Part 2, Mounting and Wiring this awesome off-grid inverter!
This is a heavy, transformer based inverter made for off grid and on grid both. This makes it a hybrid inverter. The Schneider XW PRO 6848 is battery based for any nominal 48V battery including lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4).
PDP stands for Power Distribution Panel. Schneider makes two models of the PDP for the XW PRO inverter. There is a small, and large PDP. Both come with one 250A circuit breaker as a battery disconnect, and some AC circuit breakers. Both have a means to connect the single 250A breaker to one inverter.
The small PDP is made for one inverter only. It takes up less room, and costs a little less than the full size. As of this video, it is about $650 which makes it a real bargain if you know for certain you only need one inverter. This mounts under the inverter.
The large PDP takes up a little more room than the small PDP. It mounts next to the inverter, and comes with a wire-way that mounts under the inverter. The large PDP can accommodate up to 3 inverters allowing you to expand your system over time. As of this video, it costs about $1,200. It's only worth it if you know you will want more than one inverter (now or in the future).

You chose wisely. I've sold and serviced the SW and XW series of inverters since the days of Trace Engineering in Everett, Washington back in the late 90s. Nothing could beat these heavy duty, low frequency, transformer based inverters back then and nothing beats them now. Especially the short lived, Chinese and U.S. made, low surge, high frequency, transformerless inverters/solar generators that have now flooded the market. High frequency inverter tech is ok for low power, non-inductance loads like laptops, small fans, small heaters, charging cell phones or battery powered tools or heat guns, but powering high inductance loads like full sized refrigerators, large power tools, portable AC units or large microwave ovens is absolutely not what they were designed for and they can be downright dangerous when used with high inductance loads. The reason for this is that all these high frequency inverters lack a very critical component. That critical component is an iron core, copper wound output transformer. Without an output transformer to act as a buffer to absorb electrical surges provided by the “Flywheel Effect” inherent in the physical amount of a transformer’s iron, these surges and damaging reverse voltage spikes must be handled directly by the inverter’s MOSFET switches, essential shortening their life. You might be able to start and run some high surge loads when these high frequency solar generators are new, but every time you fire up that inductive load, you're shortening the life of the MOSFETs in your solar generator's inverter. High frequency inverters run much hotter than low frequency, transformer-based inverters like the XW series inverter, which makes the low cost, off spec, Chinese made components such as capacitors, diodes, MOSFETs, resistors and ICs that are used in cheap high frequency inverters, far more prone to early failure. Another major consideration with high frequency, transformer free solar generators is safety. All it takes is for one of their MOSFETs or IGBTs to short to ground in the H-Bridge or the control circuitry to fail and these transformerless units can send dangerous, high voltage, high amperage DC current straight to your connected AC loads which will not only damage most AC appliances but can also set those AC appliances on fire.

I already knew these kind of inverters are better than high frequency ones for inductive loads, but that's not even the whole story. Capacitive loads, switching power supplies without power factor correcting circuitry... high frequency inverters are also quite inefficient for those. I've been using a power bank with a 600VA inverter and that mede me realise said i efficiencies beyond theory.

I am glad you are doing this series on the XW Pro. I choose to go with the XW Pro a couple of years ago, but I started first with the MPPT 60 150 charge controllers, 4 for my 4 arrays. I also got the InsightHome (called the Conext Gateway then, which has been discontinued and products added to replace it: InsightHome and the bigger InsightFacility) I have acquired the full PDP and was about to order the Pro, then was laid off - so that order is in the wait queue. I use the InsightHome directly on my home LAN everday and also via the cloud as it adds some more control/query features. I too am planning on one Pro, but plan for adding a second one later. Appreciate the comments on your wiring of the unit, and I will keep all your comments in mind when that day comes. BTW, I am using a 2005 Xantrex 5500 watt 120v invert now, and live 99% off the grid. I do use the grid as my backup generator though. Oh the 1% on grid? The electric range/stove. I need the Pro to go 100% off keep up the videos, I am waiting for the next one

Stepping it up I see. My first inverter was a 4kw Schneider. Really robust and worked well but was expensive especially for all the little extras that you needed. For reasons unknown it's programmed to not assist the generator unless you buy the automatic generator start. And I was running a tiny generator so it needed assistance. I was forced to buy thier super expensive automatic generator start AGS even though I wasn't using it to start a generator. I just had to plug it into the network which enabled the feature I needed. It was almost as if I was paying for the feature. Then a volcano opened up in my neighborhood and the acid rain and fog blew through the cooling vents of the inverter and disintegrated components on the board.

Sorry to hear about the volcano. I just dealt with an extended power outage from hurricane Ian. With newer firmware's, you don't need an AGS for generator support, or if your generator supports 2wire starting. If some of your other equipment is still functioning, it may be worthwhile to pick up another inverter!

The XW is a glorious beast. I have a handful on my Homestead and I have many customers with them deployed. The only sad thing that I can think of is the discontinued system control panel but, insight monitoring, has improved over time and it is almost OK. Congratulations on a great system!

FYI, you can still use the SCP with the XW Pro. Insight Home is recommended (and can do more like update firmware), but the SCP still works on the XW (and CSW) systems. I'm using an SCP and Insight Gateway (the predecessor to Insight Home).

The SCP, while originally designed to be an installer tool, is very loved by homeowners. Schneider is being obstinate by forcing everyone to the insight home / facility. I think they should come out with an IDP (Insight Display Panel), ideally one that could fit where the XW's green display is! It should show voltage, power in/out, pv, ac flow + minor controls.

Planning a pair of these with the EG4 Cabinet and 48 Solar 415W panels. Also a small natural gas 12KW generator. A few comments: 1- The PDP should have ground and neutral tied together (inverter = separately derived system). 2- Surge protector best be mounted outside the PDP (in case of catastrophic failure). 3- Battery cables inside PDP best mounted behind the terminal.

Maybe for #1. If David is using it to backfeed his main panel, he'll already have a neutral / ground bond in there - and likely on a shared bus bar. Ideally that would be redone to separate everything, as well as unbond. But he's not likely to do that, especially if he wants to occasionally use the grid. Having two earth-neutral bonds would not be correct as neutral current will flow through the ground (bad). So for his use-case, there should be no bond in the Schneider.

@@billjohnson3344 i dont think he has grid at all, maybe he does. Really depends on how his setup outside of this inverter is installed. I get the separately derived system also, like in a larger stepdown transformer, you create a neutral/ground bond on the secondary side while also bonding to building steel, at least here for az.

Aesome System, UK Distributor here, unfortunately does not meet UK ENA type testing for UK grid deployment, however when these are stacked (inverters) ALL THE OUTPUTS Double or Quadruple depending on how many inverters you stack... Good choice. Awesome for Off grid...... Enjoy !

Thanks. This one has actually been running over a month now with zero faults. It's amazing to me, that this Schneider is working so much better than the Sol-Ark ever did. And the Sol-Ark said it was a 9kW inverter. The Schneider is a 6.8kW inverter. But the Sol-Ark was shutting down on me about every other day.

A big toroidal transformer is a great foundation to build on. That type of toroid-based inverter can handle challenging loads, like a microwave oven.

I have a Growatt SPF6000T with a 10Kw Rosen LifePO4 battery and the 1.15kw microwave gives it fits sometimes. I think it might be a problem with the battery.@@DavidPozEnergy

Schneider makes nice units. I ended up with a Sol Ark 15k. I understand the issues with the 12k and line imbalance making the unit fault out. I reworked for critical loads and cleaned up the imbalance I had between L1 and L2. However, Ive seen as high as 1500w difference between L1 and L2 sustained and no shut downs yet. Nice set up.

@@onthelake9554 You must not know about solark. Its a transformer-less inverter so if you create such an imbalance between the L1 and L2 it'll trip the inverter. I believe the 12k solark is actually 9kw. So 4.5kw for each L1 and L2, if you exceed the 4.5kw for one leg it'll trip. The OP was just stating he's seen as much of an imbalance of 1500w between the L1 and L2 and it didn't shutdown.

I have two 12kW solarks and they can’t handle much of a load at all. Surges especially. After watching others with the same experiences I’ve decided to trade mine for three Schneider XW Pro. I think with all the extra units is will still be leads expensive and more power.

Your welcome. Both Victron and Schneider are high quality. I don't think you will go wrong either way. Personally, I think Victron has done a better job with user-interface. But, Schneider has done a much better job with wire management, and UL. If your application is going to be permitted and inspected by the town, then Schneider is the way to go. If it's not inspected, then both options are on the table.

From one David to another : GREAT JOB AS USUAL. The only problem I see going forward is how are you ever going to take that down to test other inverters? You are going to love it (and so is the wife). Check out this channel on : "Around the homestead with Ryan and Sue". They are are MIDNITE employees ; I like the model they use where they keep the XW et al as the standard for powering the homestead, so it never moves, but occasionally will be testing other equipment (mostly MNS stuff) on another wall in the power shed.

My testing of inverters usually lasts a year or more. The only exception was the Sol-Ark, which was such a massive disappointment. So, if I need to test other inverters I can still do so on the workbench. Or, I might pull down the Growatts and use that wall space.

You should stack 2 eventually. The schneider inverters never fail with any of my customers. Only had to warranty one and it was bad from the factory. Customer service is great too.

Just a bit of information. When tightening a fitting against metal, you need to tap on the lock nut to have the dielectric properties of the paint worn of and have metal to metal contact. Also use bond bushing on any metal penetration with a metal type connector over 3/4" knock outs. Other than that most excellent installation, can't wait to see more.

So it seems Schneider stepped up and resolved your issues. Thats good. It would be nice if you do a cost/value issue/benefit analysis of the systems you tested. SOL-Ark, Schneider, SMA, Growatt, Voltronics, etc.

Thanks. I plan to do a detailed comparison video after I finish the full install of the Schneider. However, I will say that the Sol-Ark was a massive disappointment. I've never tested a Voltronics, could you link to one that you think would be good to compare with the Schneider?

@@DavidPozEnergy you chose unwisely... or those advising you did. Sol-Ark is clear about their L1,L2 balance and limits. The electrician I started with wouldn't even check each breaker load/ appliance to verify the balance.. still looking for a qualified installer who won't take short-cuts to make sure my system works correctly.. Sol-Ark tech has been very helpful each time I contact them. But I'm not going to rely on me or an electrician who isn't familiar with how Sol-Arks should be set-up for my particular use. I don't know how much your set-up is costing without the cost of external personnel. You are fortunate to be able to do that yourself.

I like both. For over a year I've been running my whole house on a pair of Growatts. That was pretty budget friendly, but it wasn't UL listed. I had a lot of requests for a fully UL listed, and code compliant install.

This really is a professional inverter that performs how a typical grid supply would, instead of tripping out the second you exceed the "rated" capacity. I am curious how long the unit will last with all those electrolytic caps.

I don't know how long individual components are made to last. But, at least you can replace the capacitor board in the field.

@@DavidPozEnergy In general with electrolytic caps, it's primarily based on ambient temp. I think 15 years would be about max at low Temps, but could be as low as a couple months at high Temps, like 105c. I assume it will last through the 5 year warranty.

I agree. I am interested in their 11kw battery. For me, I could hook it up to an inverter and have a powerful system that would just about meet my electrical needs daily except in summer (AC). If I needed more batteries one more unit can be easily hooked up for 22kw without having to go through the hassle of a server rack and bus bars and many more cables

Hi David, Thanks for all your hard work making these videos. I've had an off grid second home since 2005 and I'm currently upgrading from my SW4024 Plus to the Schneider XW 6800 Pro. I'm also adding two Schneider 60-150's and another 4200 watts of solar. I hope to have it all commissioned this coming spring. The added capacity will be much appreciated to run our new 30k BTU mini split. A new battery bank is also on the list but I'm on the fence between Ruixu and EG4 Lifepower. I'm also hoping the battery prices will drop a bit as the technology spreads. I see in several of your videos that this inverter has such high surge capacity and where you state you run it up over 8K watts everyday. Can you explain how you run 8000 watts through the 60 amp breaker in the PDP? I also wanted to note that when you live off grid that Propane is your best friend, at least for me it is. My two refrigerators, my hot water maker, range, several lights, and steam boiler are all propane requiring zero electricity to operate. In the event my inverter is down and it has been at times in the past I don't loose all of my creature comforts. Cheers and keep the camera running.

Congrats on living off grid since 2005! That's so cool. My latest video is me paralleling a second Schneider, so you might also want to check that out. 8,000W/240V=33.3A That's no big deal to feed through a 60A circuit breaker. I haven't tested the Ruixu battery, so I can't compare it with the EG4. I've been running my EG4 about 2 years now and very happy with it. Another great video David. I have the Schneider XW+ with the PDP and additional wire way set up just as you do. I am curious why you ran two 4/0 cables for both the positive and negative from the PDP to your bus bars? It wasn’t shown but you must have then connected the 4/0 cables from your LifePower4 battery bank to your bus bars? Which is one 4/0 cable each for the positive and negative. Which you could have run directly into the PDP, correct? Did you run 2 each of the 4/0 cables from the PDP to the bus bar in case you ad a second LifePower4 battery bank in the future? And do you plan to ad a Schneider AGS (Automatic Generator Start) to your system? Thanks, and thanks for another great video.

I ran a pair of 4/0 positives (and neg) from PDP to external bus bars. I did this because I hope to purchase a second inverter next year and parallel. I didn't want to have to re-do all my wiring then. Since the 4/0 is the biggest, and most challenging wire to run, I wanted it in. Once I start adding charge controllers the PDP will start to get cluttered with wires and I was worried adding a second 4/0 into the PDP would be a challenge later. Probably silly of me, but it doesn't hurt anything. It took very little extra time today, but would take a lot more time later.

Dave, I always enjoy your videos - glad to see you looking into the Schneider...it seems like a quality product. Can you share what your 'max Amp draw' is at your home. I know that it is subjective for each homeowner, but curious if the Schneider can support both a A/C, range and oven all pulling full load at the same time. My measurements have it at just under 10kw for short term bursts...curious if just (1) of the units you're testing could support that for intermittent loads. Thanks in advance. RR

Hi RR, My home is all electric. Electric range (oven and stove top), mini-split AC's, Dryer, water heater, etc. 100% electric. I have run my oven and dryer at the same time, with the rest of the lights/TV stuff on. It bounced up to 9kW, but doesn't stay there long-term. The oven and dryer both have thermostats that kick them on and off to maintain temperature. But, this testing is hard on the unit and ideally, 2 inverters would be better suited for my home. I'm a tester and reviewer of products, so I'm OK with kickin' it's butt right now.

My $9000.00 Schneider boat anchor. I bought two XW PRO 6848, a PDP, and an insight home. The total price for purchasing this system was around $9000.00. So while attempting to torque the AC connections screws to the recommended 45 inch pounds, I managed to damage a couple of the screws. Apparently the correct tool for tightening these screws is something literally no one will have at their home. It is not available at Lowes, Home Depot, or Harbor Freight. I had to order the tool of the internet from Milwaukee Tools. Maybe they could include this specialty bit with the inverter or at least warn you that without it you will destroy your inverter. I inquired to Schneider to see if there was some way to replace these damaged screws. They informed me that these screws could not be replaced, there was no parts available to repair the problem, and that since I had damaged the screws through "Improper Installation" my warranty was voided. Well that is some really great customer service. Imagine if you got a new fancy $4500 refrigerator at Home Depot. While installing the refrigerator, you damaged the cheap little plastic thing on the back while attempting to connect the ice maker hose. Whirlpool then told you, there was no way to repair the problem, and that they were voiding your warrantee since you had damaged your refrigerator. Would you consider this acceptable customer service? I have to say that on the whole these inverters seem well constructed. The PDP panel is well thought out and allows all the connections into and out of the system to be neat and tidy. That said apparently these are a "disposable" item. If anything goes wrong from a single screw, to apparently anything else, there are no parts available to repair anything. If they decide the problem is your fault, you have yourself a very expensive boat anchor with no warranty. FYI, My inverters actually DID include 3/4 inch bushing that were missing from your inverter.

If you buy an EV it should start with the letter Tesla. Also if you need power management to control the rate your car charges when the sun is shining, look toward openevse. You can signal your excess solar power on a mqtt server and the openevse will get that number and adjust what the car uses at that moment. We just got an AO smith heat pump water heater and it draws 360w running. So no need for power management here! Please don’t forget to test your Schneider with imbalanced 120v draws. 8kw from that inverter is awesome!

@@DavidPozEnergy MQTT is a data distribution server. It can run on a Raspberry PI or a PC in your house. So you make the MQTT server accept the excess amps as a number from your inverter and the openevse device can "subscribe" to that same number. Each time the number updates, the MQTT server makes sure the openevse gets that number. I can certainly explain more later.

I do have 1 question maybe you could help with, why is your breaker a 60 amp breaker and not higher? 80 amp or 100 amp? Is this bc of the size of your solar array bring 12kw? Thanks again. The 60A breaker is per inverter. The 60A breaker comes with the PDP. Schneider sized The breaker to match the inverter. As for the Charge controller, I did buy one. I just haven't installed it yet. I'll be making a video just on that.

Next year I hope to save enough money to purchase an EV. If that happens, I'll buy a second XW inverter in order to power an EV charger. But, once I start adding wires for the charge controllers the inside of the PDP might get tight. Since the 4/0 wires are the biggest, they are the hardest to find room for. I figure install the biggest wires now, and I can fish the thinner wires around them. Kinda like when you build a house, you install plumbing before electrical.

When you bring in the battery cables why did you do a double set...i.e. 2 positive and 2 negative? I'm reading the installation guides and not seeing where that is called out. Is that required or are you simply being extra conservative and giving more wire to reduce heat/resistance?

A single 4/0 wire is plenty for a single XW inverter. I ran a pair because I plan to buy an EV in the future and will buy a second inverter at that point. So I figured I'll just run the 4/0 wires now while I'm doing all the wiring.

I have not had the pleasure of testing the 12kW Growatt inverter. The Growatt should sustain 12kW for at least an hour, so it's going to be more powerful. However, the Growatt consumes 200 Watts in idle, and the Schneider consumes 31 Watts in idle. I think the Growatt is 88% efficient, and the Schneider is 96% efficient. If you plan to use the inverter 24/7, such as an off grid home, then I'd go Schneider. But, if this is a project that will be off most of the time, and you only fire it up when there is a power outage, then the Growatt is more cost affective.

just a note: your ground wire from the PDP to the 6848 should be connected to the grounding lug in the compartment with the AC/DC connections, not down in the conduit box. however, where you connected it, it *SHOULD* still be bonded with the chassis of the inverter just fine... but technically the conduit box should have it's own ground run. i just upgraded from an old Xantrex 6048 to two of these myself! I'M LOOKING FORWARED TO THIS SERIES!!

@@DavidPozEnergy no - nothing in the manual sadly. i just went off what the terminals that you connect the wires to look like/are for, myself. the lug in the inverter is the same screw type terminal on the breaker end, where the lug in the conduit box is more of the solar-panel-bare-copper-grounding-lug style. my PDP was also already installed in the house when i got it. when i upgraded to the dual 6848's, i emulated what made sense/what was already there. besides, like i said before: the screws attaching the conduit box to the bottom of the inverter *SHOULD* provide sufficient bonding of the 2 metal parts to alleviate one of the grounding points anyway. "should". LOL! BTW, i REALLY enjoy your channel and am looking forward to this whole series! thanks, man.

The Growatt inverters powered my house fine. I really didn't have any problems. Sometimes there was more Voltage sag with the Growatts when starting heavy loads, but that's it. I've been asked by viewers for years to test the Schneider inverter. Now I am. The Schneider costs more than the Growatts, but it definitely a better inverter.

Right now I'm using the Growatt inverters only as charge controllers. I have a Schneider charge controller that I'll be hooking up during the next month and move one of the arrays over to it. It takes a long time to film and edit everything, that's why I'm doing this in stages.

I keep seeing comments about breaker vs fuse. Comments that make it sound as if breaker="protecting equipment" and fuse="protecting wires". I sort of assume I'm just misreading but can you provide any insight on this topic? In particular I'm looking at the 4/0 wire bringing the battery current into the PGP. Is that 250Amp DC breaker in that circuit all the protection needed? Or should that line also have some sort of inline fuse?

Hi Jeff, Thanks for your question. Let me see if I can help the general understanding. Keep in mind, this is a huge topic that can't be fully explained in one comment. Both fuse and circuit breaker are a type of "overcurrent protection device". NEC (national electric code) requires a circuit to have overcurrent protection. Think of the circuit as all the items in the electrical path. This means wires, bus bars, inverters, etc. Each time another circuit is created, there needs to be overcurrent protection specific to that circuit. In addition (and depends on specifics) there needs to be a way to disconnect for service. Sometimes, it's not practical to use a circuit breaker and a fuse is used instead. Sometimes you need a higher rating and the fuse provides it better than a breaker. In this case, I'm using the Schneider PDP (power distribution panel). The PDP comes with a 250A circuit breaker which provides both overcurrent protection, and a means of disconnect. But, think about where the circuit breaker is located. What circuit is it specifically protecting? The answer is: The 4/0 wires to/from the inverter, and the inverter itself. That 250A CB in the PDP does nothing to protect the wires to the charge controllers, which is why they need their own overcurrent protection. And so on.

There are various ways to achieve each and sometimes a single device does both and sometimes you need a second device. When you say the 250A breaker in the PDP is protecting "The 4/0 wires to/from the inverter, and the inverter itself." Does that also include the 4/0 wire between the battery and the PDP? Meaning both legs of that trip Battery->Breaker->Inverter are all protected from that single breaker in the circuit?

You mention that has a DC circuit breaker bar. Does that actually mean this breakers bypass the inverter and allow you to use the power straight from your solar panels?

No, that's not what I mean. Right now there is just one large (250A) circuit breaker for the DC. It goes between the battery and inverter. But, this large panel can accommodate more circuits. You could have up to 3 inverters, and 6 charge controllers, all wired into this one panel. That's 9 DC circuit breakers. This PDP can accommodate expansion in the future. The circuit breakers for the charge controller will go between the charge controller and the positive busbar.

If you just want a grid-tied solar system then you will still need some form of a grid-tie inverter which goes between the solar panel and the grid.

All Solar Photovoltaic panels produce DC (direct current). The electrical grid is AC (alternating current). There must always be an inverter between DC and AC to invert from one to the other.

I have a13 year old Schneider XW Series Hybrid Inverter/Charger, CW60/48-120/240-60. I’ve been using Trojan lead acid batteries for this time. My question to anyone is: will this inverter model or is this model configureable to LiFePo4 280ah cells? I’ve heard and have read my manual and it sounds like Lithium Fe Po4 are programmable through the “Custom Battery Menu”. But not sure how this works exactly. I do know you need to shutoff the equalize function under the battery setup. Look forward to someone’s helpful comment(s)! Thanks

Hi Erik, I've been using this inverter to power my whole house for almost 2 months now. I have a LiFePO4 battery bank, and it works fine with the Schneider. However, right now I'm using the Schneider strictly as an inverter. If you want to use the Schneider XW PRO as an inverter AND charger, then you need to set the parameters for charging a LiFePO4 battery. The way to set the charging parameters is through an external device. There are two devices, the "insight home" and the "insight facility". Both serve the same function (being an interface) but the facility is larger for large systems. I have the insight home because my system is small-medium. Once you hook up an insight home then you can open it in a web browser on a computer (it has wifi built in). in the web browser you can adjust hundreds of settings.
