As offices begin to open back up, economists worry the pandemic reversed years of progress made in women's labor force participation. They warn that trend will continue downwards if changes are not made soon. Top economists like Gary Shilling, Esther Duflo, Mark Zandi, Mohamed El-Erian and Dan Ariely believe this issue can be temporary and offer solutions such as changes in social norms, investments in infrastructure and childcare. Society has moved toward dual income. The result is lower salaries, lower marriage rates, lower birth rates and less parental supervision. In addition there is higher stress, single parenthood and divorce. Has dual income truly been a benefit?

The pandemic has forced people to reevaluate their lives and we're realizing there is more to life than ones profession. If people choose to stay home with their kids, why should we shame that? I make the lesser income in my relationship and I expect to stay home when we have kids. One thing my economics teacher in college explained is that a lot more families could have a stay at home parent if people actually dug through their budget and saw if they could change their lifestyle slightly and do it. Two major American expenses that can be the dividing line between one parent staying home is the cost of childcare and a second car. If the parent with the lesser income is less than those, staying home makes more sense. Having a parent around is good for kids and we shouldn't shame moms or dads who want to stay home with their kids for a few years or work part time or start a business with more flexibility than working in an office. Working in a cubicle isn't the pinnacle of achievement and again, the pandemic made a lot of us realize how fickle businesses are and that we are disposable. If we are going to be treated with the same concern as a paper towel, why shouldn't we shift? And if that is starting a side hustle and staying home with your kids, then good for us! Companies like Workday will have to compete for workers to come and work in the cubicles instead of workers competing for few jobs.
@Saml01
@Saml01 2 жыл бұрын
The problem is, eventually kids will grow up and not need a stay at home parent. That parent will be out of the workforce long enough to become unemployable later. So staying at home is not limited to simple economics. It has long term repercussions.
@thetrainhopper8992
@thetrainhopper8992 2 жыл бұрын
@@Saml01 you're also thinking in a very limited way. There are other things people can do besides sell their souls to an office job. Starting a business for one, maybe the stay at home parent has a knack for cooking and they start a KZfaq channel or a deli after their kids start school. Or some side hustle like being a notary for high value transaction. There are other things people can do for money than go work for someone else and exist at their convenience. A friend of mine is a stay at home dad and he still does IT work for projects from time to time. So the "work 40 hours in a spreadsheet farm or you are worthless" is not the only way to live life and it never has been the only way.

@@thetrainhopper8992 Please, don't give people false hope. 99% of people will not will be able to achieve or pursue the things you said and sadly will need to work for someone else to make any reasonable steady income and benefits. The alternative is basically to remain single income forever while convincing everyone else it's by choice and they enjoy doing PTA stuff full-time for free. It's much better for a person that has some kind of training or knowledge to grow with it and then figure out how to pivot away from it then bet on becoming the next TikTok millionaire after a 5 or 6 year hiatus.

That is fine but I feel they should own their choices and not ask for child tax credits and social security spousal benefits to help pay for their choice. I do think families, kids, and even society benefits a bit form having at least some parents home full time. I just find SAHM families are always complying about budgets, or asking for a handout because they chose to have someone drop out of the labor force. I definitely think it is a personal choice and maybe even a good choice for some families. Just don’t ask others to subsidize your choices.

I don't have children, but I'm positive I would prefer to raise them rather than having society do it. Why is it a step backward to raise your own child? There is a reason child care is so expensive. It's vastly complicated and important. Not every parent should quit working and take care of their children, but those who do should not be judged. Technology is decreasing the amount of real work there is, so pay people more for meaningful work and let others participate in society by raising their children, creating art and/or making discoveries. Money should be a tool to create the life you want, not a slave driver.

When they speak about "Society raising children" im petty confident it's referring to Schooling system, Childcare systems (such as nurseries or non-obligatory Kindergartens etc.) Unless you raise your child, school it, feed it every meal from your own pocket (as oppposed to govt. assisted programs/welfare), then society has some part in raising your kids. The point being made is in Europe, we accept that public systems such as schools, govt. provided breakfasts, public libraries, parks and museums etc, all play a part in raising children, as opposed to all of that burden falling on two parents.

Yeah, the tone of this video is ridiculous. Why does it matter if female participation decreases if it's a CHOICE. I have no problem with a woman with a career or if you're a stay at home dad, but for the last couple of decades you didn't have a choice. You both had to work to afford kids. That's ridiculous. Wages will keep going up if our labor force stays dramatically reduced (which will just make it easier and easier to have a stay at home parent). I actually think this might help strengthen the middle class.

So... explain this to me. A woman could work at 45k/year for 10 hours a day (counting the commute) and have some stranger raise her kids up until age 10. Daycare here is at least 2k/mo, right? So after daycare expenses, she's making poverty wages and doesn't get to see her kids. I don't think putting kids in daycare and having them raised by a stranger (as well as picking up bad habits from other kids) is the best solution. If white collar jobs really want women in the workforce, companies need to put the money where their mouths are and allow the primary care provider to work from home. Or maybe work from home for 3 days and go into the office 2 days for a half day on each of those days. Parents need to be in their children's lives! They shouldn't have to grow up in daycare. Wfh would also allow parents to play a much more active role in their children's education. Like if they find out that the school is trying to indoctrinate their kids with Marxist ideology, they can pull them out of school and find a better way to get them educated on math, science, reading, writing, and history.

From grocery stores, to hospitals, to remote office work, etc. Whatever the argument is about, it seemed unnecessary and biased. What about the MEN taking on more riskier and labour intensive jobs/career like Garbage collection, Sewage cleaning, construction, auto repair and mechanics, technical repairs, etc? There is a huge demand in those industry that women can participate in. It ain't glamourous but it certainly helps with the Equal pay argument. I have no idea what this is even about. If you're a woman like me who's fresh out of college, is purpose driven and with a lot of ambition, then you need to be working. Gray areas are meant to be filled. End of story. That being said, not even the pandemic slowed me down or stood in my way of getting employed. Women would love to return to work, after being out of work for over a year. However, there is SO MUCH race, age, and time lapse discrimination in the labor market. It's unbelievable. If you want workers, then more employers need to hire mature applicants of color who haven't been in the workforce consistently because they have been caring for others. The problem is, not enough employers are letting go of the mindset that a person should "retire" at 50. They're not accepting that people are living a lot longer. People do not need to retire at 50, or even 60 or 70. They can contribute years of work experience and skill to your company. They can learn to new skills! Employers must know that everyone who is applying to a job isn't going to be white and 20-something. Just get that in your head. If you need workers, then for God's sake, you've got to hire the applicants that are availabe and plentiful. Stop holding out for this "idealistic" employee you see on television advertisements (e.g., blonde hair, blue eyes, and chiclet white teeth). Those people will diminish in numbers as years go on. The REAL WORLD is DIVERSE. It consists of people of color who are living well into their 80s and 90s. HIRE THEM and stop making up excuses about them not being "qualified". What can you do to help them meet your qualifications? Can they be trained, reskilled? Stop throwing away applicants, then you employers complain later about "no one wants to work". That is a load of crap. You had better know that, soon, applicants of color is all you'll have to choose in the pool of applicants!

If American companies do not want to pay us Americans so much money, then LOWER prices. My God everything in America, especially housing, is so incredibly expensive. Most of our incomes are spent on HOUSING. Rent and mortgages are completely out of control, and no one is doing anything about it. Is this a serious question...i mean are you seriously asking if one gender will return to the workforce? WTF is wrong with you people. Folks that want to work (male OR female) will work, those that have the resources and DON'T want to work...won't work. Whether they are male or female matters little, the businesses that need people need the RIGHT people, not the "diversity" that society has decided businesses "need" because of some ridiculous crusade of trying to make the workplace "reflect" society. I mean is it more or less important that mothers of children that are at home work? Is it more or less important that fathers of children that are at home work? Stop with the woke garbage and focus on what's important and that is that companies hire the right (by right i mean most qualified to do the actual job) person for the jobs that need filling.

It has been a GOOD THING that women are staying home with their kids because of the pandemic, Thank you COVID for keeping women home. Why? Look at divorce rates, childhood obesity, young adult incarceration rates of kids that grew up with a working mom vs a stay at home mom. When both parents are working outside the house, the home falls apart.

Women feminist or not will eventually depend on a man again. They can't handle the workforce it is too competitive for them. It's hard for men as well and many aren't able to compete either. There's nothing glorious about being a corporate mule many women become strippers and waitresses when they see that they can make more money just flaunting their bodies than sitting in a cubicle for 8 hours. Many successful men in corporate jobs have never been with woman, sad but true. They've been worked for so long that they haven't had time to do anything else so now they want a young woman to spend their money on go see eharmony the reality is pretty grim for them but yes much much easier for women to find alternative ways of having a middle class life than working or sharing a mortgage with someone they probably married for stability rather than physical attraction.
