This was the finest match I ever watched Andy play. And it wasn’t enough. There is a reason why Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic dominated tennis for so long. They’re simply better than other players even when those players bring their A game.

Mishits on decisive moments. That volley in the second set. Those enormous misses he hit with his frame in the last game. Like the ball bounced on sand rather than on grass. Poor Andy, he deserved one Wimbledon, just couldn't handle the pressure, like Goran. Only difference was Federer was his opponent and not Rafter.

This match was epic! I remember watching it live and being on the edge of my seat. In my opinion, I put this match right there with the 2008 final. I think the 2008 final will always be remembered simply for the fact that it was Nadal on the other side of the net from Roger. The history those two had leading up the 2008 final, and the climax of that 5th set will always be remembered. But the 2009 final was just as epic. It was a heartbreaking loss for Andy, and although I was rooting for Roger, I felt terrible for Andy. I wouldn't have been disappointed had he won this match.

To me, this is the match that broke Roddick's heart. I've never seen statistics for a match so in favor of the losing tennis player. First serve %, both service winning %, etc. I think I remember a post-match analysis showing ALL major stats in Roddick's favor. Yet Roger - nothing but magic could've managed this win.
@Aetherwave
@Aetherwave 6 жыл бұрын
That's actually false. When Roddick flubbed that volley, the stats were pretty much equal in both of the first two sets. Up to that point, Roddick had been remarkably clutch to be on the edge of going two sets to love up despite not playing better (or worse) than Federer. After that, Federer was clearly the better player in the third (Roddick only won 3/32 points on return in that set), Roddick was the better player in the fourth, the fifth was equal until Federer saved double BP, then he was the better player and eventually wore Roddick out and won.

Kinda the same scenario happened in this match, meaning the better player lost. Roger winning 2 tie-breaks and 1 break of serve. The 4 setpoints in the 2nd set tie-break will hunt Rodick for the rest of his life just like those two Champion points will hunt Roger...both happened on the same court exactly 10yrs apart! And even more, striking similarities both matches ended on a forehand shank.

Roddick didn't kill Murray at all. It was a tight match Roddick just had a bit more luck & won via tiebreaks which he relied so heavily on throughout this tournament then ironically lost the final in the opposite manner but still Federer scored 10 more points than Roddick in this match overall despite serving a game less than Roddick. When people say "Roddick only had his serve broken once" he had the fastest serve in the game!! He did the least he could in his career with the serving weapon he had.

I never said pregnancy wasn't a big deal. I said she doesn't deserve credit for anything other than being pregnant. She showed up, didn't puke and didn't shit herself. Congratulations. She doesn't deserve credit for anything Roger has accomplished. Roger accomplished it, not her. He has made her life a fairy-tale, not the other way around. He could dump that lumpy bitch tomorrow and have 12 supermodels lined up to suck his dick. Saying wife deserves credit for her husbands success is like saying a caddy deserves credit for a golfer winning a championship.

Coming back from the 2008 lose, and the 2nd n 3rd tiebreaks, just incredible, which showed how decisive Federer is. In the 2nd, it's really unbelievable that Federer survived from 2-6 against such a huge serve player like Roddick, and the 3rd, Federer also proved the heart of a champ, only one point can he dominate the match, born champion. I'm always encouraged by the spirit of Roger in this match, just more than tennis.

up 6-2 in that tiebreak, he makes the huge mistake of chipping Fed's short shot to Fed's forehand, short and in middle of the court. That's a shot he wishes he had back. Fed's return of serve on that point was miraculous -- threw his racquet out and was rewarded. But, it still fell short. I almost felt Roddick coulda run around it and tried for a forehand winner.

As big a Rafa fan as I am, I fail to see how this match wasn't remembered as the best Wimbledon final in recent history. The 2008 final was incredible, but this was much closer, and Roddick was throwing everything at Federer. Loads more tense moments and pressure, and neither player lulled at all. Up until the 2018 semi-final between Nadal and Djokovic, I always thought of this final as perhaps the best match I'd seen at Wimbledon.

This is easily the fifth all-time greatest Wimbledon finals ever contested, after Borg-McEnroe 1980, Federer-Nadal 2008, Federer-Nadal 2007 and Becker-Edberg 1990. Note how Roddick pushed Federer harder than Nadal in 2007 and Djokovic in 2012. Very unfortunate Andy was the same generation as Fed, and never got to play 32-33 year-old Fed in 2014 or 2015 at Wimbledon. He came so close; one break of serve was all that separated them.
@tennisfan4282
@tennisfan4282 7 жыл бұрын
InsideOutBH Fed was below his best here unlike the matches with Nadal and Djokovic. And Djokovic has 2 wins vs Fed at Wimbledon and Nadal has one and Roddick 0. The 2014-15 Fed reached the finals dropping just one set was playing better than the 2009 Wimbledon Fed who had a off day. Fed would still be the live favourite to win. Even in 2014-15 at 32 nearly 33 and 33 nearly 34.
@InsideOutBH
@InsideOutBH 6 жыл бұрын
2009 was Federer at his grasscourt peak. He wasn't dealing with recovery from mono, he was younger, and playedwith the 90 sq inch frame so still had the old forehand with its extreme power. In 2014-2015 he was already multiple years out of his prime. He was already very old in tennis terms and had a very easy route to the finals, and only had to play Raonic and Murray in the semifinals. In 2012, he was *already past his prime* (just look at Djokovic 2017 to compare them at the same age) yet somehow still crushed Djokovic at Novak's absolute peak when Djokovic reached 3/4 Slam finals that year. 30 year-old vs. 24 years-old, Djokovic already had the advantage (nevermind 2014-2015), but Federer still beat him. Roddick just never had the fortune of playing a declined 34 year-old Federer who was losing to Gulbis, Wawrinka, and Seppi in the Slams.
@tennisfan4282
@tennisfan4282 6 жыл бұрын
InsideOutBH Federer was In his Prime in 2009 but he was sloppy in Wimbeldon and the French. In 2014-15 Wimby Fed just dropped a single set In In route to the Finals. He was better in 14-15 Wimby than he was in 2009. Federer was defo in his Prime in 2012 still after that that's when he his Prime ended. He played better in 2009 than he did in 2012. Roddick would lose even worse to the 14-15 hyper aggressive 97 inch racket easier. Roddick would lose to the old Federer who was even better on Faster surfaces at times. Fed reached the Finals of 2014-15 Wimbledon and USO 2015 just dropping 2 sets in 18 games. Even in 2004-07 he could not even do that. Fed was not at his best in Wimbledon 2009 and was making mistakes he would not make Usually.Fed Prime was 2004-12 and on fastcourts he is still at his best today. Murray in the SF is not easy and Fed put one his best performances on.
@tennisfan4282
@tennisfan4282 6 жыл бұрын
InsideOutBH 2009 FO he nearly lost to Haas and Del Po he got out of it he struggled those days. Federer faced Murray in the 2015 SF that's harder than most of the draws he had for his first 10 slams. He had no tough semi in 2009 WO his draw in 14-15 was a lot harder than it was in 2009 wimby. Fed was great in AO and USO but he lost the competition was tougher. Both FO 2009 and Wimbledon 2009 were much easier draws. Fed started playing well after he was down but for the first 2 sets he made mistakes he would not usually make. Those matches were of Wimbeldon. He still beat Wawrinka and Milos and then Murray. That's tougher than who Fed faced in the 2006-07 and 2009 Wimbledon SF. P97 frame is better bigger and more Powerful anyway. He has found his FH again not as good as it used to but his BH is getting more power.
