I watched many videos on wiring-up a fridge/AC compressor and by far this was the ONLY video that I understood clearly and was was able to complete my DIY silent compressor project. We need more people teaching like this guy.

Great information... I remember back when I was a kid in the late 60's my dad would use fridge compressors in his farm shop to inflate tractor tires. He couldn't afford an actual air compressor but came across old fridges occasionally and would salvage the compressors for this purpose. For a large tire I recall that it took a while to blow it up, but eventually they would get the job done. He liked to mount them on an old push-mower deck... made them easy to move to where ever you needed it. He never put any more oil in one... when one would quit working he'd just find another one to replace it.

I just purchased a new window ac unit to replace my old loud window ac. My old ac unit works good, it is just old and LOUD!!! I have an old empty BBQ propane tank that I will flush out and with a few Harbor Freight pieces I believe I too can build myself a small shop air compressor. Thank you so much for this video, I have learned a lot and feel confident I can build this. Now if I can get my BBQ tank cleaned out without blowing myself up, I will be in good shape,,,,,, It sucks to wake up dead!

from the plug: common is normally black (called a common, line, or hot) which carries 120v. the neutral is normally white (called a neutral or enclosed ground). the ground... ur right, it's a ground or rod ground. terminology is key for newbies (especially when they're watching another person's video). always use a tank and always use a switched pressure regulator at LEAST. It's a cheap way to avoid major hazards.

thank you for the video.my little 3 gal. compressor pump died, it has only a 100psi switch. I could not figure out the wiring of the dehumidifier compressor pump out. thanks to this video, I can now wire up a new pump for my little tank. plus for the switch before the capacitor I will tie it into the 100psi switch. this video fixed my little compressor for super cheap $. I had the dead dehumidifier, the pump worked but no more cold. and now it will be pumping my Little 3 gal tank thank you very much... GREAT VIDEO THUMBS UP!!!

Good vid. Liked. those Rotary Compressors will Do as much as 400 Psig, but they won't last long doing it. they can run up to 275psig all day long, but that is with suction subcooling coming back as refrigerant enters the compressor. they need cool air entering the compressor to make it survive. no warmer than 55 degree's. it keeps the compressor electrical wiring inside the compressor from melting. so if you're in a Basement and it's relatively cool 65 degree's or less that'l keep it working. You could use it to Pressurize a 30 lb Steel Refrigerant Recovery Tank to 150Psig all day long and that would make a great little air Tank for blowing off parts.

Hi their, we have a single phase Compressor, same principle, except we also have a run capacitor, which is wired form the Live 240 volts to the junction between the start winding in side and centrifugal switch...we have a centrifugal switch in the start circuit to turn the start winding off when it gets up to speed...about 2 seconds or less...Fred UK

I wonder how much pressure that thing can charge up to? I suppose you can use a flare tool or solder the copper pipe to a fitting. Also, the intake tube is directly connected to the compressor housing; thus, you can pour a set amount of oil into a cup, dip that intake tube into the oil, turn the unit on to get more oil into the system. The pinched tube can be cut to drain old oil.

I built one using a gas grill bottle for the tank. I used a pressure switch with an unloader set to kick off at 150 psi. Mine used a potential relay to start the motor. No capacitor. Those things tend to spit alot of oil though with no good way to check the level.

By the sound of your ohm meter, your switch must be in the continuity / diode mode. If this is the case, you are not measuring ohms, you are measuring the voltage across the resistance in circuit. This is used to see the voltage bias of a diode.

Great video, thanks for taking the time to do it. I want to use a fridge compressor to supplement the aeration of my pond. My question is, to keep the compressor lubricated, I'll add oil but obviously I don't want it to go into the pond. What if I extend the pressure side to a height of about 4 or 5 foot straight up, do you think that would help keep the oil in the compressor rather than being pumped into the pond? Thanks in advance.

Add an oil separator in line. The oil is vaporized by the compressor, so it comes out as mist.

+joe b Yes, it is an on/off switch for the compressor. The "run capacitor" (metal can) is designed to stay in the circuit while the compressor runs.
