IT'S NOT A WRAP! In this video we take you behind the scenes of our latest project - a full-body conversion of our Protonic Blue BMW i3 94Ah REx.
We stripped all the panels off and replaced them with a brand new set painted in Gulf Blue, a stunning historic Porsche colour. To replicate the 'Sport Package' which is only available in Continental Europe, we also added i3s arches and alloy wheels.
Last but not least, a huge thank you to Southside ARC Bodyshop in London for the incredible job on the paintwork!

Yet another excellent video from Wisely; one of the many things that retracted me to getting my i3 in 2019 was the radical engineering that went into this car. Here we can see that the plastic body panels (that don’t dent or rust!) are pop fitted to the boy shell, absolute genius! I have long thought that body panels could be fabricated from plastic - particularly front wings (fenders in North America), this would be lower cost, dents would pop out and they are lighter too. In the 1970’s Renault designed their Renault 5 with plastic wrap around bumpers, back when the norm was a steel apron with chromed steel bumpers, now all cars have plastic front and rear sections, so why not other body parts too? Citroen moved toward this with the BX - a classic car - clearly it can be done.

That finished car has to be one of the best looking i3 s out there: no colour clashes; just pure, subtle styling. PS the black 431 wheels work better than the diamond cuts 😁

Fantastic, inspiring video. How thoroughly did you document the process of removing the panels and installing the new panels? Why did you choose to have new panels painted rather than repainting the original panels? Would you be willing to edit and release a longer version of the video detailing each stage of the process? Thanks for sharing this video, it's outstanding.

We do not have much more footage available documenting the entire conversion. But, long story short, painting over paint is never as good as painting on clean panels + would require sanding anyways to produce a nice result.

This is amazing, someone could make custom panels with a slightly different shape! I'd like to see it with color matched Pizza Wheels. I saw an i3 with contrasting dark gray rear doors, gave the car and entirely different look, ala Audi r8 GT. Also, I wonder if the pizza wheels are more aero than the spokes, the holes may be the same size but they are smoother. Who wants to make some $, sell a lid for the frunk compartment, ideally, hinged, but even a Snap-On lid would be an improvement, should have come that way from factory. It could keep leaves and rodents out

What's the cost / benefit of painting compared to wrapping? How much does it cost to give an i3 a new paint job or a wrap? I like the idea of having a non-factory colour...

We decided to go with paint instead of a wrap because the finished product looks much closer to a factory finish (which cannot be said for a wrap once you walk up close to the car). We don’t have an exact figure but it’s about £4,000 all in. So definitely more expensive than a wrap and involving more labour - which is the main reason why we don’t offer it as a service for customers…

Thanks! 😊 We got brand new unpainted panels from BMW which then got painted at a local paint shop. Original ones are in boxes now.

@@dentalert they're definitely missing a trick not doing so, especially given how easy it is to swap them over. It was one of the USPs of the original Smart car!

Do you recommend wrapping the original panels as an alternative to purchasing and painting new panels while keeping the originals in great condition?

Wraps look OK on photos or viewed from a distance, but up close we're yet to see one which looks anywhere as good as proper paint. Another thing to consider with wrapping which is often forgotten is the cost of removing it at the end, and also the risk of this being done poorly. We've had a few cars come to us where a real mess has been made either during wrapping or unwrapping... broken clips, score marks, glue residue etc. If on a budget, we would sooner re-paint a car's original panels (as opposed to buying new ones)... but easiest to just enjoy your original colour :)

We bought brand new unpainted panels from BMW, got them painted at a bodyshop, and then swapped them over onto the car. A very expensive project for what it is...
