This is a must WATCH! I finally met up with an ole FOE atop this public land mountain and the match will not soon be forgotten. Sometimes as turkey hunters, we all meet that gobbler that acts a little different and as soon as you sit down against him you know the duel will be different. This was that turkey. Love the respect given to the bird. i myself have wished i could breath life back in them and put him back on top of that mountain doing his thing. Sometimes the kill almost spoils it.. Notice i said Almost. LOL Not enough to stop, but i know you know what i am saying.. As always, great video Dave.... Keep them coming.

I was listening to a podcast featuring Col. Tom Kelly and the fella talked about Mr. Kelly’s ability to articulate the hunters experience, feelings, emotion, etc. He talked of when a person can put into words what you are feeling and otherwise thought indescribable you form a relationship. You my friend are like that to me. Your content articulates such a true essence of what it’s about. From the hunt to the time you take during the end to sit and be still and appreciate the whole thing. Really love your content, thanks for being an inspiration! Good luck this season.

Had a bird similar to that. Hunted that joker for a few years. He had his spot in our bottom and it was his. He bested me every time, he slipped once and he’s on my wall. Only bird I’ve ever felt that needs to be on the wall, he has my respect

When I finally get the turkey I’ve been chasing for a few days I always have a moment of sadness knowing his gobble won’t be there the next morning. I always pay respect to these great birds.

I've had the privilege of outwitting a couple of old birds. I have two sets of 1 1/2" spurs! You can't beat having to work for them. Thank you for walking us through the hunt. Getting excited about turkey season coming up.

I have watched many of your videos. This is one of my favorites. There is something special about an old bird on public land. They have a six sense and sometimes the stars align for us. What you said at the end of the video.....I’ve been fortunate to feel that a few times too. *Respect, determination, hard work, and humility* I appreciate it and it keeps me coming back

They didn't seem like they wanted to gobble much for me last spring, it was more of an ambush style of hunting. I still got two on the ground which was fine with me but those hunts where you hear him gobble and know he's coming are the ones that I think most of us get out of bed for. Great hunt as always!

Whoa! Those aren't spurs, they are clubs!! Thanks for the great recap and seeing you humbled by that old bird is a tear jerker! Just as good as having it on film. It's opening eve here in CO, finally. I'll be running all your commentaries thru my head all season long. Ben Rodgers Lee was one of my early mentors and like he said " i'm gonna call 'em up , crawl up on 'em or bushwack 'em, one or the other".... Unfortunately, I never got to meet him before he was killed, but maybe I can meet you one day. Let's hope so. I have a new mentor now ! Thanks for sharing and have a safe season. Love you, man.

Great video. I've been in that situation plenty of times. From the waddles on up. I sure wish I could make the sounds you do with a mouth call. I guess I just don't have the palate shape to make it happen after all these years. Different ball game with a pot call. I'm the same with no decoys, and I just can't make myself crawl either. I have to win the curiosity battle. Thanks for sharing, Dave. Enjoyed it.

Dave, I live in SE Tennessee and hunt public land mountain Easterns. I learned from Ben Lee MANY years ago Hoot, locate, move, hoot locate again, move...and finally set up. And usually, REPEAT...several times. I have never been a crawler...I've had several friends get shot by crawling. Usually because there was a novice somewhere nearby that they made the mistake of crawling too close to. So it usually comes down to who has the best set up, between where the turkey is, and where he wants to be. I covered 138 miles last season with my boots. I did kill 4 (limit), It took ALL Spring. I was wondering, how many days do you go out and NOT work a bird? (hear it, but it won't respond)

He didn't see a hen and walked away. Not weird at all. I get not wanting to use a decoy, especially on public land, but sometimes a hen deke set up can break an old bird and get him to do what they're not bred to do and come in for the shot.

Which is exactly why I don't use them. I'd prefer to rely on my woodsmanship and a more advanced degree of strategy to get into shooting range versus relying on visual stimulus. It's just my preference. It made this particular hunt so much more involved and rewarding to me.

He makes his own calls, the shotgun is a Benelli M2 20 ga and the choke tube looks like a Trulok precision hunter.
