One of the most commonly asked questions I get from students and subscribers is, "What kind of jewelry wire should I use for wire wrapping?"
If you're new to making wire wrapped jewelry, the choices out there can be overwhelming - there are SO many different types of jewelry wire that you can buy, and without knowing what many of the options mean, it's very easy to buy the wrong thing.
This video will help you understand the type of wire you need! We are going to cover:
- jewelry wire gauge sizes
- jewelry wire materials
- jewelry wire temper (wire hardness)
- jewelry wire shape
If you've tried wire wrapping before but the wire doesn't seem to be doing what you want it to, this video is for you! Using the wrong type of wire can certainly cause a lot of frustrations, and might be the problem if you're having an issue with any of these:
- wire is too soft, won't hold its shape, finished pieces get squashed and misshapen easily
- wire is very stiff, difficult to form into the shapes you want
- wire breaks easily

Perfect 👍 thanks for sharing your information. I just invested in a tumbler and the jewelry tools and the wire and metal for my jewelry. I chose a lot that includes 925 silver and, gold plated 925 I am super excited to get started. Thanks this was very useful and informative for a beginner like myself.

Hi I'm interested in starting wire wrapping and this was an excellent video for me. But I have this question: isn't copper a conductor? Is there a chance you'll get an electrical shock if ever for example I plug in something with my hands wet or something. I know it sounds stupid but it's been bothering me hehe thanks!

Thank you for this video, this was very helpful! :) I have one question.. I still have some thin craft wire, wich turned out to be not useful for wire wrapping. Are there any other techniques in jewelry making where I can use them or are they just to soft? I practiced a bit and wrapped it around and through a big bead and it looked quite nice. I tugged the ends inside the bead before sliding the bead on a headpin. But I don't know, will it hold? What are your experiences on using craft wire in jewelry making?

Quntah888 Sure, there are definitely some uses for craft wire in jewelry making, and the way you used it on your bead should be fine. The main issue is when the craft wire has to support itself because it's not strong enough to hold its shape, which it would in a wrapped loop. But when you wrap it around something else, like a bead or stone, as long as the wire is supported, it's not really as much of a problem! You can also use it to coil around another larger piece of wire, as long as that base piece of wire (structure wire) is a sturdier temper like half hard. Soft wire is easier to work with and easy to move into place, but the question is, once it's there will it stay? As long as it's supported by something then yes, it will. I personally don't use craft wire much because another problem with soft wire is that it takes marks from the tools easily, and that drives me crazy! Thanks so much for your question. +Quntah888 And actually, something else you might try. Soft wire can usually be hardened up a bit in a few different ways (called 'work hardening'). For example, pulling the wire through a pair of nylon jawed pliers several times can stiffen it up a bit. (more info on work hardening here: jewelrytutorialhq.com/work-harden-jewelry-wire/) Just something to keep in mind though - some metals can become very brittle, meaning they will become weaker and break easily with too much work hardening. I have never tried work hardening craft wire so I don't know how it responds, but it's worth a try!
