One of the most brutal performances ever in Roger Federer's career.
Prime Federer was just terrifying! With a winning record of over 95% in 2006.
In a day where Roger Federer turned a tennis match intro an art lesson,
Thank you, Roger for everything you have done for tennis!

Federer at his best imperious mode. First he breaks your rhythm, then breaks your serve, breaks whatever game plan you had going & then breaks your spirit. And Fernando Gonzalez was no wuss!. I'm a single backhand fan & l am a Nando fan at that. I didn't catch this match so this was a treat! Thanks so much. More please.

He is much longer than the opponents and its because he can reach the balls much easier. A natural advantage against the opponents.

Right, making them nearly as hard to win as Grand Slam titles. To a small extent, the switching to best of 3 also played a role in the number of Masters titles amassed by Djokovic and Nadal.

This final and AO final, Gonzo could not have played the first sets of both finals any better, but still got straight setted by Fed. Just ridiculous because both produced high quality points that didn't do the scorelines justice. Fortunately Gonzo was able to finally get Fed at the Shanghai Year End Championships in the round robin, but took alot out of him and ran out of gas for the rest of the round robin matches.

Fernando was as aggressive as Roger, but as good as Fernando played here Roger's aggression was too much. It was refreshing to see these highlights of both players taking in to one another. No fu fu mindless rallies waiting for the opponent to miss😊
@TheseHoesAreLoyal
@TheseHoesAreLoyal Ай бұрын
Has nothing to do with aggression. Federer just had much better point construction and shot selection as well as shot making than anyone else in 2004-2007. You seem to have started watching tennis in 2020.
@pawshands9706
@pawshands9706 Ай бұрын
@@TheseHoesAreLoyal Your "opinion" is a dud. Ofcourse aggression was an integral part of Roger's success. The point construction would mean squat without his aggressive play...🙄

Nah, the reason was González weak bh, everyone they played fh vs fh González was better, but everything else Roger was superior
@TheseHoesAreLoyal
@TheseHoesAreLoyal Ай бұрын
@@diegosotomiranda4107 That's actually one of the biggest reasons why Gonzo was just no match against Federer. He used slice like 80% of the time, makes Dimitrov look like an amateur when it comes to hitting more slice backhand than topspin backhand. Plus we all know Federer's forehand is just better overall than Gonzo's not in terms of power but in terms of consistency, angle, and variety. Plus Federer's serve was too good for Gonzo to handle, who didn't really have a good return of serve. Federer's serve from the get-go just set up the point to be bound to be won by himself, no chance for Gonzo. Meanwhile, Federer's slice also neutralized Gonzo's forehand to some degree.

A couple of those forehands from Fed in that 3rd set is what sets his prime apart from 2010-2020 or so. Movement and power wise he was something else back then.

Yeah, he was just insane. Prime Federer (from mid 2003 to all 2007) is by far the most shocking thing ever seen on a tennis court. This flow was interrupted by mononucleosis by the January 2008, with subsequent loss of confidence which took at least 6/7 months to heal. At the beginning of 2009 he was back almost at his previous level... well, "almost". By 2010, he was not basically error free like he was before, he had lost some of his explosiveness and also a little bit of court coverage, so he started to compensate by modifying his game shifting his zone even closer and closer to the baseline, until 2013, when he realized that the type of ultra aggressive game he was playing, was not possible with his old small headed racquet anymore.

One of prime Federer's secret weapon against hard hitters was to stand close to the baseline. Requires a lot of skill and timing to get it right.. but this is Federer we are talking about. When executed correctly, opponents have lesser time to recover from the previous shot as the ball will come back to them faster.. its like practicing against the wall but imagine if you stood closer to the wall.. there simply isnt enough time to react just observe 2nd and 3rd set!

Two things - I think Roger & Rafa deserve an extra 1/2 point in the Masters titles count for every best-of-5 sets title they won. By the time Novak started winning Masters they were best-of-3 sets. The other thing is - when I first saw DelPo I called him The Tall Gonzo With A Better Backhand. Hit everything hard and if that fails - hit it harder.

Anyone can smack a forehand. I guarantee every single ATP player could hit a forehand as hard as Gonzalez, but their playing styles is different. It would be one thing if Gonzo hit a variety of winners from different positions on the court and used angles or banana shots or lobs. No, it was literally just smacking at the ball. James Blake had a similar playing style
