Winter sowing comes with so much excitement, but also is surrounded by so many questions. In my previous winter sowing videos, many of the viewers asked some great questions, gave some great answers, and shared so much wisdom all surrounding winter sowing. I thought it would be helpful to share answers to those questions, and do a little hands on trial and error on camera, as well.
UPDATE TIME: We are also taking a quick peek at the experiment of WS 3 DIFFERENT Ways and the results are super interesting!
Thank you so much for watching, I hope you enjoy and will share your thoughts below.
Have a fantastic day,

I am in Burlington North Carolina! I love your video! I am just starting to experiment with winter sowing. I do all my gardening in 5 gallon buckets and black fabric grow bags, different sizes. I am 75 years old and am not as spry as I used to be when I had a huge garden every year. I got so much inspiration from your video. I have been gathering up my supplies to start planting soon. It is so exciting to try a new way of doing something that I have been doing for my entire life! I don’t have room to put up grow lights and plant in trays. So, I think this is just what I need to be able to keep growing plants that I love. I have lived alone since my hubby died in 2008, and am just trying to survive.

I sure pray that you see this message. I’m in Mebane! Literally 10 minutes away from you. I would love to meet you and help you I have so many extra seeds I would love to give you. My mom used to always garden with me but since moved to Florida and is 85 now. I miss having someone to learn from their experiences and to share in loving gardening. If you are interested, I will show you how to winter sow and love every minute of it.

My tips 1 Place an unbleached coffee filter in bottom of jug to keep bugs out and soil in the container. 2 Any CPAP user has an endless supply of opaque gallon jugs. 3 After risk of frost open jugs and start pinching down to the second set of true leaves to facilitate root development and branching. 4 Place holes in jug before cutting jugs open. 5 Space seeds in jugs giving them room to branch out. My first year my each jug had every seed in the packet. 6 Learn to harvest your own seeds. 7 Keep a log with plant name, sowing dates , results from each jug. This will help decide what plants worked best. 8 When you want to stop transplanting, because this method works so well, give friends plants.

Love the Q&A format and the community sharing comments! I built a square frame from 1x4’s that tightly surrounds a milk jug. I put the jug in the frame bottom up to burn the holes with a thin tip soldering iron I got on sale at Harbor Freight for $3.99. Then I turn the jug over and use the top edge of the frame as a cutting guide for a knife to cut the jug all around to the handle. I use a small filet knife for this.

Thanks, Kim for another great video on this super exciting topic! The sight of those little green sprouts in the containers warms my soul! 😅 As this is my second year, I am gaining confidence in getting more experimental. I have even used some rotisserie chicken containers 😊 this time. One thing I have been puzzling over lately is the sun exposure location of my containers... i am concerned about them building up too much heat in this very warm winter we have been having, especially the hot afternoon sun. I have mine in a sheltered location that gets the 1st 1/2 of the day's sunlight. I love that you have already had some sprouting! ❤

I went and looked inside today and they are looking REALLY nice. Thank you so much for your sweet words and for sharing your thoughts on your WS this year. Food for thought! I did some research and found some lists of varieties to winter sow. Some of them are summer annuals. I’m wondering if these sprout and then a frost comes I have to protect them. I definitely think so! For the past few years, I very carefully transplanted some pre-sprouted perennial flowers into the milk jugs late winter. . I was viability testing the seeds and thought I should try this. I was warned, but have had very good success. Last year though, we had several nights below 25 degrees that I believe killed these sprouts. So my thinking is if the temps drop into the 20s, best to cover them. If extended cold, I think I would move them to a garage or shed. This year I didn’t try this method. My thought is though those annuals should be covered if below freezing and moved if the forecast is in the mid or lower 20s. Please comment or share your experiences winter sowing warm season annuals. I would greatly appreciate it!
@thesoutherndaisyllc
@thesoutherndaisyllc 5 ай бұрын
Hey, thank you so much for sharing and for your question. So I plant warm season annuals and perennials herbs, and flowers. I don’t differentiate between warm season and cool season when I’m winter sowing. A lot of people don’t do it this way, but I have since the very beginning, when I didn’t know better, and honestly have great results. So what I will say, is that when you sow them and the seedlings germinate, then you have a really cold night I would absolutely cover them. If it is multiple nights. (this is an unpopular opinion), but if you feel better about moving them for overnight, and then putting them back out during the day Feel free. My philosophy is I want seedlings by whatever means necessary, so I am willing to deviate from the rule in an effort to be able to have plants at the end of the winter sowing.

@@thesoutherndaisyllc Trudy Davidoff(sp) came up with it and is better explained in her winter sowing group site. But you sprinkle almost the whole or whole packet if its like 24-50 seeds in your jug. Then the whole jugs is filled with tiny seedlings. Then you cut them with a knife in like 1 to 2 inch squares brownie style and plant the whole hunk. The fittest will survive. I am sure I left our something. It is good for things that don’t like their roots disturbed .Those who plant their seedlings directly out into the garden usually use the HOS or "Hunk 'O Seedlings" method. With this method, do not prick out tiny individual seedlings to transplant into the garden. Instead, transplant large clumps of seedlings as a group.

Great video! So happy you got the soldering iron!! I prep like 24 milk jugs at a time by using my outside outlet on my house in the fall. That way when it's time to plant in them their all ready to go and the iron makes it so much easier. Don't forget to put the little stand on it though so you can sit it on your bench in your green house and you won't have to worry about it burning a hole in your wood. Winter sowing is all about trial and error. And the most important thing is that our success mainly relys on our weather and we can't control that. If no rain then the jugs dry out so we have to make sure their keeps moist. And then to much rain the jugs get waterlogged. I love the challenge especially when seeds germinate. And your so right. If they don't then try again next year.

Hi Nora, YES! It was actually a wood burning tool but worked AMAZING! I am heading outside shortly today to burn some holes and prep my containers for my winter sowing kickoff to this season. So exciting, thank you so so much! I love your attitude! We absolutely cannot control the weather and I like to think that the weather has been working just fine without us controlling it :-) We have to try what we know and adapt to the changes to growing. I personally love warm weather so I don't mind the warmth but also understand the importance of the cold season in my zone. Thanks for watching and for your thoughts. I appreciate it as always!

I had pretty good success last year, when we had a much warmer winter and very dry (for us). With a more normal rain pattern this year, some of my seedlings have really taken off. I don't see any night time temps in the 20s in the long range forecast, so I'm probably going to go ahead and plant out Bachelor's Buttons and poppies. I had planted some in the fall which would normally come through the winter with no problem, but that sudden and severe freeze in December even killed my foxgloves! I started another batch of seeds last week and will start some warm weather seeds in early March (zinnias, cosmos). I'm sticking to the milk and tea jugs since they are free and at hand! BTW, I was born and raised in the south, and I have always preferred my tea with no sugar at all.

That is uncommon as I am sure you know :-) I have acquired a taste for it now and honestly think I prefer it....well that may be taking it a little too far :-D

This winter is strange and I’ve never experienced this in my life. We’ve had pouring rain and 40-50s most of January and February the same. Only a few days here and there that were normal cold. I started last year’s WS February 27th all was good. I’m still waiting and hope to start on the 20th as I’ve looked at several weather forecasts and hoping temps stay colder. Today we had some rain and we have had 40s. I’m going to still set containers so they are definitely shaded from hottest sun. I’m concerned about seeds rotting and germinating as the night temps are not getting below freezing. We will get snow Thursday, but back to heat for several days this weekend, then cold again. I have a small GH I could heat, but prefer to be closer to April. Read articles on this weather and it’s very concerning. So many have had containers germinate in the east and weather websites say their spring is 3 weeks early. Z5a, WI.

I agree with you on the strange front. I can remember mild days for a long time and especially as I look back in my garden journal. The temps always are all over the place and that is always interesting for us gardeners. Keeps life interesting I guess. My best advice would be if any of your containers do germinate and you have a hard freeze just maybe protect them for the evening with a blanket. They should be fine.

@@thesoutherndaisyllc thank you for advice, but in WI I doubt a blanket would do. We will have a cold day and 3 days of warmth and the rest of the week in the teens. Hopefully it stays cold and I can finish WS. The few I’ve done are in shade.

@@dustyflats3832 my winter sowing worked just fine and we had days last year mid feb in the 60s then night time lows in the 30s. They had germinated early and my results were great. You have to do what you feel is best. You could maybe try a container or two that you leave out and don’t worry about at all. See what happens with just watering as needed but otherwise leaving alone. I imagine this new way of temps is our new normal so I’m trying to learn how to adapt and adjust lol. Best wishes on your WS. I’m sure it is going to be spectacular 😉

@@thesoutherndaisyllc yes, this weather probably will be new normal. In warmer regions like yours the cold hours at night are probably just before the sun rises and that can happen here also, and that wouldn’t be a problem. They are saying steady temps in mid teens at night and that would be too cold. I did find a couple other websites that talk about unusually warm winters and advise to wait till later part of February and/or shade for now. Yes, I did a couple with seed I collected and set in shade. I heard a spring bird couple days ago so spring isn’t too far off unless the wildlife is fooled. Thanks again.

@@dustyflats3832 just something to consider, each layer of protection gives you a zone. So starting seeds in a jug, in an unheated greenhouse gives you +2 on your growing zone. You could even sow in jugs, put the jug on a tote lid in the unheated greenhouse and put the tote over the jugs during your cold snaps.

The seeds won't germinate until its warm enough though correct? I sowed about 20 milk jugs for my first winter sowing attempt and will be adding more. Our last frost is mid-May and we still have snow on the ground but I'm of the understanding that seeds won't germinate until they are ready and it's warm enough. I'm zone 6a.

Not sure what state your in, but I’m keeping mine out of direct sun and will do most by the 20th as it’s been too warm here Z5a, WI. I don’t want to lose the seed to rot or early germination because it can happen. If it does happen too early I have a small GH I don’t normally heat too early that I could throw them inside. The containers are mini green houses or propagators and the seeds very well could germinate too soon with this extremely hot weather. What I’m concentrating on in future forecasts is how many hours it will remain warm, will it get to freezing at night and how much sun. For me it’s important that soil remains cold and better yet frozen until it gets closer to spring (frost date May 13th). Pray for us all is right as this weather is concerning for not only all the plants, but the insects and animals as well.

Hi, let me see if I can help to ease your mind a little. The very best part of winter sowing is seeing what works and what doesn't. Your seeds will not germinate until they are supposed to meaning the soil temperature and moisture is where it is the right conditions for germination. So if by chance your seeds do germinate, that will be ok. If your temps get cold that is ok because you container is like a greenhouse so it will be warmer inside. If it is a hard freeze and you are concerned just cover them with a blanket for the night but don't forget to uncover them. Sometimes seeds don't germinate at all like my milkweed. I am not sure why but I will try again and see what happens this year. This is your first try and I know how this feels. This is my second time and I am trying so many seeds I have never grown and some I've never even heard of before this community shared them with me. So just try to remember that you will have success and you will have failure and both are ok. You may have some germinate early and they will be ok. You have snow on the ground and you can take that snow and pack it around your containers and sprinkle some inside too. Snow is a great insulator and will keep it cold like a freezer :-) You're going to do great and I can't wait to hear all about it!

Are your containers on the sun? If not out then in the sun. Also are you overwatering them?

You would wet the soil not too wet then sow your seeds then spray lightly, close it up and then watch to make sure it doesn't dry out and spray with a mist (water bottle) if it is dry but don't open it up. I did a video on the steps and how to do it. Check out my playlist that is winter sowing. I hope that helps you.

No, not at all. As a matter of fact, I just posted a video day before yesterday on how I get them out of the containers. Check that out and if you have any more questions, let me know.
