The History Guy: History Deserves to Be Remembered

Christmas 1941 was not the first time that Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill had met in person, nor would it be the last. But the meeting over the first holiday season as allies in the largest war in human history was, perhaps, the most consequential, and, quite possibly, the most important Christmas ever at the White House.

Britain actually declared war on Japan before the Americans did. Churchill was told to wait but Churchill does what Churchill does.

Churchill said in his speech to Parliament after news of Pearl Harbor reached London that there was no need to debate whether to support the US in the Pacific (something he had actually pledged to FDR before the attack) since the Japanese High Command had in fact declared war on Britain simultaneously, meaning they needed to act as quickly as possible to protect their own interests. IIRC Singapore and others were already under vicious attack by that time.

Please, we must remember that both Churchill and Roosevelt were humans such as you and I. We were lucky to have them where they were when they were, but remember that they had their flaws and foibles like everybody else. If we turn them into saints, how will we really understand them, or learn what mistakes of theirs we need to avoid?

There's a story where Churchill was staying at the White House whilst on a visit or a book tour. He liked to sleep naked, and one night, he was awoken by something or needed to do something. And in his confusion, stepped outside of his room, giving his American protective guards something that they'd never see in a lifetime of guarding a guest.

Stepping from the tub, a VERY naked Churchill was standing in his bed room, when FDR rolled in without knocking(as was the congenial atmosphere then between them). WC stood there in his splendor and said,"So you see now Mr President, I have nothing to hide." Churchill was a great man and THE man for the hour of need, Britain found itself in. Always wished for a cool uncle like him. But then again, he WAS everyone's uncle Winston. Merry Christmas to all. Thank you History Guy.
