This adorable, little ring only takes, LITERALLY, two segments of wire and a little cabochon. And, you'll only need four basic tools to do the job!
What are we waiting for? Let's get started!
Materials You'll Need:
(x1) Segment of 18 Gauge Dead-Soft Wire *See Note
(x1) 3" Segments of 21 Gauge 1/2 Round Dead-Soft Wire
(x1) 4mm Cabochon (You might be able to use 3mm or 5mm also).
Tools You'll Need:
Chain Nose
Flush Cutters
Ruler
Ring Mandrel
............................................................
Notes:
* To measure the right amount of 18 gauge wire you'll need, measure the circumference of the ring mandrel at the desired size and add 2" to that measurement.

Hi Elizabeth, if I dont have a cabochon, can I use a small bead instead?
@ellieshandcrafted
@ellieshandcrafted Жыл бұрын
I don't think a bead will work with this exact design.. I have made a ring version before where you make a jump ring of sorts and then put the ends of the jump ring in the bead. From there you can wrap wire around the bead to secure it. So, depending on the size of the bead, you might be able to do it that way. Hope that helps!

Nice tutorial! I am just getting started and only have a few supplies. While I’m sure you are not still looking at comments so long after your initial post… for the “nest” piece, if I only have 24g half round wire, but have 21g square wire, which do you think I should go with for my first attempt at making this? Even if OP cannot answer, I’d appreciate a suggestion from anyone that has more experience than myself. Will the 24g half round be sturdy enough? Will the 21g square be too bulky?
@ellieshandcrafted
@ellieshandcrafted 8 ай бұрын
I would definitely use the 24g half round instead of the square wire. Just make sure that the amount you wrap around the band wires is the same width as your stone. In this case, my stone was 4mm. I hope that helps!
@IslandWrap-qq3ov
@IslandWrap-qq3ov 8 ай бұрын
Gotcha. So it’ll probably take a couple (few?) more wraps around to match the size of the stone too (mine is also 4mm). Haven’t tried yet (have just a couple more simpler pieces to try first). Will see how it goes. Thanks again.

Hello. I am an absolute beginner when it comes to wire wrapping. Do you have a project that you could recommend for one such as me?? Please and thank you in advance b
@ellieshandcrafted
@ellieshandcrafted Жыл бұрын
I suppose it depends more on which you are wanting to learn: wire wrapping or wire weaving. For wire wrapping, you could try this video I did for some herringbone earrings: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gc2Hp9GT152ydZ8.html. The earrings are fairly easy to start with and use beads instead of cabochons, so you don't have to worry about setting the stone. You can also try looking at Kelly Jones Jewellery. She has a lot of beginner friendly tutorials as well as Back to Earth Creations and CSL Jewelry Designs. I hope that helps!

I really dislike the ring mandrel I purchased in the beginning of me not knowing what I was doing it has gaps that indents to show the size numbers so I don't ever get a perfect circle it's has a flat spot. I need to upgrade mine. 😅

LOL. That sounds a lot like my first ring mandrel! It made a huge difference when I finally purchased my steel mandrel. And they’re not too expensive now. :)

Elie can I ask what you would charge for this ring?
@ellieshandcrafted

I have priced them between $15 - $25 in the past, but it depends on the price of stone you're using and if you'd like to include shipping or are selling in person. Hope that helps! :)

Where do you find your cabochons ? I don't think I have ever seen them that small. The smallest I have seen is 8mm. I love your designs. They are very well made and it looks like I might be able to do this. Fingers crossed ! 😉😊😍

I cannot imagine that this would work with my 18 gauge wire. 18 gauge is 1 mm diameter wire, isn't it? My 18 gauge wire seems to be much softer and more flexible than yours. I use copper. Do you use any other metal? Could that be the problem? If i were to make a ring with my wire, it would be completely bend in no time.
@ellieshandcrafted
@ellieshandcrafted Жыл бұрын
I used copper as well. Sometimes I like to "work-harden" my wire before using it by running it through my nylon pliers a few times or hammering on the mandrel with a rubber/nylon mallet once I completed the ring. You can also use half-hard wire instead of dead-soft wire to help make it sturdier as well. I hope that helps!
