Ironic Disney is criticizing a kingdom only granting the safest, most non threatening wishes, while constantly stamping out competitors 😂 This is literally Iger’s Disney It feels like the same adorkable, crooked grin heroine every Disney animated film, fighting flawed systems they don’t really understand. Do they address conflicting wishes and the dangers of relying upon external forces to achieve your dreams and live fulfilling lives? Wishes should’ve always been irrelevant

No they don't really address the wishes much at all, they're part of someone's "soul" which is a nice touch, but they don't really go into specifics of the wishes. Although the old man gets his wish back (i.e. part of his soul) and does end up doing what the wish was.

Mabey Disney+ is becoming a dumping ground for all Bob Iger's financial failures @@Alachia. The last Film from the animation studio that I watched that had respect for both adults and children's intelligence by telling a strong story that integrated a good message with well realized characters was Encanto, and that was almost two years ago. I feel like starting around mid 2022, Walt Disney Animation's output has been lacking in telling compelling stories because a lot of the studio's output has begun feeling more cynical, synthetic, and disingenuous because I got the sense that they began being more interested in pushing underbaked social messaging instead of simply telling compelling narratives with characters you can related to in some way. Pushing for social reform can work in children's media such as a Disney film, but it has to be done so in an organic way that is integrated into the story so well that you don't even realize it until the ride back home. The problem is because these messages are being represented in such a blatantly obvious matter that it leaves zero room for self-interpretation and nuance, it feels like the filmmakers are talking at their audience instead of with their audience and hoping they won't notice. it is insulting to the audience's intelligent

I grew up with Looney Tunes and Micky Mouse and company, and watched a Hong Kong series about Cixi Dowager who went from a regular girl to become a ruthless ruler of China. I mean kids don't really need made-up stories about how females could overcome men and become rulers in such unbelievable settings like in Wish. Also, didn't kings and emperors of the past have absolute power? Anyone against them they could just order the person to be executed. The plot of Wish just doesn't make sense to me.

@@AlachiaAre people wishing for fantastical things, like the ability to fly or see the future, or are they wishing for things they could probably accomplish with hard work? It doesn’t make sense to me to give away a wish that you could just accomplish on your own. Actually, the premise of the movie sounds convoluted and non-sensical to me. Is it believable in the context of the story?
@NorthStar8211
@NorthStar8211 7 ай бұрын
@@Dark_Kommissar Some of the wishes are the kind of stuff that can only be granted through magic, though a few of these could be granted with modern day technology. There was a woman who wished she could fly and in the end she is encouraged to work on a flying machine. Not exactly if this is what she had in mind but it is a way to approach it. There might have been wishes that can be accomplished with hard work but even that is a bit uncertain. One woman wished she could make the best dresses in the land. What qualifies as "best" and how would she know if she is better than all the other dress-makers? Someone else appears to have wanted to be the strongest man in the land; how can that be measured and how can it be achieved realistically? You can try exercising and training but does this always work? The heroine's grandfather wanted inspiration to write a song that will inspire others. This is the kind of thing that is not only the product of hard work; people may be working hard but having an idea depends on many factors which is why people sometimes wish/pray for inspiration. Some seemed to be wishing for true love or having a happy, healthy family or having children, which are not always things that one can control or achieve because of numerous real life complications and it is not always a matter of effort or hard work. Wishes in fiction often tend to be for practically impossible things such as bringing wooden puppets to life. In Puss in Boots 2 the Last Wish, two of the wishes were completely impossible to achieve without supernatural means and the two other wishes, though not completely impossible, could really use some magical help. Magnifico also states more or less that wishes in real life can be crushed because of factors that one cannot prevent, no matter what. And sometimes, people just don't have the right support or connections or opportunities to achieve their goals and ambitions even if they work hard and sometimes they just don't have the necessary innate talent or genetic/physical/mental ability. So yes, it is believable in the context of the story but it depends on your epistemological viewpoint really. Not everyone will agree.

Equating absolute monarchy with fascism is a bit disingenuous. They're not the same thing. But I don't necessarily blame you for that; that's most likely the confusion (or, more likely, the cognitive dissonance) of the writers/Disney. Also, revolutions within history were most often fomented by oligarchs/aristocrats, whipping the plebs up into a frenzy, _against_ absolute monarchies (part of whose job it is to protect the plebs against the abuses of the aristocracy) and leading to fascist regimes led by the same oligarchs.

This review was very interesting to me because my takeaway was completely different. I watched this movie with 3 friends yesterday and we were whispering to each other that the king going off the deep end after whipping out the magic book and crushing the dreams of those around him had the same vibes as having a parent who gets into drugs, but like, a fantasy version. I was like, "Hey, this reminds me of when my dad became an alcoholic." Prior to getting lost in the magic book sauce, we thought Magnifico was pretty reasonable. We were sort of running under the assumption that he was filtering wishes with well-intentioned logic/responsibility, or at worst overthinking things. Wishing for the ability to breathe underwater sounds dandy, but critters, pressure, temperatures, etc. make it potentially very dangerous. It's no threat to the kingdom overall, but it could be detrimental to the safety of the wisher. Or someone could wish to blow up Crete or something. These are the kinds of things we thought about. Then he started doing magic/drugs and went nuts. The queen's protests and the king's over the top responses to questions and concerns reminded me of the many times my family tried to get my dad to stop drinking.
@NorthStar8211
@NorthStar8211 7 ай бұрын
But none of the wishes were like that. They were all very basic and harmless, such as flying or being more talented in something. The kind of stuff a child would wish for, really. Citizens were overall very innocent-minded. The King was only filtering out more ambitious wishes that he thought would cause social unrest and could jeopardise his reign. Such as an artist potentially inciting violence because of a new song. In which case, great films such as Joker would not be made because of the mere possibility that they might cause social unrest, which is nonsense of course.

The thing I found interesting, and which leads me to understand and definitely gives credence to your interpretation, was that he believed Disney got so lost in what they were making that they actually didn’t realize the message that they ended up making, until it ended up being what it is. I got that this was pagan influenced film. I think the King represents ( god in the Christian sense) and the book is the Bible). There are moments where they emphasize how he expects respect and appreciation for holding on to their wishes and granting them. Much like having hope and prayers granted. The pro pagan theme here argues, that hopes and wishes shouldn’t be given to one all powerful source and is and remains in all people and that the spiritualism he exhibits is something all people and animals have , individually and together independent of some greater being ( king/god) . There’s a lot of stars through the film of course, there’s the red pagan star created by the star in yarn. The queen is left to take over to show how this feminine based spirituality is much more giving than the male king who over scrutinizes people wishes and doesn’t grant them since he’s the ultimate judge on the matter on whether the wishes good for their kingdom overall.

Saying that one is more than the others because that came to mind first says more about your internal bias than the movie. Movie basically said: give me your freedom of choice and I will give you protection and security with a hint of wish loterry every now and then. That is basically everything.

At least the Giver, that story the child was inspired by his Sensei to learn more about color and bring back to their colorless world.

When I watched that movie "Wish", I saw ALL of these Wishes including the crushed ones RETURNING to these people who are selfish for demanding more. Not only GOOD Wishes returning, BAD Wishes are returning as well! Wishes are actually two faces of a coin, it can go either to the right way or to the wrong way. King Magnifico got a good point about the vague ones. Humans aren't very good at saying specifically what they wants, they are also capable of twisting and changing their wishes. Wishes are based on their DESIRES, right? They are based on their emotions and thoughts, right? Humans are capable of acting on their WISHES - even with or without help of Magic. They can even go as far as AT ALL COSTS! One tiny pebble tossed in the lake. Once the first domino is toppled, it begins a chain reaction that travels down the line... or rather, several lines. Just like a firing neuron, the pulse of falling dominoes is an all-or-nothing event. Fairy Godmother Asha should have known Wishes aren't all rainbows and unicorns, they can be beautiful and deadly at same time.... Just like a certain red, tempting Apple.

They've destroyed the Disney brand and lost billions that in any sane world, would have gotten them fired a long time ago. They also cut the part out in this current The Marvels movie where they were supposed to have made Captain Marvel and Valkyrie, "lame and gay" as South Park perfectly puts it lol. South Park is probably the reason why they removed that line.

Yes it is at least intriguing, because the king can be understood as the good guy in this story. For example my local authorities grant me access to a lot of interesting places, but ban me from places which are technically dangerous, or in which I legally have no business being there. I could wish driving a firefighters truck or accessing the computers of the city's accountancy, but it seems wise that I am not allowed to. Hence the cartoon here seems strangely insane. And another strange thing, the animation, as many reviewers noted, seems subpar, like a direct to dvd from an unknown company. From Disney and for their 100 years anniversary, that seems difficult to understand.

I think the movie got messy pretty early on given what they have said in the promo materials. The movie was at inception, the origin of Wish Upon a Star. That's it. Simple, sweet idea. We know from the artbook that Asha's conception was "normal girl who becomes an activist", that was the brief given to the artists who designed her. So they clearly had a message in mind, but as noted it was probably intended to be vague enough to transplant whatever you wanted onto it, perhaps slightly suggesting whiteness/patriarchy given the characteristics of the villian and hero. But yeah, that all got kind of muddled between all the other conflicting interests I think, the project just lacked strong leadership to keen everything on focus. Wish upon a star got mixed in with some anti-patriarchy messaging, which got watered down with references, which got watered down again with a focus on kiddies over everything. I don't think anyone at the top had the finished product in their head to help guide people to what they wanted, which I feel ultimately falls on the Director. I appreciate wrangling executives and getting them to NOT ruin a movie is hard, and not explicit on the job description, but that IS part of the job.

@@nyui_arantesoh sorry, I forgot to explain to people who may not understand what that is. It’s a practice within liberal society where men dress up as women due to leftist ideology that gender is non-binary. Scientifically speaking, chromosomes determine one’s gender, so this leftist ideology is teaching a new generation an unscientific concept and pressuring young children to embrace it. Luckily, many men and women are taking notice of this and are defending young children from being forced into embracing it.

@@cymbeline9933I think it was called “Squish-mellow” or something like that. It was a boy deer that had a tag which described adult themes and leftist ideology. It was far-left propaganda being casually planted on a little kids toy. For me, I’m not political, our family is from china and we have traditional family values. But it surprises me how many Americans don’t see leftist ideology as leftist-they think it’s “the way things should be for everyone”. But encouraging young children to crossdress is far-left. Disney is undermining Christian values because we could never have a wise king that knows that all wishes (prayers) can't be answered in the way we might want. I was on board for the hard-G but dark themes dissonance, I though that criticism explained aptly the bipolar reactions. But that tinfoil hat was apt; If we overthink a scene long enough, like a torture victim, we can get it to say what you want to hear. We never watched Snow White and said "there's messaging here that women are unfit to rule & Disney is pushing it down our throats" even though it was an EVIL QUEEN and stereotypical womanly qualities like jealousy was her demise. There you go, I just made that up on the spot. All I did, was "interrogate" the scene for 15 seconds. After getting so many evil queens, we have an evil king and your reflex was to dump it on "messaging" and "propaganda". I think you went off, there's too much noise out there we never really get to sit down and weed the nonsense out.
