I saw Randy's last show in Knoxville, Tennessee. The next morning, I was on my way to a freshman college class and heard on the radio that he was killed in the plane crash. I was gobsmacked. I witnessed greatness that night and I will never forget it.

I saw Randy Live in 1982 on The Diary Tour in Detroit. Trust me he sounded like 3 guitars at one time. He was phenomenal and after seeing hundreds of concerts since that day I can whole heartedly say Randy was The Best Guitar virtuoso I have ever seen. He owned the stage with guitar god presence like no other as well. His 2 years with Ozzy was lightning in a bottle. RIP Randy.

When Steve Vai says Randy did things that had NEVER been done before, That tells you something.

Really the greatest part of this performance is Ozzy just marveling at Randy playing...that smile, Millions of fans , yet his greatest fan was Ozzy...you cant buy that shit!

Best part is Ozzy's reaction at the end...you can tell he's still amazed even after hearing Randy play with him for a short while. Honestly though, who wouldn't be? Randy is still one guitarist that can give me chills, even after listening to him for almost 40 years.

It's funny watching Ozzy when he doesn't have a vocal part in this song, he looks like any other fan in the audience, thoroughly enjoying the band. Good stuff.

The thing that amazes me about his solo here is despite playing very fast he is still able to pluck each individual note with a lot of consideration towards intensity, vibrato, and tone. It adds that special bite to the solo that really makes it stand out.

My best friend in the world is Randy Rhoad's half-brother. I had the pleasure of meeting Randy Rhoads on two occasions during his heyday working with Ozzy Osborne. He was staying at my best friend's house with his father for a two week layover from touring. Randy was exhausted and slept for the first two days! Randy was a surprisingly humble, quiet guy in person. Hard to believe when his stage presence is taken into account. It's just awful how Randy left this world.... :-(

What I love about this is if you watch Ozzy during the end solo, he just watches Randy the whole time. And why wouldn't he? I mean, what an excellent front row seat! And the ear to ear smile he has at the end is awesome!

Wow! I mean you could just see everybody is just blown away by Randy and Ozzy is literally scratching his head like what the F is this! Like he still couldn’t believe how good this guy is! I still can’t believe it!

Randy Rhoads was amazing i could just listen to him play all by himself I look forward to all of his solos. So sorry his life was cut so short. I still have the the album “tribute to Randy Rhoads” that i bought as a teenager. Its so cool that Rudy Sarzo helps to have Randys legacy live on. Thank you for sharing this with us

Randy is so good, the tape couldn't catch him, and totally blew Ozzy's mind. Love this footage. Thanks for this break down. Never believed there was anything wrong with it, just could never believe that solo. The ending with the bends always puts tears in my eyes.

I remember when this was first broadcast. I noticed some oddities but at the same time IDGAF. Randy Rhodes was at that time, and still is to this day, the most innovative and tasteful metal guitarist I have ever witnessed in my lifetime. Many will argue with me about that, but will never change my mind.

There are only a handful of guitar players that are very unique, randy was brilliant, and the chemistry between him and ozzy was one of a kind, ozzy's dark madman demeanor with randys classical ability was classic in its self, thx wings, you always show how truly talented an individual is!!

Anybody who talk smack about Randy Rhodes are just upset that there not nearly as good as he is

I saw Randy February 5, 1982 in Lansing MI. Still the loudest concert I have ever seen and one of my favorites. Gives me chills thinking about it today.

Even Ozzy is still looking in amazing how Rhoads is killing it in the end..

Rudy is such a cool guy. I don’t know him personally. But every time I’ve seen any interviews with him. He comes across as a genuine guy. Humble, polite and all around great dude. For Rudy to respond to KZfaq video so that “ We” the little people can solve our question. Great video man!! And YEAH RUDY!!!!

Oh yeah - I saw Randy at a sound check. He sort of walked around with no real intent in his behavior and laid down these effortless and breath-taking runs. You could watch him but he was devious. He'd do things like trills and vibratos and by the time you realized he'd done this, he'd moved on and you missed his technique. Of course, you couldn't go up to him and say, 'Hey, could you do that again?'

Randy uses every single guitar technique so fluidly and perfectly, there’s no doubt that some would think that some parts were dubbed in. He is the pinnacle of metal guitar. Let’s not forget his song writing abilities. He wrote all of these classic riffs. All of these classic solos. All of these classic songs. He understood how to build a song into something people want to listen to. He had a real pop sensibility. Just a natural talent for hearing what a great riff or song sounded like. To me he’s the best. The total package. These songs will be played 100 years from now.

After watching many of Fil"s videos, I'm just blown away with how much information he has to share with us. He really does his homework. Hats off to you. What an intelligent guy.

I love this video, it was on a show called "After Hours" I think, when it was aired on TV. I really love the end when Randy is letting his amp feedback and Tommy is going nuts I always thought it looks like Ozzy's looking around at them thinking how great his "Supergroup" is. These guys were magical together.

Randy is truly one of .. or the only one .. that is in his caliber of playing .. I was born in 67 .. The first time I heard Ozzy his voice was all his own .. Never in my life had I heard such a distinctive voice .. Then Randy started in with his solo and it blew me away .. So much talent .. When KZfaq started up I was more impressed cause when you watch him play .. Randy doesn't look at his left hand to see where it is .. Its all touch .. I know as every one else that his time here was to short .. But Randy will remain as one of or may be the one Rock guitar god of all time .. Wish I had 1/4 th of his talent ... ... ... Rest in peace brother .. And thanks for posting this issue .. I enjoyed it greatly ..

Randys solos were songs within themselves. He had a great melodic attitude toward his music. I get the same satisfied feeling listening to them today as the first time I heard them many years ago.

This is the most epic guitar solo ever. An effortless(for him) masterpiece.

Randy really was on a different level. Saw him also in 82 for Diary of a Madman. He was was awesome. I am so glad I grew up in a family that liked this type of music and took me to concerts as a pre/teenager. Greatest guitarist of my generation, in my opinion. I mean he was teaching guitar at 23/24 years old, I think? I mean wow just wow. R.I.P. Randy miss you loads to this day.

Randy is the sole reason I play guitar , learning all his music has been the battle of my life but now being able to play it somewhat I now need more guitar knowledge to keep getting better and that’s what randy was about but not me at first but now I love learning anything guitar . I can totally understand how transferring the video from VHS to DVD could result in some off-timing between the audio and video. Tape is very difficult because of like you explained Fil, just a bit faster or slower can make it nearly impossible to replicate. Very cool that the Bass player came forward with the answer to our mystery here. And the Marshalls are prop amps possibly, which explains why they appeared to be off. Sleuthing is very cool. Thumbs up!

Hey pegusus, just a FYI, I bought this on beta max tape back in 1983-84 from a little add in the back of Circus magazine. The synchronization your describing happened on that beta max too. So I’m pretty sure the studio basically did not get the Audio tape and video tape matched just like u said. Being a guitar player I noticed those sync issues way back then, so I do not believe it happened transferring to digital if that’s indeed what you were saying. At first I thought he was using an octaver on the triplets part but him not having one on the board cleared that up, yes it’s the keys. Randy was really good at making vibrato sounds with his fretting hand which like u said clears up that issue. I would like to interject one thing. When playing notes high up on the fretboard sometimes the vibrato doesn’t have much affect at all, IMO that’s why on one part of the solo his vibrato was having little to no affect. Wasn’t sure you noticed that. And I agree he was using a different amp out of view hence why we couldn’t see the power lights on. Anyhow, thanks for posting!!!! 👍🏻

I’ve been playing live since the 70s and I’ve had to learn it all the hard way, especially the fact that your reputation especially is judged by your worst mistake! I wasn’t a fan of Ozzy and didn’t know about Randy, but he is really melodic. Like you said previously a great solo is part of the song and you find yourself singing it. It’s seem less with the song. It’s always musical and not a speed test with a click track.

I totally agree. I've always said there is something beautiful about Randy's phrasing that is just amazing. Like Mr. Crowley is absolutely perfect. It flows effortlessly like water. Like Edward Van Halen, they both seem to have perfect solos for all their songs.

I was 13 in '81 when I first heard Randy. Mind was blown. I could play a few chords on an old acoustic guitar. But hearing this, I was pretty sure he was a god.

There’s so much mystery, silence, refusal to admit just how much control and input he (Randy Rhodes) had and what his background for playing was, the level of education, training and raw ability. Randy Rhodes has gotten his due ever since I was able comprehend his impact, prior schooling before BS, Quiet Riot and OZZY catapulted him. Thank you for all you make available. In years to come, I hope he continues to recirculate to new generationsd of astounded fans, gets the recognition he deserves. To say he was groundbreaking doesn’t incapsulate his talent or effort fully.

Definitely one of the great guitar players of all-time. Never stopped learning, always approached it with a fresh attitude, was never afraid of learning a new style or genre of playing, was in love with his instrument and always sought out other teachers on the road to learn something new. That's how you do it kids, along with 10,000+ hours of practice. I still got 9,999 to go, lol. Oh yeah, as far as the off sync thing, that's why among audiophiles the "source material" is so valued and so important. Without that original equipment that made that source tape then you're likely never going to get a 1-for-1 reproduction.

Excellent video as always mate! Cool that Rudy got in touch and solved the mystery for you! The awesome trills that Randy does he picked up from Tony Iommi to try to adapt his style of playing to kind of emulate the Black Sabbath style that Ozzy was used to. Had the great privilege of seeing Randy play in a small 3,000 seat arena (it was the Blizzard of Ozz tour and Motorhead opened but that is a whole other story!) from the 2nd row on Randy's side and I can tell you that his fingers appeared to be doing fretboard magic. In other words, he was doing stuff that when you heard it you would be thinking to yourself how did what his fingers just did result in the sound that just came from his guitar!?!? which I think may account for at least some of what we see in this video. Hope that makes sense! ...lol. Hey and I've got a question for you...is Randy in your top 10? Just curious.

Many of us learned guitar long before there was KZfaq, the internet or anything, we learned songs by playing a record over and over and over and over again. Now guitar teachers are teaching theory how important do you feel learning theory is? Love your show and great analysis of Randy Rhoads.

After hearing this, would love to hear your take on the final 2+ minutes of "Tonight" from the Diary of a Madman album. I've always felt this was some of Randy's finest work, and one of the best lead solos by anyone, either then, or now.

I don't know why _anyone_ would bring the talent of Randy Rhoads into question, ever. He is a proven powerhouse who had an impact on music. If EVER he were in a "pretend to play" situation on television, I would be able to forgive that. I met him in 1981, back when I was 16 years old. I was a stupid, naive fan who said some stupid fan shit. He corrected me, and we actually had a decent conversation. He was an upstanding human being, as good at that as he was with guitar. What he had to say changed my life and how I approach music.

Randy is legend! I feel that he was getting better with every album, it is a shame that we lost him before knowing his full potential.

It's so good of Rudy for explaining it to you. Just shows, you never know who's watching you. He should snap you up, you're better than a lot of famous guitarists. I love your explanations, I have watched many of the videos you have analysed in the past, without the knowledge you have.

Love Randy!! Randy was also lucky to have someone as good honest and Noble as Rudy to add.to his legacy. Every interview I see of Rudy he is of the utmost respect and honestly.

That solo just kills me! LOL! The tone! What???? I’ve always loved that pitch he hits with the feedback! It’s the best ...really. No joke. It’s always really got to me. He used the old dist + mxr. That had sooo much to do with his sound y’all. It has germanium transistors...and they really make a difference. So my theory is Randy was a cross between Jimi and Eddie in a weird but simple way. Did y’all hear that awesome organ harmonizing section. Pretty cool huh?! This was what the British call BRILLIANT! I’m floored. The guy was truly blessed!!!! God bless Ozzy!

RR is the number one reason I picked up a guitar in the first place...nearly 30 years ago. I've drifted away from metal since but I still love listening to him play. It's not just speed. He has this clever way of throwing in those dirty blues notes along with a super classical style. What else can I say? A great guy gone way too soon. I owe RR my life. Guitar got me through some tough spots and I may never have learned without that inspiration. If I had a TARDIS, seeing him live would be top of my list.

I think Randy’s playing is so unique and fundamental to fast metal shredding pickers. So much so I have not enjoyed any metal/shredding since then. He picked all the meat off the bones, I guess guys like malmsteen, Vai, Gilbert have their fans, but my taste with metal ended with Randy

Fil, I'm from Rochester, NY and saw this live on local station. The band actually rehearsed before their world tour here. I was 10 years old and 3 years from even picking up a guitar but already played piano. The Mr. Crowley video was recorded here. Keep up the great reviews from one appreciative guitarist too another :)
