interestingly, according to lore, I believe we would have the pleasure of sharing Aragorn's perspective today. A meeting like this happened at none other than the prancing pony, concerning the ring. In your own humorous way you very much brought to life the way that LOTR is high fantasy without being cringe. So much modern fantasy falls into a trap by which in trying to be high fantasy like Tolkien and focus on the righteous morality of "good" characters and the badness of bad characters, they forget to weave in the nuance that makes Tolkien's work so unique in the genre. His world building is nearly unmatched, still today, but most impressive of all is the way his characters exist in his world seemingly without being written, almost as if they're a part of something he is simply describing as it's memories unfold before them. A great example is the all the nuance in Boromir's story. Those details are what make the story so compelling even today I think; especially considering the relatively unimportant role he plays in advancing the plot. The way in which Gollum constantly battles his conscience, Sam battles with his responsibility towards Frodo and his longing for the Shire, but also his beautifully sincere desire to be next to his friend in hard times. The way Frodo deals with his burdens, his moments of weakness where Sam is the only thing that pulls him through, the way he lashes out at Sam, it's all in there. Tolkien understood something intrinsic to human nature that a lot of fantasy writers simply haven't had the life experience to fully grasp. He understood that people are never ideal, even when they're idealists; that even someone who is intrinsically good and incorruptible is not totally without selfishness, it's human nature. And I think that depth is what makes me connect with the characters in Tolkien's work.
