old-school every now and then! lol) Good call and thanks once again for sharing your knowledge and experience. I usually smoke pipes with 6mm filters. I am in the process of sampling many blends to find my favorites. I started with Super Value Vanilla a few months ago (I have tried many brands since then). It was ok, then as I explored I was curious about their peach blend. I could only get it online in the 12 oz pouch. My first pipe of it basically just tasted like hot air with a hint of the peach flavor. Next time I will try drying it out more. If it continues that way I am thinking of maybe mixing in straight Virginia's and maybe a bit of straight Burley to get some tobacco taste and to use it up. I don't want to toss it, I don't like to waste. Would this be a good way to go and can you or someone suggest good tobaccos to mix in? Thanks.

I'm a huge fan of the "Savinelli Balsa System" 6mm filters. When I found out they fit in the filtered stems of MM cobs, I really fell in love with 'em. They sop-up lots of moisture. I dry my blends out a bit before smoking too, and with those I don't get gurgles or any pipe juice in my mouth. For me, they don't change the flavor at all. Since I love my unfiltered pipes as much as my filtered Savinellis and MM cobs, I smoke both, and I don't notice any differences in flavor with most all my blends. I smoke mostly strong and/or unflavored blends-ones that you'd likely notice the difference in if the balsa filters were robbing the flavor. For one example; I can't discern any difference from Escudo with or without a balsa filter. Additionally, they collect a significant amount of tar, which carries a lot of the carcinogens in smoke. However, as for nicotine content goes, there is no affect on it whatsoever. On Soda: The high fructose corn syrup caused that overpowering, syrup-y flavor you got after swapping regular for diet. Some folks like sodas with "real" cane sugar, like Throwback Mountain Dew, because they hate the taste of HFCS. Anyway, as always I send my best regards to ya from Cape Cod, MA!

I use filter pipes for the same reason, helps keep it dry. My first pipe was a German made Vauen with 9mm filter, so Vauen charcoal filter and Savenelli balsa wood filter pipes tend to be my favorite to use. But I am a very infrequent pipe smoker, so that may be a factor as to why using filters is not a big deal for me.

In my opinion, filters have their good and bad sides. When used on Danish tobaccos they surely are needed in order to provide a tampon to the taste, but since I'm smoking non aromatics I think I can get away without it. Also thank you for your many entertaining minutes, since there was no one helping me get started, I consider yourself a teacher that opened my way to a whole new world.

Well, for me, I have found that filters have certain positive advantages like a drier, cooler smoke, less moisture, etc. There are also some negative aspects for me, such as reduced air flow (I like a lot of draw) and, yes, some reduction in taste. The filter doesn't change the flavor, it just seems to deaden it a little. The effect is not extreme at all, but to me it is noticeable. Cheers!

Muttnchop Piper Yes, they are in Amazon but it’s a bit pricey. My guess would be to compensate for the price of shipping. You could also try ordering it at a Walmart or Target, as it appears that they’re still carrying the 12 count packs. Just search a local store for “Mountain Dew throwback” and they should have some.

Greetings Muttonchop! I dig your style and demeanor. I'm no scientist either, but how I was raised we never had any sugar or salt, for example. Consequently, my whole life it's been physically revolting for me to have even the slightest sugar or salt. People don't understand why I won't eat birthday cake, and so forth. Sugar not only to my knowledge has no health benefit or nutritional value, but, as a crop, from what I've read and I'm no historian either, it originated the modern slave trade. Anyway... Happy piping!

Hello Muttonchop! and thank you for the information about using pipe filters. My question is this... can all pipes take a filter or only those pipes that have a set up to put a filter into? Or can you convert a pipe to take a filter? Thank you and I look forward to your response.
@MuttnchopPiper
@MuttnchopPiper 6 жыл бұрын
Darrellyn Barrett - No, your pipe has to be set up to accept a filter, but a pipe that is set up to take a filter, can be converted to non filter by the use of an insert that comes with the pipe. That’s why I primarily purchase pipes with the capability of taking a filter, you can use one or not but you have the option. 👍👍👍

My pipe count is now up to eight, and I now have more unfiltered pipes than I have filtered ones. My most recent acquisition is a very large, beautifully colored vintage meerschaum pipe with that I won for $19 at an auction last week, and seems to smoke sweeter than my briars, with the exception of the bent billiard H.I.S. that I mentioned in another comment. The only difference between smoking that one and smoking any of my meerschaums is the slightly warmer smoking temperature. My filtered briar smokes like a furnace, and it appears to have developed a crack on the outside of the bowl as a result, so I will be replacing it with a Dr. Grabow Savoy at my first opportunity.

Would be great if you could answer this question. Thanks.

i believe the taste tobacco has more to do how a person draws their pipe. yes the filter does tend to "limit" the taste, but after a few draws it comes out nicely. A lot of people i know who swear off filters smoke like a train engine, and smoke hot. as a diabetic myself, im able to pick up things my peers cant. so its kinda nice to be able to do that. makes enjoying things in life more sweet, literally :D also if you drink diet soda try holding your breath, you will cut out almost all the sweetness of the drink. and if you hold your breath while drinking a normal soda it taste normal, horribly sweet, but yeah

For me, a filter suppresses the steamy quality of all tobaccos, aromatics in particular, and eliminates tongue bite. It delivers a much dryer smoke, and I really enjoy pipe smoking much better when using them. I prefer Savinelli balsa filters, which come cheaply in 100-packs, but in a pinch I'll just snap off a piece of pipe cleaner, bend it, and wedge it into the shaft. Works perfectly.

Peter Jaimez - I have done that, the taste of the tobacco is enhanced like the regular Mountain Dew, but then I start noticing a gurgle and have to use my first pipe cleaner. Filters for me are a more efficient way to smoke, insert the filter, fill the bowl, light and go. 👍👍👍

In my opinion, EU tobacco is made to be smoked with 9mm filter, thats why all their pipes are filtered. Take for example Peterson and Dunhill tobacco, they taste so much better with filters, you get the real smooth flavor out of them, unlike the US made tobacco, they are made to be smoked without filters to get the real taste, if you smoked them with filtered 9mm pipe, then the flavor will almost disappear and become light.

I don't claim to hold the truth. Truth is relative. I smoke both, filter and no filter and here's my take on it. If I use a filter and want more flavor, I draw slower. The filter changes the airflow. I think that the change in air flow is what affects the flavor. Experiment.
