As a guitarist, Willie has always been a huge influence on my playing. Of course, he's most known for his amazing songwriting, but his guitar playing is attached to the hip of his songs. While on rare occasions, I have heard him play some technically difficult and faster leads, for the most part, he has kept those tricks in his back pocket. Instead, he focuses on the melody and combines it with his unique vocal phrasing. While Willie is labeled as a country artist, which he certainly is, there's a massive element of jazz peppered with folk and blues in his playing. He is one of the great epitomes of American music. Like Duke Ellington, Ira Gershwin, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, he will be forever etched into the annals of American music.

He seems so happy to be there at the end. Like he is just in love with the moment and interacting with people. I'm sure there were many people there who had never even heard that song before.

The best concert I ever had the pleasure to attend was in the early '80s when Jessie, Waylon, and Willie came to Calgary! Jessie opened and led into Waylon's set. After a brief intermission, Willie came on and played for over two hours! Because of a limit on the number of tickets bought by one person (there were 7 of us and the limit was 6) I got the single seat for Willie's set, floor, 2nd row, dead center! ! ! I will never forget!

It shows you how great his fellow musicians are. Playing out of time the way Willie likes to can really screw you up. It's not that Willie can't play in time. Remember he's one of the "outlaws" so he defies even rules of music. It's his music. He can do it if he wants--He's earned it!
