It's simply impossible to overstate the value of these video casts! From the excellent subject knowledge, to the breadth of material, to the conciseness of the information and the excellent communication skills in the presentations, you are second to none! And to top it off, your humble authorship title of "The Unknown Winecaster" not only illustrates your focus on the subject of wine education itself but provides further support for the trust we have all grown to have in each and every cast! Thank you!!! And please don't stop!!!!!!

Psychology aside, I hate stemless wine glasses with the heat of a 1000 suns. I have some (gifted) and they're great for water, soft drinks, iced tea, and cocktails, but my inner wine snob despises them for wine.

Thanks! It's a powerful idea, but it can be taken too far or obsessed over too much -- so it's always a good move to occasionally drink your brandy from a wine glass, so to speak. Cheers!

While I vastly agree on congruence, I believe that there is one aspect omitted in your analysis: whether or not you need air for the wine you're drinking. Basically, the same choice that governs the type of decanter you use, wide or tight. Asides from champagne glasses (purely congruence), I have 2 types of bulb shaped glasses: 1/ wide so-called Burgundy and 2/ Sommelier style glasses (smaller). I use wider glasses to maximize air contact for wines that are either young (to soften perceived tannins/acidity level) or fresh from the cellar (to drop its temperature quickly). Opposite, I use my smaller glasses for older wine, that should not take too much air (on that logic, I could even use my bulb shaped champagne glasses, but congruence plays against that).

I watched this last week and never commented. I probably have 100+ wine glasses, and I probably gave 25 away. No I don't need them just collected over a lifetime of wine tastings, Christmas, and birthdays.May do a video showing them in future. Great video.

Dang, maybe I shouldn’t have bought expensive glassware! Although I’m glad it was Gabriel Glas Universal glassware since the varietals seems silly haha. And I love my Riedel Stemless Swirlers, so I’m glad you support stemless 😎🙌🏻👍🏻

Cutting the BS! I love your attitude towards making your own opinions and experiences. I mean who has space for 6-7 sets of glasses for every grape variety? I do believe that space of the rim and the shape decides on the amount of aromas that are gathered. That's why I think it's enough to have a set of large Burgundy and a smaller Syrah/Riesling type of glassware. And of course a flute for the Champagne! It should cover most needs!! So what kind of stemware do you own yourself?
@TheUnknownWinecaster
@TheUnknownWinecaster 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks and thanks for asking about the stemware. I have a set of Bordeaux glasses that I use for both reds and whites by Bormioli, and I use them for virtually everything, except sparkling and fortified wines. I also have a couple of sets of Burgundy glasses by Riedel that I use for Burgundies (quel surprise) of either color and for Pinot and Chardonnay, though after doing the research for my cast I'm thinking of using the Riedel Burgundies for everything -- I just had (cover your ears!) a big Washington Cab Sauv in them the other day -- delicious. I also have a couple of Riedel brandy snifters that I use for... wait for it... brandy and for Port, Madeira and Vins Doux Naturels. Finally, I have a set of Riedel Scotch glasses that I use for Scotch (I hope you're seeing a pattern here) and for Sherry. We also have a set of ornate Champagne flutes that I'm not all that happy with, and I don't know who they're by, but that's another story. That's it. Cheers!

Hey, thanks for sharing! That's more than enough if you'd ask me. I am still drinking my whisky from an old fashioned glass...im ashamed...will do something about that very soon 😅 Have you ever looked into the Zalto ones? They are extremely visually gorgeous. But I wouldn't dare touch them. Very less letting guests drink from them!
@TheUnknownWinecaster
@TheUnknownWinecaster 6 жыл бұрын
I think they're gorgeous, too. They strike me as more angular than the Riedels. One of the articles I linked to in the description discusses the findings that angular shapes tend to increase the perception of sourness in a drink (vs. rounded shapes increasing the perception of fruitiness). It would be interesting to see if that effect would hold true between those two glasses. So, if you happen to be looking for a controlled research study to do... there it is. Cheers!

The Unknown Winecaster I’m just starting to venture into the fortified wine world and I’m curious as to why you use a different glass for Sherry and port. I would assume a similar style glass would be appropriate but after watching your cast it seems like it doesn’t matter as much. Lol

Wondet how you see on an issue about alcohol evaporation that could affects wine tasting depends on what kinda glassware you use? Since I read some paper written by some Japanese researchers in which they said the shape of rim seems to make significant change of alcohol evaporation.

Is there any literature that explores whether glass shape impacts the sip volume (amount of wine that enters the mouth per second) and thus the perception of chugging / gulping / sipping?
@TheUnknownWinecaster
@TheUnknownWinecaster Жыл бұрын
Not that I know of, though I've never let the shape of the glass get between me and the amount of gulping that I do. P.S., you have a new subscriber to your channel.
@TheUnknownWinecaster
@TheUnknownWinecaster Жыл бұрын
More seriously, there's definitely a relationship between being able to gulp/chug, etc. and the convergence of the rim -- the old-fashioned divergent rimmed glasses like the one in the video make it nearly impossible to drink quickly without spilling all over yourself; so, fast drinking (at least in polite company) has only been possible since the development of the convergent rim, but one convergent rim glass shouldn't be any different from another when it comes to the volume you can neatly consume per mouthful unless I'm missing something (which is entirely possible).

Isn't it good to make small celebration while enjoying good wine: carefully arranged table, shiny wine glasses etc. Good wine should consumed with respect: the glasses is not neccesery to be very expensive but not cheap ones. And agree, Bordeaux shape wine glasses will be fine for the rest of wines. Cheers!

Without a doubt the use of many wine glasses is over hyped. I use The One wine glasses by Andrea Robinson and they are really nice, also have cheap wine glasses that work just the same but cheaper and not as big. I think champagne flutes are just for show and are not practical. If Im not mistaken, the only thing a champagne does is show off the bubbles.

the weight of the glass (inertia) and wideness of the glass (air contact) might have played a role; brand would probably not be decisive here. Enjoy your glass anyways ;)

Since doing this cast I've started using my Riedel Burgundy glasses as my go-to glasses for everything, and I and my husband are having a great time. Remember, the mind is the most important sensory organ of them all. Cheers!

I am enjoying your casts for a while now and appreciate them a lot. Unfortunately I do not agree with you in this cast. I am a Riedel ambassador for a full disclosure but decided to become one only after fully convinced on the important role of the glasses for the wine. After hosting almost 100 tastings for thousands of people I am certain that the glass has a critical part in the wines taste and smell. So important that the same wine can be tasty or not tasty, depending only on the type of the glass (not the price and quality, but the way it is shaped). Try tasting a fresh Sauvignon blanc from a Sauvignon blanc glass and from a Montrachet Chardonnay glass and you will easily feel the difference. I will be more than happy to help you build another cast about glasses after you will try this small experiment and after you are convinced. Again thank you for your casts and all the best.

guy Haran, Riedel is my favorite stemware at the moment. I have always wanted to have a major tasting to confirm what you are suggesting here. But in my current experience, there isn't a need to own more than a handful of different glassware, Burgundy/Syrah-Riesling/ChampagneFlute as they would cover most needs. I mean, it's clearly a difference between drinking from a coffee mug and a crystal glass. Psychological or whatnot.

I believe you do not need more than 2 types of glasses, in the same way you only need two types of decanter depending if you need air or not. Wide or tight, air or no air, as simple as that.
