The issue leafs fans forget about is that, while it is true the cap is going up considerably over the next few years, it goes up for every team in the NHL… the problem isn’t that the leafs can’t afford Nylander, it’s that the Leafs now how 0 team friendly contracts, something that legit cup contenders always seem to have.

Usually, players cash in AFTER they win a cup. There's no motivation for the core 4 to win getting these contracts. I often wonder how much MLSE really cares about a cup win. The stadium is always full regardless of what they do.

Gold team won a cup with only 1 10 mil player. Boilers have 2 10 mil never won a cup with them. Leafs have 3-4 havent made it past the first round in forever and no cup. NHL being a copycat league is now a lie since no one is building teams like the Knights and keep doing

Everyone asks "WHAT ABOUT THEIR D AND GOALTENDING" but the true irony is that every playoffs, its not our D or even goaltending that lets us down, its the offence. Our stars can't score as much in tighter games, and there is no depth scoring because we literally cannot afford it. 2019: 1 goal in gm 7 vs BOS 2020: shutout by CBJ in game 5 21: 1 goal in gm 7 vs MTL 22: 1 goal in gm 7 vs TB 23: 2 goals in gm 5 vs FLA, both Matthews and Tavares fired blanks the whole series

According to Capfriendly. "After signing Nylander to an 8 year/$11.5M AAV extension, we now show the Leafs have a projected cap hit of $66,438,000 in 2024-25, based on 14 contracts (9F-3D-2G) currently on the active roster. This leaves $21.062M in cap space for 9 spots." Nylander also has a full no movement clause throughout the 8 year contract. Good luck Leafs!

This. Matthew Knies puts up 20 goals and 40 points next year? Too bad you can't pay him anything. On top of this Toronto needs a long-term solution to second line centre if they want to be competitive. You can hope that Tavares takes a big pay cut and manages to stay effective at 2C for several more years, but realistically in two years you probably need to seriously consider another option. 2C is usually a pretty expensive position to fill and unless you really believe in Easton Cowan/Fraser Minten taking big steps, the Leafs don't have anyone internally that can fill it.
@jr5546
@jr5546 4 ай бұрын
@@wesgreig271 Knies will be an RFA when his rookie deal is done, and that’s also the year Tavares’ deal ends. If there is an offer sheet, and it’s more than $5 million (at the current cap), the signing team would need to give the Leafs a 1st and a 3rd. That knocks 10 teams out of the running at the moment (things would be different in 2 year depending on trades since the picks need to be their own). At $6.5 it’s a 1st, 2nd and 3rd. And at $8.5 it’s two 1sts, a 2nd and a 3rd. Though I doubt the $8.5 is realistic unless he plays a lot better than he has. Chances are, he’ll be signing a bridge deal, or a halfway bridge where it’s a shorter deal like Matthews to take advantage of a rising cap. That’s the long way of saying I think Knies will be staying. I guess time will tell, but the “The Leafs won’t be able to resign X” people were wrong the last couple times. Maybe they’ll be wrong again 🤷🏻‍♂️ (you’re not the first person to talk about Knies leaving). The centre thing does seem like a crap shoot at the moment though. Might be they don’t resign Tavares and try and get an FA C like they did with JT. Probably won’t be JT quality though. Draisaitl would be a free agent that year though 😬 j/j

nylanders salary in a vacuum isnt the issue, its a microcosm of the greater issue with this team. how many playoff series have we won under the guise that paying 4 forwards 50% of your cap is a successful model? we are worse defensively than in a long time, our goaltending is 1 injury away from being a complete disaster so naturally the solution is to pay a winger who is 33rd in scoring in the NHL since entering the league, top 5 money while having LESS money to fix the other glaring issues on the roster(defense, depth, goaltending) make it make sense please...

People have a lot of recency bias. Marner has outproduced Nylander every season but this one, and is a far better defensive player, being relied on in all situations for many seasons. Now I think we're seeing Willy start to really take off offensively, and is driving play at a level Marner maybe never has. Will it last? Who knows, but its great to watch. But there definitely seems to be a lot of fans that are happy to completely ignore Nylanders lack of defensive acumen. For $11.5M I'd certainly prefer more attention to defensive detail.. But we'll see. I'm glad he's a Leaf for years to come. Just odd how 10.9M was considered an obscene overpay for a player who has routinely outperformed a player now signed to 11.5 (and yes, I know the cap % is still lower).

JT takes less or is gone.(same thing give in to the high $ demand you are doomed) likely the 24-25 season will be a "lame duck" season as I just don't think they will be able to put together a fully decent team. maybe they can but I just don't know as they will only have $21,062,000 in cap space to work with and you need at least 10 spots filled. lets say bert and domi resign with the same $ that leaves 12.5m in space for 8 guys. with 5 D spots open and 3F open. Can bring in the rooks but how will they play? they may be good but its unlikely to be instant success. Apparently getting less than 1 point per game for 7 seasons straight, barely breaking 1 last season, and then finally getting pretty good numbers this season, which you have nowhere proved is going to be a consistent thing, means you earn a $4m raise, and a greater salary than Ovechkin and Crosby. Not a single core player on this team is worth the money they are being paid.

@deltagolavista1 4 ай бұрын
As a Leaf hater… I am laughing. If he was to hit UFA status, no team would have given him this amount of money. It’s an over payment by about $2.5M. If Matthews wasn’t over paid by about a $1M, I would be more receptive of it. But that’s $3.5M, equivalent to a middle six winger salary. It is also going to hurt negotiating with other players. No one, unless they are about to retire and have a cushy head office job waiting for them (hello Spezza, Geo), is going to accept less than their market value if your top stars aren’t willing to take a pay cut. This contract is also poor asset management. Marner is basically out the door for nothing with this signing. He won’t take a pay cut and he won’t waive his no move clause. Why would he help a fan base that has turned on him the last few years? Nylander also reeks of a player who will regress after being paid. If the term was similar to Matthews, I wouldn’t hate it as much , but even a slight regression from this season puts him into over payment territory. Add in a full no move, and buyout proof (buying out only his last two years in 2030 and 31 will still cost the Leafs a cap hit of over $10M, amplifies that the team is stuck with this player unless they find a way to ship him to Robidas Island. Good Luck Leaf fans. I wouldn’t be celebrating too hard.

I think the Leafs have had a situation where their players have played really well in the years that mattered most for making money. Example 1, Matthews scoring 40 as a rookie and 4 in his first game immediately put a superstar label on him that was always gonna get him paid. If he was just an average first overall pick that broke out in year 2 or 3, his contracts look way different. Example 2, Mitch Marner went from a 60 point to 90 point guy in year 2 to 3. If that was year 3 to 4, his current contract probably isn't even 8 million. And the last example, if Nylander played like he did last year or a little bit worse than this top 10 player in the league season he's having, he doesn't even get 11 and maybe not even 10. For the longest time people spoke about Mackinnon having the best contract in the league, which he obviously did, but he had that contract because he wasn't a superstar until year 5 in the league. Toronto, it's not a bad thing your players have always been good, in fact its a really really good thing and likely means they'll always be good. So why not focus on the fact that you have amazing talent locked for the future?

i think the misconception about nylander is that he's only been elite this year and last, yes his point totals have become elite but in terms of offensive production, he has been an elite producer of offense for 4 years now, so glad that everythings falling in place for him, a truly elite winger in this league on pace to beat DARYL SITTLER'S best season as a leaf and potentially can beat DOUG GILMOUR's all time leafs points record of 127 (nylander is on pace for 120!!). He was fired for playing games on his contract renewal at the 11th hour when everything was pretty much already agreed upon. He essentially said he wanted full autonomy and significantly more money. Now a contract year comes and he blows everything he’s ever done out of the water? And signs 8 years. The only player who has motivation issues wanted guaranteed 8 years. Am I the only one who thinks all of that is a problem? We had to get rid of Lafferty this year because 1.2 was too much. If the big 3 took 1.5 less we’d have 4.5 mil to sign 1-3 players. @@pomerlain8924 The teams that have won cups also have not had the same level of forward talent that the leafs have. Maybe that says something, idk but u can’t let a player of his caliber walk for nothing so you pay what it takes to keep him around

@@sampicano Crosby signed that contract in 2013 so that’s pretty irrelevant today. Tkachuk signed his before his excellent playoff run with Florida that would have increased his value by 1.5M+ easily. No other team has this level of elite talent up front, its just what it costs

@@andrewaikins2575But those teams that won cups did not pay each of their forwards over $10M to strangle their cap space. Hence, they had money available to pay for competent goaltending and a strong defense. On the Avs, it's not just about MacKinnon, Nichuskin and Raantinen. They have strong d-corp anchored by Makar and Toews. They won a cup with Darcy Kuemper in net. MacKinnon is the only one making over $10M, and that came AFTER they won a cup. In Tampa, Stamkos could have made more, but he left money on the table to so they could pay for bottom 6 depth and another defensemen. And in Vegas, outside of Eichel, they don't really have any star forwards. But it was a forward who was deemed to small, that wasn't a star, that won the Conn Smythe. And they didn't overpay a few guys. So they had a stout d-corp competent goaltending, and were able to roll four lines. The Leafs have inconsistent goaltending, and very slow d-corp, and no scoring depth. And on top of that, their highest paid players are soft. And as they are the so-called leaders, their softness sets the time for the rest of the team. And also the important question: What have the Leafs won with all this elite talent? One playoff series in 7 years. But sure, let's overpay 4 forwards who haven't won anything notable. Let's just be happy with their regular season stats, since it seems that's all that matters to fans like you.

Next year will be tough cap wise after that things ease up. Tavares' contract concludes then and with the cap going up there will be breathing space. Well if according to your implication Shanahan insisted on keeping the core four it's his Queen Elizabeth or Titanic to sink or swim/sail with. Good luck to Leafs fandom. Not processing this contract entailed trading some of this core group. If the Leafs weren't going to pay some other team would have. So take it from there and may G-d bless!
