Tunes342 haha right, and you know I have brown hair too? You know nothing about me so save me your lecture. No matter how you look at it, stop living in the past and move on. Athletes will progressively get better and better as years move on due to multiple reasons and advancements in technology, health etc. but of course their are athletes that were so great they can compete in any era. Of course Wilt was great, but even the gaurds that played around him are no where near the level of talent that guards have today. Thats just reality. And that stands for every position.

+Josh Gets Buckets your opinion,whats changed are the rules. Wilt was a track star and high jump champion,benching over 400lbs and 40 time was 4.6 when he was at 290lbs. He would be the fastest and strongest player in any era. The greatest defensive centers and offensive centers come from the 60's and 70's. Lets look at guards. The greatest backcourt was Sam Jones and John Havlicek,some other great guards, Oscar Robertson,Walt Frazier,Earl Monroe,Jerry West,Nate Archibald. The forwards,Elgin Baylor,Connie Hawkins,Rick Barry. Wilt is arguably the GOAT, get over it

Wilt in his scoring years would do the same to Kareem that he did to everyone else. Wilt was a better athlete and his fadeaway couldn't be stopped either. Wilt would probably block even more of Kareem's shots as well in his younger years.

Wilt has broken a mans toe with a dunk. Dislocated a players shoulder with a block. Lifted a man in the air with him when he tried to wrap him up before the shot. Lifted a player off the floor to break up a fight and turned him around and said "we won't have any more of this." Dude is an absolute monster

Absolutely phenomenal. He's not only the GOAT he's the entire farm. There is literally no other player remotely as dominant as he was. Kareem would be the closest. He'd probably average 70 points a game in today's NBA with barely no centers and you literally can't touch a player. This man was a world class athlete, high jumper, long jumper, volleyball player, could bench damn near 600 pounds, palm a bowling ball and run like a sprinter. Are you kidding me? I wish he was born 3 decades later because we'll never really get to fathom how good Wilt was. He makes LeBron look like a D league bench warmer. Jordan, Kobe, Shaq I mean literally their best MVP years would have been a bad year for Wilt in his prime. He averaged 50 freaking points a game. Blocked 27 shots in a game. What the hell. Slap yourself next time you claim someone other than Wilt Chamberlain was the best basketball player EVER. That's on earth and every other planet in the known galaxy. There is no who's the best debate. It's Wilt period. Side note: I never ever saw someone block Kareem's skyhook before! WOW. He had to reach up damn near in the sky to block that shot. Is Wilt the only player or person to ever do that? At least on film. I always considered that skyhook the only ever "unstoppable move". Damn and Wilt stopped it. What an amazing athlete.

@marcusmurphy2680
@marcusmurphy2680 8 жыл бұрын
+Dom Neither are the greatest at their position. Both Shaq and Wilt were great offensively, but average defensively. The greatest at each position must be both great offensively and defensively. Hakeem Olajuwon is the greatest center of all-time, and it's not even close. The regular season has little to do with how great a player is, you have to do it in the playoffs to be the greatest. Between Hakeem, Shaq and Wilt - Hakeem and Shaq upped their level of play in the playoffs and outplayed their opposition, Wilt did not. But what separates Hakeem and Shaq is that Hakeem dominated on the defensive end as well. Career Playoff Rankings - Hakeem, Shaq and Wilt (Best Years) : 1. Hakeem Olajuwon - 27ppg - 12rpg - 3apg - 3bpg - 57 TS% 2. Shaquille O'Neal - 26ppg - 12 rpg - 3 apg - 2bpg - 57 TS% 3. Wilt Chamberlain - 29ppg - 27rpg - 5apg - N/A - 52 TS% Now take into consideration how much more mpg Wilt played and how much faster paced the game used to be. I'm not a person that hates on Wilt's era, because it was a great era, it's just that it was easier to produce in that era because of pacing. If you adjust ppg, rpg and apg into per 100 possessions, it's clear that Wilt is third behind Hakeem and Shaq. Hakeem, Shaq and Wilt were all dominant in their own rights, but not as dominant on both ends like Hakeem.
@Dxminicy0

+Marcus Murphy I don't get your playoff ranking when Wilts stats are all higher then Shaq and most likely got more blocks . I understand he played more minutes but that's because he could as he was such an insane athlete
@marcusmurphy2680
@marcusmurphy2680 8 жыл бұрын
+Dom His stats are better because it was easier to get stats in the 50's-70's. The pacing was a lot faster, which means more possessions, which means more points, rebounds and assists. For example, in Wilt's era, on average, there was 15-20 more field goals attempted than in Hakeem's/Shaq's era. Which means there was way more opportunities to get points, rebounds and assists. I can also cancel your point out about him playing more mpg because he was an insane athlete, by saying he played more mpg because he stat padded in blow out situations, which he did countless times.

+SHANE DEMARS Wilt is so far away from Hakeem on the defensive end it's laughable. Hakeem has shut down and outplayed players of the magnitude that Wilt couldn't even dream of doing. 1986 WCF vs Kareem - Hakeem outperformed Kareem in 4/5 categories, as well as leading his team in 4/5 and sent the Lakers home without his starting guard John Lucas, suspended for cocaine. 1993 WCSF vs Shawn Kemp - Hakeem led the team in 5/5 categories and shut down Shawn Kemp in 6/7 games, yet Hakeem's team was so bad that they still couldn't win. Karl Malone, 1994, 1995, 1997, and 1998 - After averaging between 50% to 54% shooting in the 4 regular seasons before meeting Hakeem in the playoffs, Malone shot lower than 50% on 14 different occasions in 21 playoff meetings - or in 2/3 of his meetings with Hakeem. Hakeem also sent Malone packing in the 1994 and 1995 Playoffs. In 1997, Hakeem became the oldest person to lead a team in 4/5 categories for a playoff series, but his team couldn't get the job done against the Jazz. in 1998, Hakeem had a knee injury that made him a shell of himself and he had no hope of getting out the first round following that injury. Charles Barkley, 1994, 1995 - After averaging 49% to 50% in both regular seasons before running into Olajuwon in the playoffs, Barkley shot lower than 49% on 9 different occasions in 14 playoff meetings against Hakeem. And Hakeem sent the Suns home both times with amazing Game 7 performances both years. 1994 Finals vs Ewing - Hakeem shut down Ewing in 6 out of 7 games, 36% for the series, and carried the Rockets to the title as they became the only team since the 1961 Celtics to win with the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th scoring options all shooting under 43%. 1995 WCF vs Robinson and Rodman - Hakeem destroyed two top 10 defenders of all-time at the same time in this series, and shut down Robinson, who only had 2 good games in the whole series. 1995 Finals vs Shaq - Shaq averaged 1 more rebound, and less than 1 more block and less than 1 more assist. Hakeem scored 5 more ppg than Shaq (outscored him every game - even though Shaq was the regular season scoring champ) and in the entire Finals had 8 steals to Shaq's 1 steal. Shaq also had twice as many turnovers as Hakeem. Shaq barely squeezed by Hakeem in those categories but Hakeem destroyed him in the rest.

Wilt been doing fadeaway jumpers before MJ and Kobe, made the most difficult layups, had almost an 8ft wingspan (which is scary for a human being), been doing skyhooks before Kareem came into the league, was super fast on the fastbreak - Wilt was way ahead of his time…… it’s freaking crazy how many inventions he did on the court that paved the way for the greatest superstars that we know today. Wilt could have played all positions in his time if he wanted to. This clip shows that Wilt was the most athletic center and most dominant player in the NBA. Love the confidence in the voices of Connie Hawkins and Earl Monroe when they state that Wilt is the best player. Connie: "Oh, Wilt Chamberlain, no question about it." Question to Earl the Pearl: "Best center, Russell or Chamberlain?" Answer from Earl: "Chamberlain" Question: "Best player ever, Michael Jordan or Lebron James or (stated halfheartedly) someone else?" Answer: "Wilt Chamberlain" Love that the "sports expert" asking him is basically saying here are your two choices and Earl gives the answer that modern sports analyst hate, because only recognizing the greatness of modern players keeps their jobs relevant.
@buckfan1969
@buckfan1969 7 жыл бұрын
The players would know better than any of us here. I think Monroe finished by saying something like 'here's a guy who's been retired for 40 years and still holds 90 records'. No less an authority than Jerry West, who clearly doesn't live in the past, because he was the Lakers GM for years after, has said he'd love to see Wilt in his prime playing today; that they would be embarrassed. I think ESPN and the rest of their ilk are nothing more than promoters for their companies selling the public that these are the best players ever so we'll watch their channel. And the youngsters, who've seen nothing else, drink the Kool-Aid. Rule changes have decimated the game I once loved, and the 'Look at Me' culture of today has players in all sports showboating shamelessly. The kids take the showboating for athleticism because they don't know any better.
@T.Ramby11
@T.Ramby11 7 жыл бұрын
I agree, buckfan. West has helped the Lakers and Warriors win championships in the modern age, and helped the Grizzlies become relevant, and still has said he has not seen a center as great as Wilt, which means a lot coming from the guy who signed Shaq. The game has come to a screeching halt in recent years, and the big man has become nearly irrelevant. I am hoping with the emergence of players like Joel Embiid, Karl-Anthony Townes, Andre Drummond, etc. we will once again see the epic center battles that were prevalent in the golden age of the NBA (1960s to 1990s). I could go off on the sports analysts of today, but I'd basically just be reiterating your point, which I wholeheartedly agree with.

Thanks. I don't think you'll see a resurgence of big men unless they do away with the 3 point line.
@T.Ramby11
@T.Ramby11 7 жыл бұрын
Man, I hope not... One suggestion I heard recently that I liked was pushing back the 3-point line several feet. Check out these numbers of three 7-game NBA Finals series for 3-point shots attempted and total points per game: 1984 NBA Finals: 42 3PA total for BOTH teams. Each team averaged over 115 points per game. 1994 NBA Finals: 226 3PA total. Each team averaged just over 86 points per game. 2016 NBA Finals: 422 3PA total. Each team hovered around 100 points per game. I don't hate the 3-point line, but I think we are seeing a dangerous trend that seems to be gravitating toward a sort of lazy man's basketball where plays are being designed around and are dependent on the 3-point shot. I would very much welcome pushing back the line.
@buckfan1969
@buckfan1969 7 жыл бұрын
Pushing it back might help, but yes, from what I can see they only throw it inside so the center can kick it back out to whomever has the open 3. And if they're not open as the shot clock winds down they throw up a prayer. Or they try to clear out one side and let the star go one-on-one. I think it's hurt the game a lot, and it's really made it unnecessary to have a dominant big man today. Too bad; they took a great game and screwed it up. Oh well....

As a matter of fact, I kept looking for a center to come along who could do what Wilt could do on both ends of the court. It never happened. Kareem, great, for sure, but no. Ralph Sampson, nope. Shaquille, not quite. Artis, who I really had hopes for, no. Laugh, if you want, But Bill Walton, if not for the injuries, might have come closer than anybody, but no. "Abdul Jabbar played 20 seasons to Wilts 13, and yet Chamberlain has several thousand more lifetime rebounds. In the twilight of his career, a 35 year old Wilt led the Lakers to victory over the Bucks and a 25 year old Jabbar during the 1972 playoffs. Even more astounding, was wilt blocked 20 shots in two consecutive games in that series, and 11 of those blocked shots were on Kareem. Who the heck ever did that to Jabbar. Makes you wonder what Wilt would have done in his prime. As great as Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, and Magic Johnson were, none of them had the impact or dominance of Wilt Chamberlain. The rules of the game were altered upon Wilts arrival into the league. Modern day fans talk of Shaq being the greatest center of all-time. Does anyone out there think Shaq could have blocked 11 Kareem shots in two games? " Excerpt from Wilt's biography, Wilt Larger than Life.

What a shock that Wilts biography serves up fish stories meant to prop him up ahead of players who immediately won, won more often, were better team players, and made the game something greater than he ever managed to, and modern day fans who thought Shaq was the best were puppets...Kareem is better than both Wilt or Shaq...He won 6 titles-as many as Shaq and Wilt combined, and unlike either center he was clutch and could shoot the ball...and a good amt of those swats Wilt got on this reel including those I can see vs Kareem are uncalled goal-tending violations-refs arent calling em perhaps because theyre in awe of seeing this giant man getting 12-13feet into the air, but the fact is if the ball is in the air on its way down towards the hoop youre not legally allowed to touch it....As far as the rebounding is concerned, it wasnt Kareems greatest attribute, but Kareem was far better at making the outlet pass to get the fast break started once he got a reb on def-whereas Wilt often made the guard come back to him and killed his own teams potential fast break...Kareem also played half his career during the 80s when players esp on his team were hitting 50+% of their FGs compared to the 60s when players other than Wilt werent even close to those fg%s-so there were a ton of more rebounds available to Wilt even if he hadnt been competing for rebounds against a generation of smaller less athletic players...With all due respect to his shotblocking ability, his era completely predates the evolution of the game where players began playing above the rim, developed and mastered the kind of midair moves necessary to have any chance of being able to drive and score against freak athletic 7+ft shot-blockers.

If Wilt had Auerbach as his team coach, things would have been different. Regardless, more people went to see Wilt, Wilt displayed more phenomenal play than Mr. Russell, Wilt always outplayed everyone on the court. Russell and his team of HOF allstars were the greatest team ever. Wilt played on 2 of the 5 best teams wins and losses records, more than any other player. My friend Bob and I were both watching a game against Boston about 1967 or so. Larry Siegfried, about 6' 1" and 185 lb. grabbed a rebound and on the way down Wilt put one hand under the ball and lifted it up to the extant of his reach with Larry still attached, looked down court and started to throw a pass. At the last moment, Larry realized he was about to get passed and so he let the ball go and the pass went off to a streaking 76er and it was 2 points. We both watched it happen.

I absolutely believe you. Was at a game between the 76rs and the Cincinnati Royals in 1966, I believe. Sat right behind the basket. Royals had Wayne Embry at center (about 6'8", but 280 pounds of muscle). Emery on defense stood behind Wilt and leaned on him with all his weight, trying to push him away from the basket. At one point Wilt made a subtle move like adjusting his cuff, and Embry bounced off the stanchion right next to me. The man was unbelievably strong. Seeing him on tv doesn't convey the power of the man.

Embry was a beast. Super aggressive, but I thought he was playing with the Bullits with Earl the Pearl back then. Never seen anything like him since either. As Bill Russel characterized him, Wilt was a "monster".

You're right about Wilt; the one person I heard compared to him the most was Artis Gilmore, but there are clips out there showing Wilt tossing him around the paint like he was nothing. When we were coming out of the tunnel to our seats for that game, Wilt was being interviewed by a local tv sports guy. I was 3-4 feet away from him as I walked by. Not just the height; the veins were popping out of his arms as he stood talking to the guy and the muscles in his shoulders just oozed power. When Wilt bounced Embry off the stanchion, he turned around and faced Embry. Wayne just put his hands up as if to say 'No Mas'. I was about 16 at the time; made a hell of an impression on me.

Wilt averaged 6.3 blocks per game in NCAA. But remember, when Wilt was in the NCAA they didn't have the shot clock. Teams would often hold the ball to run down time when playing against Wilt to prevent Wilt's team from getting the ball and getting a chance to take the lead in points. So there were a lot less possessions/shots per game than we're used to. So actually, he would have averaged even more than 6.3 per game if there was a 24 second shot clock in those NCAA games.

Connie Hawkins attributes wilts athleticism to his build. Nothing was crazy out of proportion except his size. He wore a size 12 in college and 13 shoe in the pro's. His hands were 11 inches wide.which are huge. He has a good point. I can'r see Shaq high jumping 6'6 of running the 440 with his size 19's or 20's. It makes sense. Huge feet can'r be good for athleticism. I think that;s why he was so fast. he's also 2 inches taller than Shaq. Today measuring in they're sneakers, Wilt would have been 7'3. He was taller than Shaq at 58 years old, the video is on You Tube. Wilt tries to intimidate Shaq and Ewing. Funny stuff.

Excellent point Red. And if you recall, Russell himself mentions in his tribute book to Auerbach that he thought he averaged AT LEAST 15 blocks per game in college! (I know some might retort "if he was playing against taller, more athletic & intelligent black players, no way on earth he even approaches that figure." Probably not, but I still am convinced it would've been double figures, say 10-11 or so) So what do you honestly believe Wilt's blocks would've been had Kansas' opp. not stalled the ball against him? Furthermore don't you also believe Dippy would've been 1st player(except maybe for Mikan) to lead NCAA Div. 1 teams in pts/reb prior to X-man in 84-85 at Wichita State, let alone pts, reb and blk?

Mr. Research - If his opponents weren't stalling the ball against him in NCAA, I think he would have averaged at least 8-9 blocks. In the NBA, he could have had a season where he averaged 10 blocks, as I believe the legendary NBA statistician Harvey Pollack once said that Wilt did so. For Wilt's career, I would say he may have averaged around 7-8 blocks per game.

Excellent work. Especially on putting his age in those little spots when he was well into his 30s as a Laker. The age is a significant mitigating factor - but in my humble opinion his career-threatening knee tendon rupture in 1969 is really a huge consideration too. Most of his Laker career was played after this devastating injury - he was clearly never the same again after that. And it happened after he had played so many years and minutes already and when he was already well into his 30s. That's important context that a lot of people don't know about Wilt. Incorporating that somehow might be a good idea...

Some of us here may not realize as well that the ABA officially recorded offensive & defensive rebounds as well, and Artis DOES officially have more than KG and/or Moses, or at least thereabouts as many. But concerning percentage of rebounds coming from the offensive end, I honestly believe, after further investigation, nobody, not even Chamberlain himself, has a higher percentage of offensive boards than Mo'

The key moment in the '72 season was when the new Laker coach, Bill Sharman, talked Wilt into being mainly a defensive stopper, rebounder, and initiator of the Laker fast break. The Lakers were a dominant defensive team that year, mainly because of Wilt shutting down the paint. With Wilt dominating on defense and the outlet passes mainly going to West to start the fastbreak, West led the NBA in assists, scored over 25 a game, the Lakers won 69 games and the title. West was a terror on the defensive perimeter because he had Wilt backing him up. In my opinion, that Laker team was the greatest team in NBA history.

Wilt would know, of course, but I thought the 72 Lakers were better. Goodrich, West, and Wilt had great years and that team had excellent depth. The Lakers also won 33 in a row which is still a record.

I can't even imagine how intimidating it was to play against Wilt. His size, strength, speed and skill are obvious but when his fierce competitive spirit is added to all that . . . sheesh! He was so quick that he could start a block even *after* an opponent committed to a shot. I'm watching a lot of this at .25x and even at relatively low rez, it's amazing. WCA, thanks for this archive!

I truly believe that the hype is why they lie as today’s athletes on a whole are the product of processed foods but to say they are stronger.. oh no... the core strength of many in the past far outweigh today’s Kentucky or McD Athlete as there was far less opportunity for consuming fast food back then, as people ate better and were more physically active than today’s smart phone athletes...

What frustrates me is the recent narrative that portrays Wilt as being a dominant shot blocker in only his last two seasons in the league. I realize that this narrative is created by those who never saw Wilt play, but there is ample documentation of his defensive dominance from the moment he stepped on the court. Prime post-season examples include Wilt averaging 9.2 blocks in the 1967 playoffs, 9.9 blocks in the 1968 playoffs, and 10.3 blocks against Nate Thurmond's Warriors in the 1969 playoffs. If you want dominance at both ends of the floor, check out the following stat lines. In Game 5 of the 1962 Eastern Conference Playoffs, Wilt dominated Johnny "Red" Kerr to the tune of 56 points, 35 rebounds, and 12 blocked shots. In the 1964 Western Conference Finals, Wilt destroyed Hall of Famer Zelmo "Big Z" Beaty in Games 2 and 7. In Game 2, Wilt had 28 points, 27 rebounds, 5 assists, and 15 blocked shots. In Game 7, Wilt put up 39 points, 30 rebounds, 6 assists, and 12 blocked shots. By any measure, the top 3 defensive centers of all-time are Bill Russell, Nate Thurmond, and Wilt Chamberlain.

He actually blocked a few of Jabbars Skyhooks. Which were unblockable because of the height. But Wilt could reach it and block it. Amazing legendary player! Great video and comments. I grew up watching Wilt vs Russell. The greatest rivalry ever, nothing really close. The greatest offensive player directly facing the greatest defensive player of all time. Happy to say, the Celtics almost always came away with the win when it mattered most. A lot of respect for those two. I was a great fan of Sam Jones and met him years later. He described Wilt chasing him all over the court after a hard foul. Wilt warned him not to try to drive to the basket. Sam obeyed.

No other player has a career average of over 20 rebounds, with, unofficially, probably 15 to 20 blocked shots, per game. With altered, missed shots, not counted, but still important, those stats would cut 20 t0 30 points from the opposing team's score. I think, unarguably, Wilt was the best defensive player to ever play the game. Add that he averaged over 30 ppg, throughout that same career. Also, Boston had to work their butts off to beat any team Wilt was on, and just by a very few points. Number of championships aside, he is my choice for the greatest of all time. I have watched him play, real time, many times, on TV. I have never seen anybody else do the all the things he could do, on both ends of the court.
