This is exactly what I was thinking. Not only does it give the show a good comedy aspect but it just shows how much balls, heart and determination he had. Willing to give his heart and soul anyday even when he retired, thats how much he loved the game and the Lakers and that makes me respect the hell out of him.

I think this is closer to real Jerry West than anyone wants to admit. Shaq has said he's been called into Jerry's office and cursed out. Said after their first loss in the finals when Shaq was tearing up the bathroom West came into the bathroom when no one else would, grabbed Shaq by the throat pinned him against the wall and lifted him to his tip toes and asked him what the fuck are you doing I went to the finals 7 times before I won you'll get your chance.... if that's not Winning Time Jerry West I don't know what is.

I can see why Jerry would hate this interpretation, and why many of the people who were in that era wouldnt like this show, but I think what they are missing is they are making them human with flaws and complexity. I don't see Jerry West as just an angry man, but a man who wants to win more than fucking anything. This whole show is about people wanting to win at any cost.

The problem with the show is it takes real stories and anecdotes and exaggerates the hell out of them for comedic or dramatic effect. Larry Bird is a cartoon in this show, along with a lot of other characters. It wasn't really like this, but we live in a post-truth world where people want fiction instead of reality

I’m well aware this isn’t the real Jerry West but I interrupted it as a guy that hates himself and is so hard on himself except he says everything out loud and not in his head. It just reminds me of a person that is depressed and never can be happy. It’s played for laughs but if you think about it, it’s sad as hell.

Man, I’m watching this show for the first time now and it’s so great. Every performance is awesome but Jerry West and Magic Johnson are my favorites. It’s not accurate but I like it that way because they aren’t restricted to what they can do.

West's wisdom was probably the most dangerous part about him as a GM. Bring in some of the best talent in the league and all they needed was a push here and a tweak there from one of the best ever in the game. Those small insights and experiences probably moved some of the greatest Laker players ever ahead on the learning curve. He probably did the same with the Warriors too.

This version of Jerry West is the more believable version. Drunk, angry, hostile. Thanks to HBO for staying real. If I hadn’t seen this series I would have thought Jerry West was some quiet, reserved legend of the NBA. A mastermind of the Lakers rise. But this version is more realistic

What makes me think about Winning Time series isn't all around the "it's not realistic" since the series based on a 'novel'. It's the character based on every part of NBA history, using the likeness and realistic part of them mixed with a hollywood spice on it. We know it's not true, but the story always intriguing when you imagined when they're played as a semi-fictional story, right?

This series is based on an autobiography not a novel. Jeff Pearlman interviewed over 300 people who were all connected to the Showtime Lakers of the 80's. The show took its own creative liberties, yes, but many of these events as well as the personalities of the characters are mostly true.

Jerry was competitive to the point of making himself ill. However, he was not a screamer. They got Jerry wrong, they got Red wrong. I don't see how the writers, the director and producers could fabricate so much of this material so wrong.
