Man that is so cool. Pretty amazing you got to actually put together a game for a guy that was making games when you were a kid. That's pretty much the coolest "thank you for the great games you've made" statement you could have made to Will Wright. Sim City, I spent a good bit of my childhood playing that game on various platforms, but mainly on the PC. Will is a visionary. You may not always like his games, but you have to applaud the mans ability to innovate.

I was a Broderbund fan as a kid and knew about Bungeling Bay, but never really played it. I never imagined it was as deep as it is, but all those elements Will mentioned (ships supplying the factory and a battleship being built) sound awesome. You're pretty fearless. I'd have no idea how to ship a game across the country, and you didn't either, but you just did it and made it look pro. Good job all around. And Adam's such a great guy.

Hah great job doing this, never heard of this channel before but got pointed to it. Respect to you and for Will and his years of fine work (especially the 80s and earlier 90s stuff.) It was funny watching you not understand the mechanics of this game. I've had it since it came out back in the day on the NES. I wish it had that starter map as that was either cut out or thought up after for VS. Next time shoot those jets down.

This was so cool! Will Wright seems to be a pretty cool guy too! That little game is very clever, It goes to show how developers put a lot of thought and a lot of love into creating challenging games with the technology of that time. For us above 30 it was all new, we got to know a world without video games and with them. **dies from nostalgia**

Excellent video! A wild guess John, maybe the game had a dedicated harness that would come with the original ROM which had P3+P4 permanently shorted pressed as a part of security feature? Japanese arcade manufacturer really take security seriously. I have no knowledge on old arcade machines, but I know the new PC-based Konami arcades has several security dongles, harddisks encrypted and the game software are (kind of) hardware specific - even if you decrypted the harddisk and got the software out and got the security dongles check out of the way, it still takes a while before you can "build" a machine that can run the software.

When Will Wright talks about the advenced mechanics of the game (ie: enemy gathering resources, radars tracking your position etc) he's referring to the original C64 version he programmed, which was much more realistic and elaborated. The NES port (and the VS version) is just a dumbed down port featuring cartoonish graphics and simplified gameplay, resulting in a very easy and very different game from the original!

Even though you don't have the game cabinet to put a bezel on anymore, will you make a reenactment video of that scanning and enlargement process for both us and Will, please? So, John, is there a lot of videos where, with some viewer mails that came to you a few or several days before a given video, you waited until one or more videos down the road to read them? How do you decide which letters to read during which videos? Do you just go by first-come-first-served order and sometimes have to get through a backlog and therefore letters may get pushed out past the videos they came just before, just for that reason, or do you have a specific method for sometimes hand-picking them out of receipt order?

Whoa, so this game was produced by Nintendo, created by Will Wright, published by Broderbund, and ported by Hudson soft. I mean, there's so many signals in the brain that the network of video game production is so much more closely tied than I could have ever thought. I mean, if Big Brother is at all a reality, then clearly video games have tied into a certain team spirited mentality, yet clearly have been, since the very start, all pretty much one derivative network with similar investors and goals. Really, you might even abstract this to the conclusion that any console wars, at any time, any game developer battles, any company going under or rising to the top, has really just been a series of plays by the same investor this whole time as if to fuel a drama of mascots and teams, simply being a play created to control the mind into sedation of gaming, and furthermore a feeling and series of reasoning for having chosen which games and teams to end up with yet nevertheless being enacted and not participated necessarily. Am I too far off to come to this conclusion after realizing these ties having been in a limbo and dance from then to now?

Even though you described here in the video that this free-play chip will not only "coin the game up" but start it playing, why is that so much "better" than just having the button that's parallel to one of the coin sensors "coin the game up" and then having to press a player button like normal even though games with free play built in don't auto-start the playing? Why is that difference such a "big deal" (besides for those games that require a very short "coin pulse")? Also, hehe, you don't remember if you had the CPU in it with the 7th ROM chip? Obviously it's not gonna work without a CPU, huh?
@HelloKittyFanMan.
@HelloKittyFanMan. 8 жыл бұрын
What's interesting, @Mac Donalds, is that supposed need for more than one CPU just because of more than one game. Well, the Play Choice 10 doesn't have 10 CPUs, does it (and isn't MAME)? The 60-in-1 (also not MAME), doesn't have 60 CPUs, right? So why does a multigame VS. need one? But even then, this one *isn't* a multigame system, being a Unisystem, so why does *it* need 2 CPUs? Heck, why is it even called a "VS." if it doesn't have anything to oppose or be opposed by?
@onecircuit
@onecircuit 8 жыл бұрын
+MaxxFordham The real benefit is the auto-boot. Freeplay feature is really a bonus. Without the auto-boot someone would have to explain to people how to start the game and/or run over every time you have friends over and hold P1+P2 when the game boots up. Ain't nobody got time for dat. :)
@HelloKittyFanMan.
@HelloKittyFanMan. 8 жыл бұрын
No, @OneCircuit Adam, my questions weren't about how to get around the boot hangup. You just added that to fix this game. My questions were really about the big deal not to have to make as many button presses to go from "coin-up" to game start.
@beeblebrux2112
@beeblebrux2112 8 жыл бұрын
+MaxxFordham Damn, that's a lot of questions! On the playchoice and 60-in-1, only 1 game is ever played at the same time, so 1 CPU can do the job. For the vs cabinet, the games are made to be compatible with either the single monitor cabinet or the dual. On dual monitor cabinets, it is possible to play the two different games at the same time, hence a dedicated CPU is required for each game. On the single monitor cabinet (shown in this video), this doesn't apply, but the board is still the same (since it's compatible with both). Hypothetically, if a Playchoice-10 had 10 monitors, and allowed for all 10 games to be played at the same time independently, the system would need 10 CPUs. I think this game has some specific quirks that have to be handled in order to make it work in a unisystem (like having the second CPU, even though it may not be necessary). The holding of the buttons to make it boot is also pretty strange. They really don't explain exactly what the quirks are, I think they just found a configuration that works and went with it

Mac Donalds, "V.S." or "VS" would be something other than "versus," but "Vs.," "vs.," and "VS." are short for "versus." I wasn't really asking about drilling holes. I was asking about the number of button presses.
