A general note on this comment section: I am grateful for your interest in my videos. They are but one means of sharing the results of my research into historical combat with sword & shield with everybody who sees value in my work. Any video reflects my knowledge at the time of making. Because I am constantly learning, older videos might be out-dated, and I will eventually unlist them. However, you can still find them on my Patreon pages: www.patreon.com/Dimicator/posts On repeated request, I have re-opened comment sections with recent videos. So you are welcome to leave a comment if you feel you have something substantial to contribute on topic. I very much appreciate being pointed to relevant historical sources. I am not interested in hear-say and unreflected opinions. If a relevant question of yours has been left unanswered, then I might have missed it or the subject was already addressed elsewhere. I only check comments occasionally, so have some patience, please. Personally, I feel that constructive discussion on martial arts only exists in the analogue world, in a salle or a dojo. Please consider that your own valuable personal martial or military experience is inevitably reduced to mere assertions in a comment section. That is the nature of online media. There is zero competence control. This why I tend to shy away from such discussion. I find they are prone to misunderstanding, and generally a waste of time. Time that is better spent with actual research, practice and hands-on discussion. I am always open for the latter, and anyone with a serious interest is welcome to get in touch via private channels. Bad manners, boasting and babbling are a pest of the digital age. They have no place here.

If I understood correctly it's a matter of leverage. You want more lever for you and less for the other so you can win the bind and be in the right position to strike
@Yeknodathon5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! This makes perfect sense to me - that there is play and feel and work to prepare for a strike and that this play and work constantly changes and evolves. It is, in essence, a conversation.

Absolutely.

.. and that this conversation, just like any other, could take many forms.. short and rude, witty and playful, mournful.. the rather limited tantrum of a child, the embrace of a lover...

Amazing display of technique of good reaction or counter prep! and defend every end being able to control off hand striking from the beginning of the stance. I am self teaching with a katana yet I enjoy euro fencing so I always prepare my stances to counter but I'm a window wiper essentially lol. This is exciting and excellent thank you for the lessons! Standing in my hero stance I salute you with my blade good sir 🤠

I think this concept is a fundamental truth to combat. I unfortunately can only train longsword in my club, but the concept of binding and winding is analog to this one. If I every get to live near Hamburg (fortunately not that improbable) I will definately try to visit or join your club.

Roland, yet another well done video! Thank you for your research and generosity. You do tempt me, though. It would be a dream to have you make a presentation at my club. One day we shall be ready to invite you.

Thank you very much. If you feel left out, you are always welcome to do as the Alaskans did: Hire me and it will be a pleasure to come over. Find all contact info in the video caption. I may actually be in Minnesota at one point next year. Get in touch, so I can keep you posted. We could even arrange for something to happen in your vicinity.

Howdy, I am interested in learning about the usage of the vertical center-grip Norman kite shield, and I have found very little information on that particular style, would you happen to know anything about it or know where I may find information?

I notice that (un)usually in this vid Roland's front foot is opened largely to the outside compared to Cornelius's which is more turned towards the front (especially at 2:00). Looking briefly at older videos this opening of the front foot seems like a new thing (I may be completely wrong since I know your practice only through the reduced prism of your videos). In your previous video, you are apparently trying to incorporate an inquartata-like offensive sidestep, is this to aid this particular step or is there another reason? In my own training, opening of the front foot is mostly used to teach beginners to open their hips correctly and to have them turned towards the opponent but it also helps with some footwork minutiae. I may overthink this... Thanks to the video(s).

We have changed aspects of our footwork. Based on further research, we came to some new insights. Fellow instructors like Dave Rawlings have promoted this kind of stepping for a long time. See source material and read more here: www.patreon.com/posts/i-33-to-in-foot-21497215

Does this movement works with the viking sword? It's possible to bind with a viking sword like you did on this video?
