The fact stephen king says this movie's even too scary for him speaks volumes to how intense this movie is. Also, the ending is that they died, the person they talked to earlier in the movie that talked about how the killer would put a kid in the corner and kill that kid last, That's basically what was happening, 1 was put into the corner while the other 2 were killed first

And she IMPROVISED THE MONOLOGUE and famous camera angle while acting the hell out of it! All to get rewarded with a Razzie and people sending her parents condolences because they thought she was actually dead, with the studio retaining the RIGHTS to the name she was BORN WITH bc the character's was the same, bc most of the dialogue was ablibbed (this was "justified" as a necessary part of keeping the hoax alive, even though I noticed the "director" and "writer" didn't go uncredited to promote the hoax, even tho again, MOST OF THE DIALOGUE AND SHOT COMPOSITION/FILMING WAS DONE BY THE ACTORS).

I always hated the complaints about this movie, like "So there's rocks piled up around tent. What's scary about a pile of rocks?". It's not the rocks, it's that they were asleep and someone or something was inches away from them and putting that there. It's like Paranormal Activity: yeah, a door opening and closing is a mild event in a Conjuring movie, but in these movies, it's like it's taking place in our reality, and in our reality, even a minor event like this would light your paranoia on fire. And worst of all, this movie is famous for being billed as actual found footage before we had social media, so it achieved a level of terror in people you can't really replicate now.

The acting was so realistic that some of it wasn't acting. The director would set up a spot where the cast would receive their notes and directions at the start of the day about what they were doing, and each person would also get their own secret notes that the others wouldn't know, and sometimes their notes would conflict with each others to cause conflict in the story, so most of the dialogue was improvised, which added to the realism. Like the day before Josh disappeared, he got a note to wait until the others fell alseep, then sneak out of the tent in the middle of the night (if they saw him leaving they told him to just tell them that he was gojng to the bathroom). When he snuck out the tent, the crew go him out of the way. So, Mike & Heather really didn't know where Josh was when they woke up the next morning. Since the actors used their real names, they came up with codes to let each other know when they were and weren't character. There's a lot of behind the scene stuff with how they made the movie that's really interesting. I grew up watching horror movies. My mom is the horror fan between my parents, and to this day, I've yet to see my mom actually scared from a horror kovie. I was probably 9 when this came out, and we watched it at home. I'll never forget my mom saying how disturbed she was when Heather turned the corner and she saw Mike standing and facing the corner at the very end before Hesther was taken out. Whenever I think of this movie, that's the first thing I think of, my mom's, the horror fan, disturbance, and seeing Mike standing in the corner like one of those slain children that was told about by one of the townfolks...

@RaptorNX01 Oh yeah, how could I have forgotten the map thing. Yeah, that was one of Mike's secret notes that he got that day was the map. It's such a brilliant tactic having them create conflict but because it definitely blurs the line because they still have to act in character, but it's all real tiredness and frustrations feeding it, made it all feel that much more real and raw. Especially considering the way they marketed this movie, they were gonna HAVE to get real and raw to make people believe it... and we did. Kudos to the director and kudos to the actors for selling it. I remember reading that they had so many hours and hours of unused footage...

I also really liked book of shadows when it was released. It’s not one I tend to go back to often but it was a fun one! The newer follow on is a fun time too but I wish it were a little more realistic like this one, it bugged me when the girl got snapped in half 😂 had it been slightly more realistic I’d have loved it so much more ! They’re great movies though I remember being in primary (elementary) school when the first was released and we had a big class discussion with our teacher coz we everyone seemed to have watched it the same weekend and we were all trying to figure out if it were real or not 😂😂

The famous story of the experienced middle aged hiker, she was hiking alone on part of the appalachian trail. She went off the trail to relieve herself and got lost. She wasnt found for 2 years, she had left a journal detailing her experience, she survived for 26 days then died of exposure. She stayed put because thats what your supposed to do, but the area she was lost in was so dense, she wasnt found in any of the searches. It turned out she was less than like 2000 metres from the trail, but was obviously unaware. Your ability to have a sense of direction in areas like that is basically non existent, even if you are very experienced, as Alanda said, you'll end up going in circles and make it more difficult for people to find you. But even if you do everything your supposed to, you still might never be found. Much scarier than the Blair Witch if you ask me 😂
@explosean9
@explosean9 6 ай бұрын
I'm assuming you're talking about Geraldine Largay because everything else matches up, but she was a lot farther from the trail then 200 metres. Her remains and tent were two miles from the trail, so like ~3200 metres. Still not that far, which is why there were a lot of questions/criticisms of the search and rescue, but 200 meters is like close enough to hear a shout from the trail. I also wouldn't necessarily call her experienced or that she did everything you are supposed to do. I say this not as criticism of her, and it's completely true that areas like the one she was in can be disorienting to the most experienced hikers. I say it to frame the incident as an important example to know your limitations and make smart decisions. She was doing the Appalachian Trail with a friend until they had a family emergency, and the friend didn't want her to continue alone because she didn't have a great sense of direction, wasn't that great with a compass, had taken wrong turns a couple of times already, and was afraid of being alone and of the dark. Her journal says she tried to find better reception by getting to higher ground, which only made her more lost. It's all so heartbreaking in the end. Her attempted texts and journal are so sad to read.

This movie still holds up imo, but the marketing at the time was brilliant. It truly used the Internet for its advantage; they posted missing posters of the actors using their real names, for example. It took a long while for the public to realize that it wasn't real. Side note, the fact Heather Donohue (now known as Rei Hance) was nominated for a Razzy Award for Worst Performance is proof they don't know shit. It doesn't have jump scares, it doesn't show anything, it just keeps that tension building until the end and leaves you guessing. Clearly they were attacked and murdered in some way, but you never see how or what did it. The ending scene in this movie is one of my favorites out of any horror movie. I saw this movie when it first came out in 1999 (I'm old) and it was marketed as being real. The actors were not allowed d to appear in public or reveal that they were actually alive. Missing persons websites were created for them. It was the first example of viral marketing, and that made it so scary. I saw the movie thinking that these were real people and this was real footage. I was so scared and upset at the end. It wasn't until a few months later that it came out that it wasn't real and that the people in the film were actors. .... The actors later said it kind of ruined their careers because they weren't allowed to promote the film and their performances. People really thought they were missing and that they were really their characters. It became impossible for them to get any acting gigs because of this misconception. .... I came out of that movie with a headache. Not just from being scared to death, but because of that damn camera jiggling, lol.

The Blair Witch Project may seem like a straightforward found footage film, but there’s a RIDICULOUS amount of lore that spans a dozen novels, several video games, fictional dossiers, and even comic books! It’s the dense world building that makes this one of my absolute favorite films of all time! And also the scariest… 😖 Also, one of my running theories about the ending: Josh and Mike, whether under the influence of the Blair Witch or not, lured Heather to the house to kill her.

This movie was so much fun back in 99. About 25 of us (friends of friends, co-workers) all went to the midnight showing at an indie theatre (which added to the whole documentary feel). We had totally fell for the marketing and had been reading about it online for weeks. We had a ball but several got sick from all the camera movements thou. That end shot had us all shooketh!

Fun Fact about this movie. A large majority of the "acting" was actually improv. They have given the cast very small script and give them the scenarios of when to be.... rationale..(Mike)...when to be crazy (Josh)..when be scared (Heather)...etc etc and due to the time period of when this documentary coming out...people actual thought these folk went missing cuz those names in the movie were there real names!! (Not Heather though) so the real live actors were getting phone calls checking to see if they were alive.

Miss Brown is the Blaire Witch. Look at her describe the Witch in specific details. How she made that wooded gate in front of her trailer. Match the wooded figures tied up the same type of white roping. She comes out talking to the students while Holding a black leather Bible book, which could be a cover up to her black leather book of witch craft. And how the other towns folk talk about her. I recommend you watch The Blaire Witch project 2: The book of shadows. It's more movie type but still really good.

It was such an eerie scenario.

It was 1998 and I remember reading a small blurb in EW about the film before its release but it never explained that it was not real. I made a mental note to go see it. I eventually caught a matinee showing and even though it was still light outside after I left the theater I was petrified! It took me a couple off days to shake off that feeling of isolation, despair, dread and fear that I had absorbed from my experience watching it because I had no internet to "research" the reality behind the film. I still think it's a brilliant horror film and I enjoyed your reaction immensely!

Oh wow, FANTASTIC reaction. The pit-of-your-stomach dread you mention is this movie's staggering achievement, especially since, as you say, you don't see anything. The story of the making of the film is as fascinating as the movie itself, please look into it when you can. There's also an excellent faux documentary called Curse of the Blair Witch, produced by the History Channel as a promo, that's well worth watching. Blair Witch 2 is a bizarre conceptual oddity -- an interesting filmmaker had a unique take on how to do a follow-up, but it was sabotaged by studio meddling. Not very good in any sense but a fascinating watch nonetheless.

I was just thinking how great a reaction this is simply because as she said , the quality compared to the cameras we have these days is so bad it makes you a little disoriented (which is great because it adds to the creep factor) she didn’t experience what we all did when it was released where many believed it to be real and she was still incredibly spooked ! It just goes to show how well this movie stands after all this time ! I was expecting her to get a little bored by it as some don’t take it for what it is and expect to see the spooky scary things in the dark. I love that it scared her even without all the added extras we got as kids / adults back in 1999! 😂 the visible distress in Alandas poor little face at the end proves that be it 1999 / 2024 this movie stands the test of time soooo well!

this is so scary though because heather is actually a pro hiker. We see this when they easily travel through the woods the first day. Then after they stayed that night they were already dead. The blair witch had made them hallucinate enough to the point that they were going in circles. People went to go look for them and I think they were only a few yards away from them.

Honestly, this does horror so well - leaving us lacking but seeking details, suggestions of things being seen and heard, leaving lots of empty space in the narrative for our own imaginations to fill in whatever it is we find scariest without even knowing we're doing it. Folks make fun but this was absolutely a game-changer.

I hate seeing you get so distressed but love the fact that you are still on your horror journey. Funny thing about it that made it worse for some people was the marketing campaign that had them posted as missing and the site information they had up made it seem real. This was the early days of the widespread internet, so it freaked a lot of people out. I was just about to start my Sr. year of HS when this came out. We need to get you some more camp, fun horror movies, cuz the trend lately has been listening to people that seem to be trying to freak Alanda out.

I remember when this film came out it was all anyone could talk about for months. I didn't see the film in theaters, my family rented it on VHS and watched it in the dark which honestly made it scarier for us. Even though we rented it a part of us felt it was so real, the acting is mostly improv but the cast and crew did a phenomenal job for the limited budget they had. Something cool to know is the cast and crew were in the woods for a week and had very little interaction with each other to make the film more authentic to the point where the crew literally planed jump scares for them and their scripts were bundled notes and talking points they were asked to do during the limited time they had to shoot. Even Josh's kidnapping by the witch wasn't told in advance which makes Heather and Mike's reactions seem even more genuine.
