Continuing on the next phase of the machinist vice. Set-up and indicating on 45 degrees, and using a slitting saw to machine the reliefs into the corners, all done on the K&T milling machine.
Be sure to check out Brad's KZfaq channel for more updates on the entire collaboration soon. He's the one who organized this and will be compiling a list of all the contributors videos once they start posting them. / basementshopguy

After heat treatment all the tolerances of sufaces will be jambled up again and need to be grinded back into precision.. After watching this whole WIYB series I can tell you that having this vice will be a prize possesion in your workshop..Really impressed by all the labour and thinking that has gone into this tool by the many fine professional toolmakers.

Wheel cutters and arbor set up used to be some of my favorite machining. We had "good" vices for the delicate work and as they loosened up were given to the roughing mills. Can't beat Kurt vices. We always kept one new in the tool crib and as they were used a new one was ordered. We were slow on work at one time so we reworked some of the older vices by grinding the surfaces and replacing the screws and movable jaws so we didn't hurt the shops budget so often. Good work as usual. JHolland MiddleGa

We have 2 stores up here in Maine, owned by the same guy, Liberty Tool and The Tool Barn. You would have an absolute field day in them. He buys estates and sells all the tools, at discount prices. All the good stuff, Starret, Mitutoyo, Brown&Sharp all the others, some new, some old. 3 floors of tools! I usually make a day off it. Keep up the good work! 👍

After thinking about it... (something I rarely do, let alone have the time to), it looks like you could have used the slitter on that very last cut by putting the knubby end up. You still would need some major height changes, but the setup should still be the same. Beautiful work as always, and I love seeing video 2 after SNS. :-D

nice video, good to see the K&T in action. BTW it rarely hurts to go a bit deeper than you think necessary on those reliefs. They are not just there for the initial surface grinding, but also for in 5 or 10 or 30 or even 75 yrs time when someone wants to clean up the faces, since that voice should easily last 100yrs.

Good show, but Usually the radius in the slot is for heat treat.To stop the stresses from concentrating in the corner causing cracks. I usually put a corner relief groove in after heat treat with an abrasive disk. After heat treat it doesn't matter.

Unless I,m mistaken your saw arbor is a left hand lock thread.Yes/No if thats so your cutter is on wrong.Safety reasons you should always cut with lock direction.Your cutting against the lock which means it can unlock itself when cutting.You have been lucky but it will come back and bit you on bum eventually

Nice set up Adam & great comments throughout the cut, interesting to see what the extra load was as you approached that shoulder, man that mill just kept on cutting, I thought there might have been a little bucking there or at least a change in resonance but no no. wouldn't mind an extreme case of what happens when your milling from light to heavy cuts in one pass & what to listen for Just wondering bud, I bet there's some action & tool pressure to consider. For this one you nailed the SPEEDS & FEEDS 👍

+abom79 Very nice setup there Adam. One good reason to use a radius cutter on relief slots like that is that radius cutters are a lot more durable, however I don't see that affecting the performance of this vise in any way. I noticed you put Stan's squares to good use as well, nice.
@Abom79

Yes, if I would have had the correct radiu cutter I would have used it, but I checked with both Tom and Stan and all there vises have square cut reliefs so I went with it.

Hi Adam, I'm trying to keep track of the fixes that need to happen in the drawing. Apologies! Not sure if the solid few clearance was in the original print or something I introduced when I redrew everything. I'll make sure to get all of the "fixes" incorporated before we post the prints for everyone to use. Sure cool watching how well the K&T handles those cuts. Was it really that smooth and quiet or did the microphones not pick up on the noise? Hope all is well and talk again soon! Tom Z

Adam, love your vids but have a question. How did you indicate or measure your depth of cut to be the same on each side? How did you know you placed the work piece the same in the vise each time. Hope you understand my question.Jerry Halcomb
@Abom79
@Abom79 8 жыл бұрын
+Jerry Halcomb I had the bottom corner of the vice sitting on the bed of the Kurt vice. Once I was on center for the first side, flipping it 180 it should still be on center since I indicated both sides in on 45*. I visually inspected the touch off and both appeard to be the same. I also fed in the same depth for each side. I don't think the placement of the relief has to be dead nuts in the center for something like this, but I know i was damn near.

Hey Adam, what's the purpose of undercuts like that? I've seen them in V-blocks as well. Are they for chip clearance to keep debris out of tight corners?
@Abom79

They are mainly for grinding needs, allowed the wheel to get all the way into the center, or up close to and edge.

Nice work mate.Hope you dont mind me asking .Is that a left hand thread on you stub arbor? Yes/No?Looks to me your tightening the arbor to LEFT.If thats correct you have should have reversed the direction of spindle and put cutter on so it revolvesA/Clockwise.Practice is always cut with lock,Your cutting against the lock.So the cutter can become loose when cutting.In short its a left hand thread on arbor.So you should have the force of cut going same way.You havnt its really bad practice-Sorry but I know I have been doing this 40+yrs

Since you are only cutting a relief groove, could you make the angle lower ( 40 or 35 , whatever ) and not chop off the corner of the vise jaw area ? I would try to avoid removing metal where it could / should be left intact. No reason slot HAS TO BE 45 degrees is there ?
@experiencingtechnicaldiffi5184
@experiencingtechnicaldiffi5184 8 жыл бұрын
