Aftermorning, Drum Nerds. Today we look at a much requested WINTERSUN - Sons Of Winter And Stars (DRUM REACTION). It's a bit of a mission as this is a long video, a journey if you will but my gosh was it worth it! I am so thankful of all of you for suggesting this Kai, Wintersun, Nightwish rabbit hole.
I had no idea what to expect from the drum parts, guitar licks and vocals; it got intense!

I strongly recommend that you start to use headphones, so that we can hear the original track while you are reacting. Jari Mäenpää is the songwriter and vocalist. Amazing guitarist as well, but he stopped playing pretty recently, and only focus on vocals. He is the one that got me into this type of vocals. I like how much emotions he puts on those. I had already listened this type of vocals from the late 90's, but never got into them, just learnt to filter them and listen to amazing music. But Jari showed me, that it is much more than just screaming.

Thank you for the kind and helpful words. I was thinking of headphones but it would then not make any sound on the computer to record. It sounds like this style of singing is absolutely just unreal! He has so much emotion in his voice. You've had lessons from the man himself :O How amazing is that!? Again, I'm more of a drum nerd (lover) but can absolutely appreciate the unreal talent he, all of them have. Be well and thanks again.

@@DRUMNERD oh, it probably came out in wrong way, because I can't sing, and if possible, scream even less. I meant that hearing Jari's vocals got me liking this stuff. But I would have loved to take guitar lessons from him, or Teemu, the lead guitarist. They are absolutely amazing.

@@DRUMNERD not sure what software you use to record or what your set up is, but look into OBS. It will let you record the content audio along with the video from within the software, in addition to your in person audio. Let’s you separate and mix different audio channels for the recording.

Jari is versatile with his voice and he kinda pushes his emotions into his vocals. That's what it feels like. It pierces my heart!

Jari Mäenpää has a metal voice like few others. And for the drumming, this band is Kai Hahto's therapy band, for all the sick drum parts he can't use with Nightwish. And don't get me wrong, Mr. Hahto has said in an interview that the slow and delicate parts with Nightwish are among the more difficult area of his vast repertoire.

Matt, thanks for the info. I hadn't been aware that he viewed them both separately in that way. It makes sense though as he is likely bursting with all these fantastic licks and chops but can't just throw them in needlessly with Nightwish who don't serve that. I can absolutely agree with him that the softer and slower, more delicate parts can be some of the hardest parts to pull off. It takes such thought and care. @@DRUMNERD If you ever react to The Poet and the Pendulum by Nightwish, you'll see Kai playing the the simplest syncopated beat with eyes closed and an expression of utter concentration on his face. (Note: no going to this magnum opus by Nightwish without research to the backstory).

Sorry I missed the live stream I got stuck in traffic. Don't sweat the sound on this one its your input on Kai I was looking for. Wintersun are an amazing band by the way. Great reaction. After this one its time for a Viking raid! Re the direction of the channel. Its your channel go the way you want.

May I suggest a Nightwish song? It is not a drum cam but you can clearly see what Kai brought to the band after Jukka. Buenos Aires-live: "The Devil and The Deep Dark Ocean". Just for fun!

I looked into things and thing since changing the focus on the system from the video instead of audio that may have effected it. I am annoyed at how it turned out, sorry for the poor sound. Doing my best to fix it for the next ones. Be well.

For me the drummers that makes me want to learn to play are Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree, King Crimson, OSI & The Pineapple Thief) and Paulina Villareal of The Warning. Gavin for his musicality and Paulina for her energy and how much fun she makes drumming look.

Hi. Did you notice that this is the same song you've reacted to in the two parts? So this was not your first Wintersun 😄 If you want to see a Nightwish performance, with some nice drumming by Kai, have a look at 'Weak Fantasy'. You'll also witness some crazy vocals there. Marko (on bass in this video) stepped back from Nightwish last January. He had some issues to deal with. Maybe he'll be back. Yeah Martine, I think with over excitement and joy I got lost and overwhelmed :P I will absolutely check out this video you've sent however and take a look at making it a reaction video. I think I'll be doing some Rush and Jazz Big Band reactions as well. I know this is a far shift but I hope you and the others will value that as well :) Thanks for all the support and helping me out. Ha, thanks for the suggestion and Finnish joke. I have tried headphones and speakers and still nothing seems to work. For the latest video I lowered the threshold to avoid any clipping but as for the bass response that may be something that comes with better gear. I am grateful for your help and support. @@DRUMNERD But you had a terrible echo going on for awhile. And of course the frequence range was bad so much was missing. You can see this drumcam offline: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Zp6Pg8emuLGyh4k.html Look what he does at 2:22, that part is very difficult to hear in the Sonic pump version. Anyway, in that drumcam you hear and see everything, but don't try it yourself, it will kill you :-) Try a headset and record the sound directly from the video and mix in the mic.

Loved these Wintersun drum reactions \m/ I strongly suggest for you to check Heikki Saari's take on this same song.... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ibh7ecWgmLfLqpc.html Can you spot the differences? As for me totally im-capable of drumming, I think Heikki does pretty damn good job.

As much as I love this song and drums in general. The way the music is recorded I can barely hear Kai. Losing a lot of what he's doing.

Yeah Makai, I’ve since been able to record better by using my headphones and a mic so the quality of videos I do has improved. He’s a beast on the kit and I’ll be doing more on him soon. Hope you’re well.

Sorry John, as the channel is Drum Nerd and not tech nerd - I don't feel I failed. Finding my feet still with the sound for reactions, making covers and lessons on the kit as that's the primary focus of this channel. But thanks for stopping by, be well.

Sorry but I can't watch this. I know that Kai is kicking hell of his double base drums but I can't hear them! This is a drum channel for viewers who don't want to hear drums? Odd!
