Great review. I have a 601A just like the one you reviewed. It’s been an EDC for several years and have had zero problems with it. It looks classy but is inexpensive so I don’t worry about taking it everywhere

Awesome pen! I have a 601A, previous model, and it's one of my favourite pen for sketching and writing.

I have the Schaeffer's conical nibs in 14k on a desk set, which are lovely, so, when it comes to the Wing Sung 601 A, I think I'll content myself with the standard exposed nib. Had that one for almost a year, and, once I stuck the drum at the end of the plunger back on, found it to be a magnificent pen for work. Reliable, nice look, splendid capacity. Worth every penny!

Just a word of caution which I should have mentioned in my earlier comment … the pen comes with an ‘ink converter’ which actually contains silicone grease! So, do not use on any other pen that would take this converter. Also, all written instructions enclosed are in Chinese, but the diagrams regarding filling and cleaning are straightforward enough.

I got my first 601A with a a Triumph-style nib two weeks ago. I got one without ink windows finished in black and stainless steel hardware and cap. It was that retro look nib that sealed the deal. It is my favourite pen and it just works. The nib was a teeny bit rough to my taste, but 5 minutes with a 4-sided nail buffer made it smooth, with a litte feed back. On Rhodia paper, it is a pleasure to write with. It's nicely wet, so whether you write luxuriously or restrainedly, the pen keeps up, with a nib that isn't too stiff, and gives my handwriting a certain clean style. The pen sits in my hand comfortably whether capped or uncapped. And the filling system is a godsend because the bottles of my EDC ink are taller than they are wide. So with its looks, its modest retro design, and and decent build quality for its price, I'm sure I will be buying just the Triumph-styled nibs variations sometime in the future.

Hi, James. Very enjoyable review as always. I have just purchased the 601A in ‘army green’ with a medium nib - really nice with some Diamine Emerald or Elf (Inkvent 50ml … lovely bottle!). Easy fill, great writer using Oxford Optik paper. I would never have known about this pen if I had not seen your earlier review. Thanks, and keep them coming! 👍

Great review! I'm always on the lookout for something different, and I've never had a pen with a tubular nib. The next time I splurge, I might give it a try. I love the Steven Wright quote! He's one of my favorites.

With the Triumph style nib, it looks like if Parker and Sheaffer had a love child. LOL Great looking pen! I'm still trying to get myself to buy a 601, (my focus has been on my Esterbrook pens) and I do like the look of the tubular nib. Thanks for sharing this and God bless, James!

Your comments pushed me to get out my hibernating 601a, which has a cigar shape and a sapphire-like finial on the silver cap, as well as the somewhat classic and Sheaffer-like tubular nib. For a few days, now, I will revel in retro-land. Mine is black, like almost all my fountain pens, so I filled it with Iroshizuku Take-Sumi black. Seems to do the trick... Have a great week.

Ok, you got me. I'll have been one of the people who twisted your arm on this one. Provided people realise these nibs are stiff as a board, they're great reliable writers. In terms of teardown by the way, for a bit of pocket change you can get a cylindrical plastic wrench that fits over the filler button, mates with the nut on the back, and lets you really easily unscrew & remove the plunger on any of the 601 family. Makes cleaning and servicing so much easier. I'd strongly recommend getting one if you don't have any yet. Finally I didn't know the Jinhao 86 exists so thanks for mentioning it. Ordered some of those.

Ohhh...so nice.I have most of the Wing Sung 600 and 3000 series of pens. I still need a 601. If anyone is interested in retro style pens with interesting nibs, there are a lot of new-old stock Wing Sungs and Heros (same company) available and a lot of them are only a few dollars. There are even some reviews up for some of them. Wing Sung closed down in 1999 for awhile so they're from the 90's.

I also gave in to the calls of the Wing Sung 601, the aluminium body and hooded nib version, and swapped the nib cap with a brushed aluminium version to make an aviator version, which gives it an absolutely terrific look! I had a problem with the original nib, which was itchy, had poor flow and, above all, was made of steel that was too soft and fragile (and therefore almost impossible to adjust). I replaced it with a Jinhao 85/911 nib, which is much more pleasant. On the other hand, I still have a problem with the cap: firstly, the finish isn't up to the pen's standards, with the clip not adjusting properly, but more importantly, when I cap the pen, it makes a rusty or badly deburred metal noise that's absolutely unpleasant, and you always get the impression that it's going to scratch the pen (luckily, it doesn't). I'm going to have to find a way of polishing the brake pads in the cap, I think they're the ones that make that annoying noise. Despite these two problems, it's an excellent pen with a finish worthy of the greatest.

That's actually a breather tube that assists in expelling air and getting a complete fill - it's not a pickup. That's why the pen keeps writing after the ink falls below the tube level.

I have a soft spot for the Triumph-style nibs because they remind me of goose quill pens. The WS 601a is good value for money and a way to decide if such a nib is suitable for oneself. There's a Sheaffer Triumph Touchdown (14 K nib, F) desk set permanently living on my desk that I use every day, and it is a wonderful writer. The WS 601a is a poor relative, but still worth a try.

I agree. I got the same burgundy model with the tubular nib and a wave pattern gold nib. But my wife loved it and now it is her's. I bought another with a wave cap, tubular nib and lake blue body for me!

I just received 2 of the “new” 601A’s that have a standard #5 nib. One demonstrator, and one in stainless steel. I am planning on putting a flex nib in the demonstrator. I may have to order a 601A with a tubular nib now though.

Love all 5 601 pens I own. If you want the look of a Parker 51 but at a fraction of the price these are for you!

Thanks for the great review. These are terrific pens, easy to fill and clean too. It could be my iPhone screen, but it seems that the Parker 2021 sequel’s fit and finish isn’t as good as the 601A.

The size of the nib can be replaced by old wingsung 14k nibs or the sheaffer tm/snorkel nib perfectly.

Can you tell weather there is an eyedropper or piston filler I can install a Pilot nib? (Kakuno, Metropolitan)

most of the ws Triumph nib was made in 1990s.But the one in 601 is quite smooth and fine, better than the 14k ws triumph nib

One can never have enough 601's.

The early 601 from early 2018 had poor quality control, though they made a lot of improvements in a few months. If you get one that was made in 2019 and later, you should have a good pen. However, you might encounter older stocks that don't work so well

I'm still waffling on this one. SO many pens still on my want list. I hate to chew it up with a bunch of the less-expensive ones just now when there are a couple of pretty pricey pens I'd really like to add to my collection.

Nice review. I had an older version of the Wing Sung with an aerometric filler. The pen wrote okay, but sometimes when my fingers touched the joint between the screw-in tubular nib and the section, I would get ink over them. Of course, this was about 20 years ago and the quality of these pens have improved tremendously over the years. Did you face such an issue?

I don't know if the 601A improve the '42s SHEAFFER'S "Triumph", but is a ball, imo.

I own the 601a whit gold trim in teal. It looks great and the finish quite nice for the price. Unfortunately I have no luck with Wing Sung (yong Sheng) nibs. My nib in the 601a have lots to much feedback. Even micromash did not bring the solution. So I cant recomand this pen. The much cheaper Jiinhao 85 and the Paili 013 I own are much smoother.

I have never had any success with that nib. Each of them has been scratchy, and unpleasant to write with. Maybe if it came in a medium, I just might give it a try.

This looks like a Parker Sheaffer in one pen.

Looks scratchy. I have too many fine point Chinese, scratchy, that dry out. I have a good medium pt. copy of Sonnet--fairly smooth, quite wet, nice. Only 1 in 10 Chinese are good, if you're lucky. It's idiotic that they make fine instead of medium pts. Medium at least have a chance of being smooth, and perhaps not drying out, but you have to pray about it.

A Sheaffer knockoff or a Parker knockoff or a Montblanc knockoff? To my way of thinking the only thing daring about the pen is the nib. If I had to guess, the pen is some elaborate hoax, containing so many identifiable parts from other marques, but were this the case, the Chinese would have to be devoid of humor.

But even the vintage stuff they started to imitate :-O why not to buy an original 1950s Shaeffer Snorkel made in the USA. Under 100 euros they are already restored .... Instead of buying these sad copies. I have bought 7..8 Snorkel "working" on ebay in various colors. I learned how to change the rubber parts with tutorials on You tube, The spare parts cost about 10 euros for one pen and are sold on Ebay .. and after 10 years that I have restored them they are still perfect. In doing so, you bought a piece of history, not an imitation

The 601A is an unholy rip and remix of Parker and Sheaffer. My only real criticism, however, is the HUGE, ugly "MADE IN CHINA" on the nib itself. I don't want to see that every time I write.

It’s utterly pointless and a waste money collecting pens,having more pens than what you can write with is illogical and impractical , I’m up to 41.
