I met Randy Rhoads when I was 16. I was taking drum lessons at a music school and wanted to skip the next week because I had Ozzy tickets. My teacher encouraged me to commit, and I did, even though I wanted to just go see the show that day. I go to my lesson, then run to the bathroom to change so I can head out. I see a petite figure with blond hair standing at the sink, so I thought I'd gone to the wrong bathroom. But as I was exiting, I saw him. "Hey! You're Randy Fucking Rhoads!" I let him know that I would be at his performance that night, and asked him what he was doing at this facility that offers music lessons. He said, "I took a guitar lesson." Being overly excited, I misheard him. "You're teaching guitar lessons? I'd take a guitar lesson from you." He corrected me and said, "No, I'm taking a guitar lesson." This was his cue for me to say one of the most stupid things that I have ever uttered. "Why do YOU need guitar lessons? You're Randy Rhoads!" At this point, he could have become a total jerk. I was a 16-year-old fan, and probably wasn't making the most sense. Instead, he explained to me how he would look at the tour schedule and then call ahead to a music store or school to set up a lesson before a show. "It's a great way to warm up before a performance, and you can always learn something from someone else." This is how he became THE Randy Rhoads. I'm almost 54, and to this day, I will take a lesson at any opportunity I can find. I'll never know it all, or even know too much. That is how he inspired me. As for the video, I don't care if things don't match up. Everyone who has seen him live, or who has heard recordings, knows what he can do.

Randy plays spot on here. There is a hidden keyboard player who doubles some lines with Randy,so that's why people think that that one bend is out of sync etc. The keyboard is just so much louder than the guitar and that "out of sync" guitar bend is actually the keyboard. You actually hear Randys bend underneath the keys.

As a guitar player and video editor/audio syncer it is my opinion that what you point out here is definitely not a live track or else it's partially live with overdubs.. Is this the original broadcast raw footage? or something altered later on? My guess is the latter.. Randy was magical but not literally.

Doesn't look like he's doing anything wrong to me. I think the issue is the blurriness of the video due to its age and having been shot on cheap studio cameras (it was a small station-Blizzard wasn't that popular yet).
@goopah
@goopah 5 жыл бұрын
@AVISIONVIDEO Yep (my guess is it's mostly live with a few overdubs) . Most of my VHS/DVD concert videos are mostly live, but I've noticed quite a bit of dubbing (especially apparent on lead guitar and vocals), all the way back to the earliest shows, and all the way up to current shows. I suppose they simply want it to sound great, so they "patch" a few spots. I actually don't mind the odd fix here and there. But when entire sections are re-done to the point where nothing matches up between what you're seeing and what you're hearing, they've gone too far. This one was actually not too bad. Again, if you look closely to any concert DVD, you'll almost always pick up at least a few of these fixed spots. I've come to accept it, but only to a point. If it gets too blatant to the point where it's actually distracting me, I get very annoyed. If they're doing THAT much re-recording, then I'd far prefer the original show, completely un-fixed and genuine, warts and all. Some of my favorite shows had glaring errors, and I still love them because they are REAL, and have a life and energy that comes across in spite of the goofs. Sometimes, those goofs can add tons of charm.

Super thanks for this one fil , I remember the day Randy died I was eighteen and just learning the guitar broke my heart as he was and still is my favourite metal player and still think he has yet to be beaten ,saved Ozzys life and career possibly an overdub over a live performance as he was a perfectionist and wouldn't let it go out under parr then again it could be just latent audio not syncing up to the film ... fucken fantastic mate 😀😀😀

It's a keyboard guys..and yes it's out of sync...I had a shitty vhs copy of this many years ago..and it was out of sync!! And this was recorded live in a public tv studio in Rochester NY...was never intended for release..as far as the power chord note...i think it was just the position of his hand and the finger he used for the bend ( probably 3rd finger on his left hand unorthodox yes, improbable no..) that gives the illusion of a power chord being played..hope this helps..
@pleasepermitmetospeakohgre1504
@pleasepermitmetospeakohgre1504 6 жыл бұрын
TBoys Rocknroll exactly what I thought too regarding the vibrato, just because Randy held down the power chord 'shape' doesn't mean he played the whole chord, his hand position just naturally fell into that D minor box, I do it all the time. Also regarding the note it wasn't a particularly wide bend as the uploader stated.

Huge brainfart Yeah..glad someone else realizes this..it's kind of hard to explain to people when they start to overanalyze things..and I know because I've done it myself...but in most cases the simplest answer is usually the correct one...now excuse me while I get back to figuring out the opening chord to "A Hard Days Night"..HAHAHAHA!!

TBoys Rocknroll cool, great minds and all that! I remember getting caught up trying to work out 'exactly' how Eric Bell played the main phrase in 'Whisky In The Jar'. I know how to play it in my own way but it baffled me when I watch him play it as it's a series of hammers and complete position shift of hand that didn't seem to fit with the visuals, maybe Fil could analyse that? By the way Hard Day's Night chord is Dm7 add 11, it's not possible to play the whole voicing in that key as it was done in studio with piano overdub too. When they play it live Lennon does an F add 9 shape and Macca plays a D root on the bass.
@wingsofpegasus
@wingsofpegasus 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah the keyboard harmonizing is cool, the vibrato is a wide vibrato which requires a lot of manipulation so the hand couldn't be stationary in a fixed shape. Sometimes you can vibrato the whole chord, but again you'd always see it happening. From the other comments, one guys did a lot of research (!) and it seems like the backing was pre-recorded but Ozzy's vocal was live. But this video is certainly a unique one!

Some thoughts.. This is a copy of a copy of a copy adnausiem of an originally unofficial, VHS circulated performance; from over 35 years ago. It was recorded live at a small budget cable access studio on most likely "primitive " equipment. Based on the above circumstances, It's highly conceivable that glitches may occur between the visual and the audio. Also, the opening of the solo sounds to be doubled with the keyboardist for "dramatic effect". Surely the keyboardist added harmonizers etc. fattening up the line. Anyway, nice analysis and you might wanna take a look at the spelling of Rhoads in the title. Cheers.

I get chills watching and listening to Randy. He was so amazing. With that being said, I do believe this was overdubbed to enhance the sound due to the fact that it's really the closest they have to a professional live video. Which I think is a shame. The Tribute album was overdubbed as well and pieced together from many performances

Huge Rhoads fan here for 30 years now. Anyway...there are a couple things going on here that most don't realize when he plays live. 1. The second solo is doubled by the keyboards up until that first second ends with the "late slide" part. The guitar and keyboards play their own isolated parts after that for the rest of the solo. 2. Randy usually leaves his chorus on for the first part of the solo up until this late slide section as well. All of this is more evident on the Diary tour live recording/bootlegs. Don Aireys keyboards are way up in the mix and a much more pronounced in your face tone than Bridgewaters was during the Blizzard tours.

I agree some overdubbing it going and very precise. I've watched this video 50 times over the years and never really noticed it and chalked up to just video quality of the early 80's. Back then there were probably using some sort of 4 track recorder since this was before any digital recording technology. 4 track recorders were everywhere and everyone wanted one. I am not the expert but use to live that world back then. Thanks again Phil as always!

That's a definite pinkie bend at 6:05, the rest of his fingers aren't on the strings, they're floating. He buckles his entire body to hit that bend but doesn't need to do that for ANY power chord EVER. Pinkie bends are hard because you are off angle behind the neck with ur thumb but you NEED extra pressure on the weaker finger, with no support, so he compensates with his body, cool...Remember the sync is way off.

It could be that the actual track doubles up on the same (or very similar) line to make it fuller and so then live he can obviously only play one of those lines. Just like the keyboard is heard and not present, we are probably hearing the second track while Randy plays the first track for the camera performance. More likely than not it's a pre-recorded audio and Randy is simply playing it as close as possible to the original. Maybe one day the technology will exist that takes what we are seeing and translates and plays back how it would have actually sounded when played for the camera :)

I have now officially watched the original video an excessive amount of times. Here is what I have found. The bass amp is on, as is everything on the keyboards. The drums are mic'ed but some of the cymbals are pretty low in the mix. Randy's left amp is mic'ed and on. You can see the toggle back lit at at 1:27 mark. The right amp is not mic'ed or on but the outputs are hooked up. I believe this is a technique used to feed the soundboard directly. In the first lead break Randy (he and I are on first name basis at this point) does a bend with vibrato with kind of a funky pace to it and then does it again on another string, all looks in sync and imho would be really tough/impossible to overdub to a pre-recorded. The melodic chorus break is more keyboards than guitar but pretty sweet work that it sounds like one instrument. Some of the cymbal crashes at end of second lead break seem to have gone missing. Mix issue on soundboard? Or remixed out? Second lead break seems to have much more sync issues. Overdubs or caused by remastering 30 year old tapes and the having KZfaq change format again? 🤔 My verdict is that it's likely live, zero prerecorded, but multiple format changes, maybe some mix editing and or sloppiness has caused poor sync in spots.
@wingsofpegasus

Yeah a good explanation! Someone said they did 3 takes of this track on the night, so it could be edited from those 3 takes, spliced together as the sound would be exactly the same from the 3. So there could be tiny discrepancies in there!

Keep in mind Phil that some of the digital processors of the time (Alessis, korg, digitec, etc) had processing delays. We used to call it delayed triggering back in the day. You hit or bend a note and there's a millisecond delay, then when you play a fast arpeggio as Randy is doing here, on film it appears dubbed.

wingsofpegasus as with many bands, like Van Halen, he may have had a smaller amp, or a single non Marshall am miced behind them. This was common practice if an individual was given things by a sponsor and then found a sound from another product, such as a processor, being controlled off stage by their tech. Eddie in the mid eighties would have this huge wall of Marshall cabinets behind him but none were on. I used to work an arena that they played here and was backstage when I saw he was only using a few Marshall heads and a huge rack of multi processors. The big wall of Marshall amps is for show and sell.

Nothing weird with this vid. Everything you see is everything you hear. Rhoads does that slide from 17 to 13, the audio and video are in sync there. You're hearing the keyboard that doubled the entire section and covered the one missed guitar note in the slide section. Where it kind of looks like he's playing a bar chord is him playing the last note of that phrase with his fourth finger on the A string. that whole little sec there is slightly out of sync. (and more out in the close up) This vid is totally live. and totally cool.

Yeah l don't really see or hear any mystery in this video. Other then probably the whole thing being slightly out of sync... and very out of sync in the close up part (when he does those trills up the neck). That's just careless video editing. I'm guessing the band saw this video before it was released. I can see Rhoads telling the editor "WTF?That close up is way out of sync man!" and the vid editors' reply, "Hey it's close enough pal! Go do your job and let me do mine!" (that's how people were in the 80s')

Cool job on your vids BTW.. I think thats just because the lights are burnt out because of very heavy use.. Or the amps are just for show.. George Lynch always had Marshalls on stage.. But he was using a Randall combo amp that was on a chair behind the stacks.. Rudy Saro said that Randy always play very loud so he could have a light touch.. I got this on VHS over 10 yrs ago and have watched it over 300 times!.. I notice the things you pointed out the 1st time I saw it 10 yrs ago.. Randy makes a small mistake between 56-57 seconds.. So thats live.. The part where you said he did a vibrato but he went into a chord shape.. I think he did go into the chord shape but only hit the one note with his 3rd finger..Because his whole hand was in that position already...

Part of Randy's unique sound on albums is overdubbing the guitar by recording the same track twice, playing almost exactly the same thing on both tracks, since he used no delay. This sounds to me like two guitar tracks. I might be wrong, but that is my first impression.

Hi Fil this is simple the original video contains the original audio but during the master video they inserted a live track recording of Randy over the original video and during that process its out of sync on a few spots because they could not get it in sync so they figured it would take someone such as yourself or others over 35 years to see the flaw in the video, will chalk this up bad editing

I love how Ozzy is looking around just enjoying everyone's performance LOL. He looks truely amazed at Randy's playing! But as to your topic I run into the same thing when I'm trying to tab a performance to learn a song. Music videos done to the studio tracks are totally useless because almost nothing is in sync. But live performances can be tricky too with sync issues due to multiple camera angles and video editing. I tab a buddy of mine's neoclassical guitar performances (Dean Cascione for example) and even then using VLC to slow things down staying in pitch I still have to consult with him on certain parts I can't quite figure out. Sometimes your eyes defy what your ears are hearing. [EDIT] - I just saw your updated video. Great that Rudy took time to contact you!

Also, my favorite Ozzy tune with Randy is "Tonight" off of Diary. The two solos just give me the chills. The final solo ends the song and is slowly faded away. It goes on forever. Whenever I hear that tune I always crank my volume knob to 11 at the end of the jam to hear Randy just fucking rock. Check it out if you aren't familiar with it. It's incredible.

Simple fil.....its magic.Randy was a seriously skilled musician and probably did things differantly,than most.He was by far to me ozzys best guitarist .I love the fact that thier is a mystery to this ,it kinda makes perfect sense.Considering the subject matter ,and song title afterall.I dont like many guitarists who play speed,thrash,etc ,but occassionally some have a tendency to oh shine through it ,so to speak,and Randy was exceptional.Sadly as with so very many he died way too young.Great video fil...boo

March 19th 1982 was such a sad day for me and for all fans of rock guitar. My older brother had bought him and I tickets for the Rock Super Bowl to see Ozzy play that night. Since my birthday is on the 23rd, It was supposed to be a 16th birthday present for me from my brother to see my favorite guitarist Randy Rhoads. I was really getting serious with my playing around that time because of Randy. The property where the plane crashed was less than 10 miles from our house. We still went to the concert, but I didn’t remember much of it because I was still in total shock about Randy being killed earlier that morning. I know it’s off the subject of the video but I thought I’d share that memory. It was a huge tragic event for me.

It seems to me that the entire audio and video are slightly off. The audio seems to be very slightly behind the video. For the arpeggio parts in Randy’s solo, the keys are playing the harmony part with him, it also sounds like he has a chorus pedal on. Randy set his chorus up to sound very similar to a Leslie type sound. Lots of warble. Used it a lot on his clean passages, especially live.

Randy will always be that incredible guy that really got Ozzy going again. Don't know if he'd have stayed on with Ozzy but he always seemed to be growing and may have reached a situational ceiling within the context of a "hard rock/heavy metal" setting. Hendrix kept growing and eventually started a new band for his new direction, maybe Randy would've decided to do something similar. Too bad we'll never know what Randy's musical changes would've sounded like. Incredible player and from all accounts, a very humble guy.

Yes there is some audio and video synchronicity issues all throughout this whole performmace and that was not un common in live video performances in the those days due to editing issues but this IS 100% LIVE performance it is NOT pre-recorded obviously you can hear Oz voice was not up to par in this performance and if this WAS pre- recorded trust me that Ozzy's voice would have been the 1st track to be "re-done" a la Speak of the Devil live show in Long Beach concert video where Ozzys voice were re-recorded for the Album and concert and even on Tribute but as far as the music is concerned its all live.

It could very well be that the amps are in fact on, but the LED indicator light is burned out. As for certain hand positions not matching up to the audio, it was so quick that it may have appeared that way, but in fact wasn't. Perhaps he was targeting a certain note and opted for something else at the last minute, and that could explain why the bent note high up on the fretboard didn't make a sound. Or, it could have been one of what they call "ghost bends" where the string is pre-bent before picking it so you don't hear the bending effect.

little secret when playing really fast and the faster you go the more relax you have to become , also try whne going across the strings down and up, pick up when starting on each string , i got that from watching steve morse I didnt realize he mostly starts everything and keep up picking which works to ease transitions from changing strings and going from up to down on first note , oh and he also does circular motion while picking and how also I figured the up picking is better is because your wrist doesnt go down naturally when picking it bends up

That's what he told me when I bumped into him in 1981. I actually wrote about it in my blog earlier today, so I'll copy/paste here so you can see it.

I have no clue - he sounds so good , I always wonder why Ozzy sings so clearly, but talks so unclear! Again, I believe it was my 80s generation when the techno and all the overdubs have kicked in, and it has seamed to have progressed. But it really makes a band like Greta Van Fleet shine! I love Ozzy's reaction at the end where he just stood in awe of what was going on! It sounds (to me anyway) totally live. Randy was classically trained so there's no doubt that he had the ability to perform live like this (and then some!). Maybe the edit knocked the audio track out a small amount and with the bass and drums being so solid it wasn't noticeable whereas Randy is absolutely giving it everything so it shows up on his playing??? Wow, interesting points. Legend has it this was live latenight TV from a small station in Rodchester NY. Ozzy actually looks happy. I would suspect that some overdub was done well after the fact as it clearly was not from the released version. I doubt they would bother to play to a tape as it was a small station, late night, but maybe when they put it to DVD, someone did overdubs? It looks to me like in the first break, Randy was switching between trilling with his 3rd and 5th fingers and then pulls a bend with his 4th. All super smooth. Because I suck at 🎸, I find that very impressive. I am also interested to see the insights of others. Randy still amazes more than 30 years after that stupid accident.

wingsofpegasus I would think given that so much of it looks natural (tuning and such) that pre-recorded would be unlikely to sync to. I have written Bob Daisley to ask. He was (as you may know) overdubed out on a remaster by Sharon Osborne to screw him out if royalties. This didn't go down well with fans and subsequent releases were not adulterated. One other request, it might be interesting to one time feature a technique as opposed to a performer. My vote would be 'pinch harmonics'. Tricky to pull off well but masters (Billy Gibbons) make look easy. Hell is an afterlife filled with Nick Jonas attempting pinch harmonics, at least that's what they told me in Sunday school.🤣 Oh the horror.

I think this is part of the remastering of this original video. Originally this was shot for a local TV broadcast in NY if I remember correctly. For many years only bootleg VHS copies of these (4 songs) were passed and traded among fans. Then Ozzy's record label included them with the remastering of Blizzard of Ozz and they did a fantastic job of cleaning up the quality of the video. (I have somewhere on VHS a copy of those old bootleg versions) Now as part of the remastering I don't know if they lost sync on some shots or if they overdubbed some of the parts in to compensate for bad transfer or noise.

Some of the backing tracks were pre-recorded though part of it, like the singing and drums, was LIVE. If Randy was guitar lip-syncing, he did a fairly decent job. The amp question is pretty easy. They are playing in a relatively small room so 2 stacks, even if only one has microphones on it would be murdering everyone in the room. Chances are the actual amp is isolated and they are running an attenuated signal to a cab and a board signal to an amp that is being recorded. Dummy amps, or amps that are just for show are pretty common. I have a Randy head and that thing is loud enough to demolish anything in its path.

Its a synch issue in the original broadcasting, its been an issue on this video since its first airing. It was filmed in Rochester in 81. The solo also has some doubling from the keyboards, which is what your hearing. What your hearing is live and actually played on that stage. The show this was recorded for was a low cost local broadcast, sad that after all these years that no one has ever fixed the synch issues, but there's so little quality video from Randy, us die hardship live with what's available. There is a pro shot video of the Diary tour show sitting in a vault somewhere, but contractual problems only allowed 30 second snippets to be released from the show. Sharon's paws are all over more Randy material being released, because she wants to buy it outright for pennies and share none of the proceeds from the sale. Bob Daisley has recordings from the studio that he can't legally release on his own. Randy's playing inspired the hell out of me when I first heard him. His live playing was phenomenal, and his growth in his playing from Quiet Riot through his Ozzy years was stunning in the short time we had to enjoy him. Its sad that we lost this talent so early into his career, what he was truly capable of we'll never know.

I hate to say it but ozzy's the most blessed front man ever, from iommi from sabbath who is like one of the most creative riff guys ever, then Rhodes a classical genius, then Jake who wrote bark at the moon and ultimate sin. Think about it, then zach wild who shredded alot like dime Darrell Abbott, i love ozzie but its ironic how he landed and met so many great guitar players, hell i am surprised Vaughn didn't end up playing with him..he was like a strange form of magnet that attracted theses great players, with out them he would have been nothing,

hello this footage was taken from film and adapted to video so there would be some uneven footage due to transition from film to digital , when it comes to converting film to digital , digital is always short of frames per view reason being that digital compresses everything shortens film frames per second to less , in other words scenes are left out music and picture frames ask ne film to digital converters , digital cuts out parts of original material shortens actual footage by compressing, this explains randys mising solo parts but rhoads could play it all live and its even better live than film or digita , look at dortmound videos ozzy live and see for your self or listen to some ozzy vinyl it s there too.

Yeah Randy could definitely play it. But they forgot to turn the Marshall amps on for this, the red lights are not on!

Having worked in the Motion Picture Industry as a Lab Tech and sound recording tech, i believe that it is a matter of syncronization of sound and picture--my best guess--(it really is a much more common thing than you might expect, as none but the keenest eye will notice). [Now i will check out your "mystery solved" link now].

I got not all the answer but for the barred chord with vibrato, the note played is with the little finger and he vibrate the first finger wich is on the same string..good tip to make delicious vibrato with a note plaued with the pinky which doean't got the necessary force to do it sometime..

Yeah I think he might be using his 3rd finger for the vibrato.

" they did overdubs for dvd's even back in the 80s" classic line when you consider dvd's did not exist in the 80's and didn't come out until the mid to late 90's it is most likely prerecorded as a lot of music tv shows wanted prerecorded performances hence the famous nirvana RHCP performances on top of the pops

A lot of performance (top of the pops for example) required the bands to do a recorded live performance a few days before the show and then they would mime it live later. If anyone could mime a live recording almost exactly, it would have been Randy.

I think the editing in post production was just a tick behind the audio for randys video part.

As far as I know Randy WAS playing live throughout and while the audio is generally fine, there does seem to be some visual lag which at times puts the image slightly out of sync with the music - most likely due to preservation issues with the original video tape . It was just pure luck that the After Hours performance was filmed at all seeing that there is so little footage of Randy.

There may have been something going on like a run thru (i did play on TV once) and i didn't see his go to MXR Distortion + (on my second one now) but now just happy this got recorded at all. My Fave Ozzy track!!! Wish the 'bridge solo' if you like was there, the one inspired by Parissiene Walkways.

Yes, there was and yes, Live Randy!!! dang, he was great. Just noticed on a re view today he actually had a complete pedal board there, nearly off camera. Silly me :) Probably had the MXR and more there. also it was said Schenker 'dubbed solo's for Strangers....i think its time to let this one go,
