I love Jackson Browne. His ability as a lyricist is unmatched. "I'm gonna find myself a girl who can show me what laughter means and we'll fill in the missing colors in each other's paint-by-number dreams" Come on- no one else is writing like that! It's some of the best lines I've ever heard in a song.

I saw Jackson Brown doing a solo acoustiic show and a guy in the audience yelled out..."play a happy song". Jackson stopped and pondered for a second then laughed and said, "I don't think I have any." It was a brilliant show the smiles came from the heart as he played.

That whole album but tell me an album that's not brilliant by Jackson Browne but late for the sky is one of my favorites even more so than for every man which was probably the first album that I ever heard from him lucky enough to see him in concert about four times late for the sky one of my favorites

When I was 17 I thought that Jackson Browne would have the answer to all of life’s questions. Granted, I had no idea what those questions might be but whatever they were I would sure that JB would be able to answer them. I eventually realized that he was dealing with his own and no closer to answering them than he would have been mine. The whole album is a masterpiece.

My brother Sam was a professional modern dancer and died way too young of pancreatic cancer. I never heard this before. This really did hit home for me and I cried all over again. Thank you brother.

what Dylan was to the sixties Jackson was to the 70s.....feb 1974 my little sister my girlfriend and I hitchhiked in an upstate new York blizzard to see linda Ronstadt open for Jackson in a small college gym and it was magical...here's a review from the new York times: 'Jackson browne brought a deeply personal strain of romantic idealism to the folk-pop movement writing visionary love songs and meditations that had dark premonitory undercurrents blending traditional folk harmonies with echoes of cowboy laments and protestant hymns which lent his songs an extra gravity while being brilliantly supported by david lindley on the violin creating some of the most entrancing concerts of the 1970s'.....that truly sums it up....so gad you added this artist to your circle of analysis videos.....marvelous....thanks....

Thank you for the warm remembrances of that show. Unfortunately, by the late 1980s to early 1990s 190s, fickle concert-going crowds and already lumped Jackson into kind of a classic rock vein. I saw him around 1989 or 1990 at a large outdoor venue, with Lindley and El Rayo X as the opening band. El Rayo X put on a great show as usual but the greatest hits type crowd paid him almost no attention whatsoever. The band Jackson was touring with at that time did not specifically include Lindley, but about 45 minutes into the show the rest of Jackson's band left the stage, the Roadies wheeled out a grand piano, Jackson sat down at it and started to play, and then we heard the strains of a violin coming through the PA system and finally Lindley strolled out slowly while playing. they did a half-dozen songs together has duets, piano and violin, piano and guitar, guitar and violin, two guitars, and so on. It was absolutely magical, but the jaded Greatest Hits type crowd had no patience for it. They kept calling out for other songs, and just a few folks here and there stood on top of their chairs and clapped off time and inappropriately considering the quiet nature of the songs being performed. At one point, Jackson said to the crowd, "you all are calling out for some very old songs. I guess this must be the valley that time forgot." this is a good example of why my wife and I prefer to see bands and small clubs or theaters, and generally avoid large festivals. The upcoming Woodstock 50 Festival looks like it's going to be a real mess, judging from the performance lineup. I mean really, Jay-Z performing at Woodstock?

Jackson never resorts to cliches in his lyric writing. Even some of the greatest songwriters will use timeworn phrases occasionally, but whenever Jackson turns a phrase, there is almost always a new spin on it. He says things that have been said a million times in brand-new ways.

@@taragreenetarotastro unfortunately, David has passed, but was incredibly talented. Check out his wikipedia page to get an idea of the staggering list of instruments he had mastered. And please check out David and his band El Rayo Ex on You Tube. You'll be glad you did. Peace.

@@bobfossum7515 , yep, I've seen them doing Duets together several times, actually as a three piece or four piece with Flaco Jimenez and or Joachim Cooder joining in. My wife and I got to see Ry play in a theater last summer. We just found out that he is going to be playing just five shows with Rosanne Cash, covering Johnny Cash songs. I don't know if we'll make it to any of those, I imagine it might be pretty expensive and would require a several hour drive to attend.

No one else like Jackson Brown. Im doing my dance alone as Ive said before. Its horrible. Was with my soulmate for 31 years. She died Jan 3 2019 this year. I cant talk to anyone like her because we knew each other totally. We did everything together..went everywhere together hand in hand for 31 years. Im all alone. I died with her but my body is still twitching. I cant wait to be with her again. This made me cry so much. God I miss my wife. Ive never been alone until now. I met her when I was 18. Life is no longer life. As I say to other I still have everything we had but without her I have nothing.

What you are describing deeply resonates with me--the utter loneliness when your soul mate moves on and you're left to carry on somehow. It's like you can never fully take a breath again. But one of my lovers favorite phrases was "Nothing to it but to do it." So I do. As, it seems, do you.

On a sad note we have lost the king of surf guitar. Mr Dick Dale. He will play to different crowd on a different stage , but guess what his music will be the same. R.I.P Sir. Play it loud play it proud. He was 81

Sadly, Dick Dale had cancer for a number of years and had to go out on the road to earn money in order to pay his medical bills. What a screwed-up country we live in, where musicians, or anyone else for that matter, can go broke just trying to stay alive.

There's a great video of Glenn Frey talking about how he learned to write music by listening to Jackson Browne. It was done by hard work and hammering each part over and over until it's just right.

Bob Seger was another. I remember seeing Glenn on a TV show about 5 years ago and he was a guy in a band, backing up someone, a female, i believe.. He asked Bob for advice about song writing and saying "What if they aren't any good?" Bob replied "They won't be, at first. Find a style you like and stick with it". Worked out ok, i think ;) I think he had an apartment just below Jackson after moving to Ca and would glean tips from him working out a song. Those were great times for music !!

So I'm a little late to the party here, but I'm going to voice my appreciation for both Jackson Browne and your analysis of his music in this video. For as long as I can remember, I've found Jackson Browne such a gifted lyricist and his melodies moving. I even consider his self-titled debut album as a unique coming of age story that should be experienced from beginning to end.

This song is a masterpiece...and very close to my heart. My mother was a dancer/dance instructor, and she died suddenly when I was 4 years old. No other song speaks to me like this one. A perfect performance, IMO. Thanks for your kind and insightful commentary, Fil. Rock!

I so love his voice and every one of his heartfelt songs. This one is especially sad. Thanks for featuring him. When Bruce inducted him into the Rock and Roll Hall he commented that Jackson's audiences were mostly women because he knew so much about love. Being a native Californian I also admire him for living completely off the grid.

Thanks again, Fil! You happened to choose on of my all time favorite songs from "Late For the Sky!" Whether on violin or lap steel, David Linley's soaring counter melodies always enhance Jackson Browne 's songs. When I heard "Doctor, My Eyes," I was a fan for life. Thanks for pointing out the delicate and elegant balance his lyrics, melody and expressive voice he has. Jackson Browne had been one of those, Oh my God, How you read my mind writers! Oh yeah, I remember El Rayo X, I saw them four times back in the 80s, from small clubs to large outdoor stages. It seems I have been a Lindley fan for as far back as I can remember, and I've seen him several times solo acoustic or doing duets with percussionist Wally Ingram. I sure hope he'll come around to New England again sometime soon, I heard he had to cancel some shows because of health problems, tinnitus perhaps. I will share a couple of quotes about him from other people. "All my life, I wanted to be him. Not that I had heard of him when I was a kid, but I have always wanted to be able to do what it is that he does." David Bromberg. And another: "You can come to him with any idea you might have, no matter how weird, and he will know exactly how to embellish it. But God, he's brilliant!" Linda Ronstadt. And my own comment, which is, Jackson Browne without David Lindley is like treacly taffy without salt water.

@@wingsofpegasus , please don't use the orange 👍, it has a very unpleasant connotation politically here in the USA! Suffice to say that that guy would never listen to anyone analyze Jackson Browne songs, but his political posse is happy to steal songs from Jackson and Springsteen and Elton John to use as backdrops for political campaigns, without permission and probably without paying for them to either. Anyway, I was going to say, stick to smily face emoji , but those damn things are kind of orange as well.. ..

K Stewart, stopped into Club Lingerie in LA back in the 80s. Some band was blowing the roof off!!! Looked down on the band from the balcony and there was Lindley with his band, playing lap steel with soaring overdrive, delivering some kind of other-worldly, rockin’ your socks off, soloing!!! I’ve heard him play with Jackson many times, but I’ve never heard him on fire like he was that night! He tore it up!!!

@@davidwollpert5276 , I have stood at the edge of a stage, within touching distance of Lindleys' lap steel, and heard him play Mercury Blues and Brother John through his Dumble amp at volumes unheard of since aboveground nuclear testing was banned. Provably lost some hearing that night but I'd definitely do it all over again!

Great review of this beautiful song. Thanks Fil. I just saw Jackson B. at a concert in Ketchum, ID - August 5th - it was one of the best outdoor concerts I have ever attended. He can still sing very powerfully, and right on the money.

I love Jackson Browne. Have loved him since the 70s. I got to see him in Ottawa about 8 years ago. It was just him and about 17 guitars hanging on a rack, each one serving his purpose for different songs and he had a piano as well, but no other backup and it was magic. He didn't require any fancy effects and yet held us all spellbound. I got to hear Bruce Cockburn the same weekend at the same venue (couldn't choose between those two tickets, so bought both). Jackson was espousing the prowess of Bruce Cockburn's playing and the storytelling was so wonderful. If he ever makes it this way again, I will splurge for as close to the front row as I can get. Thanks for featuring him. Please... do it again... there is such a repertoire to choose from.... and if you do get around to Bruce Cockburn, that would be fabulous too... sorry... don't mean it as bossy... just suggesting. :-) Saying sorry... I'm so Canadian.

Wonderful insight into one of my favorite JB songs. While you are doing 70's singer/songwriters, you might think about Warren Zevon. There's a beautiful version of Carmelita done in 1977 that would be great to hear you react to.

Thanks for this one too.. he'd been on my bucket list for yrs so I finally caught him in 2010..was called the Love is strange tour...outdoor venue..August...Atlanta GA...he came out in this longer sleeve polyester shirt and played a few songs..started commenting on how warm it was and sweating bullets..a fan came up front and set her battery operated fan on his keyboard..he tried n bailed n had to walk off stage to throw on a T-shirt..came back out n said "Well...we know we're not calling this the polyester shirt tour...". 😁

Jackson is considered by many, including myself, to be the finest singer/songwriter of my generation. Very few write with such depth and truth. I consider myself blessed to have lived in this time. Peace

Ive always liked this man and his music. He sounds like America to me. When i hear his voice I think 💭 of my country and how lucky i am to be here. He and only Few make me feel like this is my home e.g. Bob Seeger, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, James Taylor, Crosby stills, and Nash etc etc etc....all the gr8s are going to rock theater in the sky...i will soon be joining them...I’m an old man and I’m tired...I’ve lived a gr8 life...what music I’ve e heard and musicians I’ve seen, I’m sure the music from your country is represented by musicians from where u live...thanks Fil...and u keep going man.

You'll love The Barricades of Heaven by Jackson Browne. Also love the harmony he created with Dan Fogelberg, Don Henley and Crosby, Stils and Nash; just angelic.

For A Dancer is from the Late For The Sky album. That album was Jackson's best. When Bruce Springsteen hosted the induction of Jackson Browne into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he called Late For The Sky album Jackson's masterpiece.

I've always considered Late For The Sky his best work too, certainly his masterpiece. I was one of the few who was slightly disappointed in The Pretender which was very successful. The songs seemed weaker, albeit more commercial but my main problem was the production, which was too over the top compared with his previous three albums.

This is sooo cool Fil! A great singer and songwriter that had such a compelling command of your attention! He is honestly just amazing! His songs bring back again a lot of my yesterday’s when I was a teenager enjoying that special part of your life when music and friends was everything! Doctor My Eyes is my favorite. He was very first concert I went to when I visited my older sister in North Carolina.. Another great artist raised and coming out of the California scene. He was a friend and collaborator with the Eagles.

I was 14 when I first heard the album Late For the Sky. 'For a Dancer' was, and is, one of my favourite Jackson Browne songs -- for all of the reasons you point out. In 2008, my beautiful soul mate was killed when her car hit a tree. For months and months I played 'For a Dancer' over and over again until my body could no longer produce tears. Jackson Browne was my grief counsellor. Also, how grateful I feel to have been a teenager in the 70's -- the amazing singer/songwriters arrived after (and because of) The Beatles at the same time as technology gave the great performers the equipment to record great sounding albums -- and technology gave the listener the equipment to listen. I'm now 60, brain a little effected by too much partying and too much weed (well maybe just a tad too much) -- and I'd change nothing. Well maybe I'd have banned Disco!

I saw Jackson at the Red Rocks amphitheatre in Colorado around the mid 80's, great show. I leaned on Jackson Browne and Cat Stevens to get through some very lonely years at a crossroads in my life. 👍😎🤘

Late to the party but had to respond. I first saw Jackson Browne in in 1973 when he was on tour with Linda Ronstadt. To say it changed my life would not be an exaggeration. Bought an acoustic guitar and never looked back. Still play his songs on piano and guitar.

What a talent,always been one of my favorites.his song list is so incredible.he is one of those songs writers that get mentioned when asking an other great writer,who do you admire as a song writer and they respond Jackson brown'e.that says it all.you also had mentioned that you would like to see a show where all kinds of musicians came just to plug in and do a song of two this is not quit that but look up tv shows from the 70's in concert,the midnight special,Don kershner's rock concert.just about everybody who was anybody from the 70's were on these shows great footage of some great talent

A clever song that snuck under the radar is called Rosie. I listened to it for years without knowing it's about masturbation. I seen him live a few times and he always sings The Load Out last while the roadies are tearing down the gear and all the house lights are up.

So many of the songs you review, you had not been born yet, so you grew up with a huge bank of great music to listen to. Where alot of us watched as this music was first released. It was always hard to say who was your favorite band, there were just so many. Im glad you came along, you help me understand alot of the music I grew up on.
