Installing Windows 11 on the Sony VAIO UX. Is this a good idea? Yes, I want to experience the future of Windows. On a
vintage piece of classic hardware.
Bypassing TPM, CPU, GPU, RAM, Storage and every other restriction to allow the OS to run on unsupported hardware.
What is Windows 11 like on this VAIO? Try running Windows NT 4.0 on a 486 with 4mb of RAM :)

What are you talking about? They've made it very clear what your computer requires to run Windows 11. This isn't just about abandoning old hardware, it's about increasing the standard for device security and performance. It's not a surprise that computers only a few years old might not support Windows 11 as hardware manufacturers have no issues with shipping outdated hardware. Do we want our operating systems to be restrained because they have to support 32-bit for the sake of compatibility?

This kind of device is so cool, i dont understand why they wont make a modern version of it now. Like most of this device is already perfect, except for the outdated components. The mobile market already did a lot of the work for them, with cheap, small high-res displays, better batteries, more ram in smaller form factor, better processors and gpu, etc. This kind of device is definitely not superceeded by smartphones, its often handy to have a legitimate desktop PC capable of running desktop-only programs on hand, and using keyboard is another bonus. PS: if anyone knows of high-quality modern devices like these, please let me know. I'd love this kind of slide-out keyboard on up-to-date device. I think the closest thing we have today is Steam Deck (runs Linux natively, but supports installing Windows), but its kind of more a console than a portable computer (lacks a built-in keyboard, has controler-like inputs)

I have just come across your channel by sheer conicidence and the quality of this video is stunning and it is actually one of the best I've seen so far! The very idea of installing Win11 on this device is beyond rational explanation but I somehow connected on a deeper level - camera, music, cuts, nostalgia and wit - this is EPIC and one of a kind! Keep it up! Wow...

re 0:25 'geez doc; you built a windows 11 PC out of a vaio?' ;) very nice vid. I do like that you managed to bypass all the roadblocks with CMD lines etc - very tricky. If you were going for the FULL visceroul experience on the cd drive; you could have used it to eat lasagne (?) off afterward.. (thinking that was the one.. ie restoring the floppy) Nice to see some old medium spinup tho.. reminicing about old burning days.. that media sure outdated fast ('this space reserved for laserdiscs')

I used to drool over these in my nearest Sony Store. Of course, saving up for a similarly-specced laptop was hard enough at the time, so it was nothing more than pure fantasy. The industrial design and miniaturisation got my mind racing back then, so it's kind of funny in retrospect how some aspects of the internal construction now seem pretty big compared to modern phones and laptops! I also drooled over both gens of Sony Mylo at the time, of which this bears quite the family resemblance to the second-gen. (The first-gen Mylo has more of a family resemblance to products like Rolly and their solid state Walkmen. The PSP Go is pretty much a 2g Mylo shell with different controls!) Though I've never bothered trying to get one when they were at their price nadir, because most if not all of the network features sadly no longer worked by then. Which at least can't be said for a Windows PC like this!

I bought my Vaio UX in 2006, mine was the sexier Japanese version I had imported directly from Japan. It cost a fortune as far as I recall at the time. It was an excellent little machine for running XP, it was by far the most versatile and powerful pocket pc ever, and my eyes were far better back then. I took it with me everywhere and carried a spare battery as its runtime was fairly short. I used it to run music, browsing and even 3ds Max at work as a second pc through an external monitor with mouse and keyboard via the docking station. Yes, it could fling 500,000 poly scenes around with no problems. It really was a gem.

Awesome to hear from an original UX owner. It must have been amazing to have such a hi-tech device directly from Japan.

@@JanusCycle Yep, it was sweet. The Japanese versions had the compact flash slot, and naturally I went for the black version with dock, the extended battery and a Sony memory card. It came with a nice belt pouch too which was very handy when out and about. The price was ridiculous of course, I think I paid over $2500 all told for my UX90 plus accessories. The tech was amazing though. SSD, fingerprint reader, backlit keys, touchscreen, size, ports, expandability. Even mobile tv, though not compatible with US stuff. Many regarded it as an expensive toy, It was anything but. I used it as a very reliable workhorse for a good few years and it went everywhere with me. I used to remote desktop my home and work PC's into it to keep track of what they were doing while out, and to run programs I didn't keep on the little Sony. It was a marvel of engineering at the time and everyone who saw it was gobsmacked. It's funny that you can now get something just as small, with far better specs for about $200 knocked out by some Chinese company, though not nearly as sexy 😄

If you think about it, the 2006 Handheld Sony Vaio was probably the closest thing to a smartphone pre-2007 since 2007 was when the first smartphone (iPhone 2G) was released

Just went through a retrofit of an old EEE 1000H, bringing it up from XP to Win10 and testing speed along the way. Windows 7 runs great, using less than 500MB of RAM at idle. Win10 goes into swap space almost immediately. Needs 3GB to run comfortably and EEE maxes out at 2GB. Sure, everything runs, but slo-o-o-w. Not unexpected on a 1.6GHz 32-bit Atom. SSD barely adds performance. SATA must be bottlenecking it. 2 threads is better than 1, but it's still a computer that's over 10 years old. A friend was into small Vaio's. I just have a huge, full size one. 12 years old. Alive and kicking.
