Will there ever be a cure for type 1 diabetes? Research from Vertex Pharmaceuticals is furthest along in the development of a cure for T1D. In fact, six participants in their first clinical trial are "insulin-independent" - but the next clinical trial holds much more promise for the majority of people with T1D. Learn everything you need to know about VX-880 and VX-264 in this video!
UPDATE: In late 2023, two recipients in the VX-880 clinical trial died. Their deaths were determined unrelated to VX-880. Read more here: news.vrtx.com/news-releases/n...

44 years and counting started as a 14 year old balancing insulin and food and now as a 58 year old balance insulin and food. Throw activity in to the mix so its not straight forward and what's changed. My mum told me as a 14 year old stay healthy and they will find a cure !🙃🤔

Hi DSBaker! Congratulations on 44 years and counting! It's not an easy game, this T1D. You sound like your resilience has supported you along the way. I have a 100-page guide to exercising with T1D that teaches new things even to those with decades under the belt! You might find it helpful. Nonetheless, don't give up! I hope we see a cure of some kind in our lifetimes! Thank you for watching!

As someone who was diagnosed with T1D 47, soon to be 48, years ago, I never believed the line about a cure being "around the corner" or "just over the horizon". I've been very happy with the advances in technology over the last half century that make management of T1D easier and more effective. Will there be a "cure" such as you describe? Maybe, but probably not in my life time (I'm 66). Hopefully, though, it will be available for my daughter who is also has T1D for the last 10 years. Thank you for your informative videos and Instagram posts. Blessings!

Yup. Research has come a long way in the last 20 years. There are so many companies developing insulin-producing stem cells or therapies and ways to hide those cells from the immune system. It's still well down the road but I do believe future generations won't be taking insulin injections every day.

Love this explanation! Could you do a look into the Fraustman lab research? It seems to be the closest I've seen to some sort of true cure, but the research is going very slowly (with good reason). I understand most of it but sometimes get a little lost/unsure if it would really work!

I have T1.5/LADA and was diagnosed 4 years ago at 28 years old. About a year prior, my cat was diagnosed with diabetes, but went into complete remission around 6 months later. At the time of my diagnosis I was hoping it was possible for that to happen to me as well. My doctor told me we were really close to a cure, but knowing I have to live the rest of my life with this becomes harder every day. It seems unfair, seeing how so many others have lived with this their whole lives, but I've been relatively small/thin my entire life, and I miss being able to eat whatever I want. I hate having to be woken up in the middle of the night because of hypos. I rotate, but I have no body fat, so I end up with stupid, gross needle marks all around my stomach where two little "pooches" have formed from injections. I could keep going. This disease is so fucking stupid and I hate it. Every few months I Google to see if there have been any hope of a functional cure coming to market.

I'm really enjoying your videos! Your energy and clarity make them engaging and informative. I'm excited to see your channel evolve. I'd like to add some things I’ve taken note of while following Vertex’s ongoing progress in the work they are doing in T1D. 1. 🔬 VX-264 TRIALS: 🔹 VX-264 began dosing patients before August 3, 2023. 🔹 VX-880's first patient, Brian Shelton, was dosed in 2021 and positive 90-day data was announced 110 days later, followed by the NYTimes article in November. 🔹 In comparison, Vertex has been slower and quieter about the VX-264 trial. Hopefully we’ll be hearing some news in the next few months.
@BradyT1D

2. 🏭 Manufacturing Commitment 🔹 On August 30th, 2023 Vertex and Lonza broke ground on a large manufacturing facility in New Hampshire, expected to be operational by 2025. This step demonstrates Vertex's readiness to deliver therapies promptly if trials are successful. 3. 💬 Perspectives on Immunosuppression 🔹 Immunosuppression, an unavoidable component of VX-880, often raises concerns due to its risks, as you point out, but… 🔹 Aaron J. Kowalski, Ph.D. is the JDRF CEO, a scientist, and someone living with T1D. I feel his perspective is uniquely well-informed given his position. 🔹Last September he was on a TCOYD panel and recounted this: "The big next question is, would you do it (VX-880)? So the folks at Vertex flat out asked me when I was in Boston. They said, 'Would you do this?' I said, 'I don't know. I got to think about that.' And I went home and I said to my wife, 'I was just blown away by what they were doing. I mean, absolutely blown away.' And I said to my wife, 'I think I would do it.' She goes, 'No, no, you don't want immunosuppressants.' And I'm like, 'I kind of don't want diabetes’” 🔹 Hearing that opened my mind to a different perspective and reminded me to not forget that while immunosuppression carries risks, so does T1D! 🔹 Dr. Kowalski also added “One of the big things for us at JRF now is actually advocating for broader access to these clinical trials. And ultimately, I firmly believe that any adult with type 1 diabetes in the United States, they and their doctors should have the decision to make that decision. Do I want to take immunosuppressants or not? Not the FDA, because right now they're limiting it."

🧬 Viacyte's VCTX-211 Trial 🔹 In collaboration with CRISPR Therapeutics, this trial focuses on genetically modified cells to avoid immune attacks, with completion anticipated in 2025. 🔹 Vertex's acquisition of Viacyte in 2022 and a March 2023 agreement with CRISPR Therapeutics are a heartening indication of Vertex’s commitment to this cause. The knowledge sharing that their investments in these companies is likely creating is unlike anything I’ve seen in the past. 🌟 Your video inspired these reflections, Ginger. I hope this additional information fuels further optimism for a future free from type 1 diabetes. Keep up the good work!

I would say there’s a lot of companies making diabetes equipment who are rich because there hasn’t been a cure yet. I believe they will try and delay a cure for as long as they can. I’ve had type 1 for 40 years now. Just my 2 cents!
@DiabetesNerd

Yes, you're not alone in this theory. Many people believe a cure will be blocked. But the people developing cures ALSO have a LOT of money. Vertex is a HUGE company. Bigger than Dexcom. Meanwhile, insulin companies have far more type 2s to sell insulin too, and they're making 100X more from GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, so their need to sell insulin to type 1s really isn't what keeps their lights on. The conspiracies about a cure being blocked just don't make sense when you learn more about these finer details of how those companies are really making their billions. I appreciate the skepticism nonetheless! Congrats on 40 years!

I got a question , if most of diabetic type 1 got some beta cells in them maybe arround 10% still funtionning , and knowledge is capable of transforming stem cells to any cells in the body how come that they cant take our stem cells and differentiate them to become like the 10 % that is left inside the pancreas located in big numbers in its tail (pancreaatic tail) this way we will not need immunosupressant or any other medication ???

Your immune system knows the difference between your body's only insulin-producing cells and foreigner cells from outside your body. They can't make the transplanted cells represent your own DNA. Instead, they can give you those cells but then protect the cells from your immune system. That's what these functional cures focus one. @@DiabetesNerd I think that inflammation is a root cause of T1D. According to Dr. Robert Lustig our western diet is full of inflammatory factors like omega-6 oils, fructose, and wheat proteins in the processed food. Even in the food for kids, that's terrible 😔 (I've only counted the sugars in the diary). I'm lucky to live in Europe. I reversed early stage of T2D by quiting any processed food, adding good fats and the fiber. Yes, it cost a lot of time cooking for myself from whole foods. But I can control what I eat. I hope that people with T1D will find a successfully treatment for this terrible disease.

When six-month-old babies develop type 1 diabetes, it disproves these "what you eat" theories. Studies have looked at gut bacteria in people with type 1, and there is a difference in the bacteria compared to non-diabetics, but they theorize that it's a post-diagnosis change. Type 1 diabetes is complicated.
