I've been looking forward to this Wing Sung 601A fountain pen. It is a cross between a Parker 51 and a Sheaffer Triumph. Since it is such a cool merger of two technologies, I thought I'd give it a Star Trek TOS "Nomad" theme from the Star Trek TOS episode "The Changeling". This is a longer video, so please take advantage of the timestamps below to skip various sections of the review.

Pen looks amazing, glad to see that it also writes well. Unfortunately (just talking about price here) my country's version of etsy, only sells this for about $40, $35 being the cheapest. The more "basic" looking one is the one being sold for $20. Some people would say that's a non-issue since it's just a few $... but I live in a country where the minimum wage is $10. Not $10 an hour, but $10 per DAY... so it's a pretty huge leap, at least for me. Unfortunate because I've been eyeing this pen for about 2 years already... maybe I'll take the plunge (no pun intended) early next year.

Great intro, it made me laugh. After trying a lot of pens, the WS 601A has become my work and EDC pen. To me, it's good looking enough to use in a meeting, and sturdy enough to write on crates and other non-paper things. I have three of these so far and I really enjoy them. One thing I've found on all three of my WS601As is that they start leaking from the nib after being used for awhile. On all three, I've taken the nib off, removed the glue residue, then used silicon grease to seal the nib. They don't leak after that.

Hey Trace. Thanks for your comment. I thought I had already responded to this but KZfaq has been playing havoc with my comments section lately. This is excellent information for anyone with the WingSung 601a. I'll have to keep an eye on my wife's 601a. I have an extra nib on the way just in case.

Absolutely brilliant intro!! I loved it!! I am a long time, big time fan of Star Trek, the original. My great uncle worked on the crew. Too bad I wasn’t old enough to go visit him and follow him to work. The pen is really gorgeous, I can see why your wife fell for it. I love the Parker 51s.

Hey, KA Pirk! Star Trek in the family! Awesome! I was nine when Star Trek TOS first aired. It was in late prime-time because ST was an "adult" show. Thanks goodness I had progressive parents and I was allowed to stay up and watch scantily clad, beautiful women in living colour! That image of Dr. McCoy with those two women in feathers has stuck with me for 53 years! The show was educational as well. From Spock I learned words like "alacrity" and "fortuitous". :)

@@InkquiringMinds I had such a crush on Checkov with his Beatles haircut and cute accent! When the show was moved to a later time I was past my bedtime so I would sneak out in the hall way and creep into the room and watch from under the end table. I always love the relationship of the Captain, Spock and the Doc, I'm not a bricklayer, I'm a doctor! As an adult I use to go to Star Trek conventions, that was a hoot!

@@kapirk2244 It is something rare when, after 54 years, a show which lasted only three seasons has such a universal appeal to all ages and genders. It must be something about the basic goodness inherent in how humanity is portrayed. Kudos to Gene Roddenberry.

I freakin' love your videos! So now I have a Wing Sung 601a on order, but I had to get it in black & gold so it wouldn't be too feminine. Ha! I saw where you taught architectural drafting at one time and now your appealing handwriting makes perfect sense. I graduated from engineering school in 1992 and was one of the last classes required to learn mechanical drafting before computers & CAD took over. I learned CAD & have used it my entire career, but the elegance and artform of hand drafting has never left me and it has spilled over into fountain pens now. Thank you again for your videos and all the information that you kindly share (plus the music & cultural references)! Are you sure your middle initial is not "R" for Renaissance?
@InkquiringMinds
@InkquiringMinds 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for your lovely comments, Jeff! No, my middle initial is "J" for Jurassic. I went fully CADD as well using DOS based CADD and then AutoCad and Vectorworks (as well as Sketchup Pro). For the last full season of designs before I retired, I ditched the CADD drawings completely and did all my lighting and scenery designs using a drafting board, scale rule and mechanical pencils. It was fun to practice the "art" of drawing again and show my students what is possible with a pencil and ruler.

LOL...great job on the Star Trek theme! That's a classy looking pen. I can't use hooded or inlaid nibs without getting ink all over my thumb, but they sure do look nice. I'm especially fond of that color combination.

@@InkquiringMinds There are some really interesting little stories throughout the hundred+ years of fountain pens and there isn't that much coverage of it. At least as far as I know. Anything from materials and visual design trends, filling mechanisms all the way to high-level corporate deals. I'm very curious about all that and if you're curious how many other people are, you can make a separate video discussing a historical topic and see how many views it gets. Just a few days ago I got an ebonite eyedropper from India and must say, it looks like it came out of a time machine. Green swirly cap&barrel with stubby black section and you just pour ink right down the barrel. But I can't really find out whether pens like this would've been made in the past. Probably not, as far as I know, Duofold (big red) was the first non-black ebonite pen and it did utilize a filling mechanism.

Doug, love the intro and I know the happy feeling when I too retrieve a package from my letter box that is from China. I do own the standard 601A with the plain cap and green in colour( yes we spell it with a “u” in Australia). I found the nib just as you did and did a fair bit of work to tune it to my satisfaction. I am of the mindset “there is always room for improvement” as I do like to experiment with my pens. To this end I bought a bent calligraphy nib and swapped it. This made a huge improvement and I was glad I did. Bit information for you, if you don’t already know. Wing Sung is the anglicised name and the Chinese characters on the cap when pronounced in Chinese is “yourng shern” which means immortal life. A bit of trivia for you :-)

Properly nerdy ST opening and reference. Kudos! :-) The instructions icon says you must be a Level 4 ghost to use this pen. I have a Nomad on the way, along with a Hero 565. Looks great in burgundy. A bent (Bobby?) nib would make it perfect. Nice close-up of the ST stylus at the end.

Hey, John! Thanks so much. I wondered how many people would get the 23rd century stylus photo! Only a true ST geek! :D I'm not sure that Bobby has those mini-fude bent nibs for the Triumph (Hero) style nibs or not. I'll have to check it out. Of course, that means getting another since I'm down to ZERO Wing Sung 601A's at the moment.

Hi Doug, have you seen the new 2020 601As? The have some fantastic “classic” colours such as blue-green, coco, and army green. After being over-saturated with all the fancy resins out there, I am tempted to buy it just for the colour alone. Just can’t make up my mind which I like best :-)
