Will Watermelon Break Me & My Blood Sugar? (Watermelon and Blood Sugar)

Are you usually scared of watermelon? Watermelon has a glycemic index of 72. That makes watermelon a high glycemic food. So, how far will consuming watermelon wreck my blood sugar? That's what I set out to do in this N=1 experiment.
Watermelon is a nourishing food. Watermelon has lycopene which is a powerful antioxidant, minerals like magnesium, potassium, manganese and even a little calcium but watermelon is also a hydrating food. Should we avoid eating watermelon because it has natural sugar in it? Let's see what my experiment of eating half a watermelon does to my blood sugar. Does watermelon raise blood sugar ? If so, by how much.

Thank you Dr Joe for the informative video. Most of all thank you for the explanation regarding glycaemic index and glycaemic load and for the explanation you gave to someone else in the comments below regarding how the sugar spikes in the first hour and how it's supposed to get lower after 2hrs. This information is very useful because it's lacking, no body ever explained that to me. It would be interesting to have a video from you in the future with more information on glycaemic index and load and how to interpret the nutritional information labels in food, in the sense of what the numbers listed as carbohydrates and of which sugars really mean, because even these are confusing since most of the foods which should be ok to eat still have a high dose of sugars in them. Thank you.

@drjoetvMD
@drjoetvMD 7 күн бұрын
Your doctor is asking you to test at 2 hours because your blood sugar is expected to be back down at that point. Your blood sugar should peak at 1 hour. If your blood sugar remains high at 2 hours, then you are NOT dealing with that food very well. Basically you are still diabetic (glucose intolerant)

And that's another point. People freaking out about blood sugar rising as if it is heresy. Your blood sugar is supposed to rise after eating a carb-rich meal. The rise is not the problem. But what must happen is by the 2nd hour, your blood sugar should be heading back down. That's how we (human beings) were designed

@drjoetvMD
@drjoetvMD 4 күн бұрын
So long as a food has soluble fiber it will perform that job. Unless one has a camera inside the intestines to observe the journey of a food through the gut it is difficult to tell what the consistency of the food becomes after eating it but I would imagine that foods with soluble fiber will get viscous following digestion so long as you drink enough water to facilitate that process

I saw this experiment using a much larger watermelon in the United States and a two hour period. There was a very slight rise until the one hour 45 minute mark and then a sharp spike up to 42 and then right back down to 0. The spike lasted about ten minutes. Nothing else was consumed. Note: The watermelon in the United Kingdom is much different than a watermelon I would buy in the United States, unless I drive up and get an Amish grown watermelon. !

She insists that the salads, followed by the fats and proteins, limits the blood glucose spike. Anyway, an interesting experiment here Dr. Joe. I love watermelon!

Yes, that works but those tricks are measures employed by people who are reluctant or lack the will to reverse their insulin resistance. I don't know if you know this. I used to have prediabetes right on the verge of developing full blown diabetes. Now look how I respond to carbs after doing the very things I teach people on this channel. I am not avoiding carbs to have nice blood sugars but confronting the carbs head-on. Folks need to reverse their insulin resistance so they can eat any whole food carbs they want instead of running scared of carbs

@@drjoetvMD This is impressive for sure. Would your method, which I watched, work for Anglo-Saxon type folks over 60? I have heard genetics and age are major factors as well. I’d like to give it a try, but I am afraid of gout, weight gain and asthma returning if I head back to carbs. Thanks for your thoughtful replies. Most inspiring!

@@krisjustin3884 Funny how you are worried about gout happening with plants. Gout is caused by high purine foods and are mainly animal products like organ meats, veal, bacon, turkey, venison and organ meats like liver and medium purine foods like ham, pork, beef, chicken, duck etc. Fish is allowed although some fish may be gouty too. Gout is not really a plant issue. Anyone, at any age can reverse their insulin resistance regardless of genetics or age. The only way the method fails is if the individual does not go all in or continues to maintain fat consumption above 30 gm daily. The idea behind our plant approach is you need to get rid of the fat from your liver and muscle cells. That's it. Do that and your carb tolerance goes up gradually and you'll start enjoying fruits again for instance. Who wants to live a life where you don't touch carbs again for the rest of your life? Certainly not me

@@drjoetvMD You make sense even though I’m untrained and ignorant of medical matters. Your approach is exactly opposite the keto camp. Don’t exceed 30gm of fat while they say don’t exceed 30gm of carbs! As for gout, I was on crutches for a long time until I stopped carbs and pretty much only ate meat! I was able to walk and even run again. It only returns if I eat too many carbs! Seems like either approach will address gout, while the combination of carbs and fat seems to bring back symptoms in either camp. The methodology you used to conquer diabetes sounds groundbreaking! Those in the other camp also cannot say you’re supporting big pharma as you don’t take meds for insulin resistance and this would leave many stunned as I am. I have to consider this very seriously!

No. We didn't expect your blood sugar to go crazy high. Your insulin response was in play to keep your "blood sugar" levels within a normal range of 70 ~ 99 mg/dl. What was this demostration suppose to show and or indicate? Eating watermelon will not "wreck [your] blood sugar." ...remember, your pancreas and insulin will do it's job.

Good point. And that's what I am trying to demonstrate. Folks are so scared of fruits like watermelon and the idea was to do an experiment that borders on the extreme. Eat half a watermelon which most won't eat in one sitting and show folks that the magnitude of the rise in blood sugar isn't that scary. So eating smaller portions is not such a bad idea after all

At 2 hours my blood sugar will be lower. Your blood sugar peaks 1 hour after eating. Your doctor is suggesting 2 hours for you because he expects your blood sugar to be back right down at that point. If it remains high you are still intolerant of carbs (diabetes)

Dr. Joe: When I was diagnosed as “edging” towards being pre-diabetic in January 2023, by my new PCP after being informed by my “previous” PCP of a blood test I had in October of 2022 (before the holidays) I told my new PCP, “Before you prescribe any medication for this condition let me see what I can do for myself on my own!” 😜👍 When I came back for my followup my blood sugar was 2.X and he told me that I was no longer edging towards being pre diabetic and I could eat wha I wanted: when I’d seen my new PCP with my alarming prognosis I immediately cut out sugar, started drinking black coffee, stopped eating white breads, seriously reducing my sugar intake. Much to my surprise I’ve lost 17 pounds since June 2023 up until now! 😂 I was told to cut out of specific foods in my diet that were high in sugar of which bananas and grapes were the first two identified along with watermelon, drinking unsweetened lemon water, etc. When I had another followup four weeks later I was told my blood sugar had risen maintaining the same behavior which didn’t;t make sense to me and that I should get a glucose monitor: that was it and nothing else! 😳 I’d seen an advertisement about a sensor wearing monitor that didn’t require finger pricks which was more was more appealing to me being a bassist having my PCP write me a prescription for the local pharmacy. Unbelievably, I was denied the apparatus due to not being diabetic! What kind of insanity was this that I couldn’t prevent the disease by acquiring the necessary implements to ward off its advance which doesn’t make any logical sense at all??? 😱 Conversely, I’ve learned a great deal about the food (SAD), medical, and pharmaceutical industries in particular over the past year and we the unknowing public are in grave danger! They’re shortening our lifespans by weaponizing these industries to achieve DEPOPULATION and I’m now hearing physicians speaking out about this diabolical agenda corroborating my perspectives! 🤬 There is so much medical ambiguity being imparted to the SHEEPLE you don’t know who to believe: I just recently resumed eating watermelon due to it now being promoted as a healthy diet choice which is why I’m viewing your video. I vet everything for clarity fortunately for me and have caught doctors deliberately lying to me which I’ve come to understand is nothing new: which is why I’ve changed doctors for lack of trust! 😖 So, what’s your verdict: is watermelon a healthy food choice? I also subscribe to Insulin 1, Dr. Bobby Pierce, Dr. Boz, Dr. Greg Berg, Dr. Robert Iriq, and many others for comparison: not being medically trained nor a mathematician the task is daunting! I’ll assume the message here is pretty much like what we all should do without putting too much thought into it: moderation moderation moderation is the word of the day! 😜👍 QUESTION EVERYTHING: What Is The Truth (WITT)??? 🧐 GYHOOYA: OYE!!! 😇

I need to know your reference range for your lab. For a lot of labs, 11 will be the upper limit. If that applies to your lab, a count of 13 is not something I would freak out about. It's a marginal rise but generally speaking raised WBC suggests infection; just to keep it simple. It's your doctor's job to locate the source of the infection and treat it. If you get it treated, the count will be back down. Just so know though, there are other causes beyond infection even medications can cause a rise in white cell count
