This is the first episode in a short series that will be about machining the main body of a tool makers vice. This vice is part of a collaboration with several other guys on KZfaq. I will be machining the main vice body while others will be machining the other parts. Once all parts are finished it will be heat treated and surface ground to final size. It will then be hand delivered to Keith Fenner for his annual What's In Your Box giveaway.
Follow along as we find a vice buried inside this old piece of alloy steel that's been laying around my shop for decades.
I will later be posting links to others KZfaq channels who are a part of this build.
This is also the very first job I do on the newly repaired Kearney & Trecker milling machine.
Thanks guys,
Adam

I, like you Adam, am proud to be part of Keith's program of bringing new talent to the Machinist trade . This is a trade that makes a country strong , We need new young blood in many technical trades to make America strong once again . We have all the lawyers and stock brokers we need. we need so many in the technology & medical field that are being skipped over for the big buck jobs. All of the You-tube group, I feel are feeling the same.

Adam, Make sure that ball is low enough that the work can't roll. Also when I was at Boeing we had " roughing face mills" for the real knarly materials and "finish cutters" to complete the job with. It made for a better finish. Now would be a good time to use your surface plate and a good square to see if you are indeed "square". I made all the parts for one of these in my mill class, the only difference being the fixed jaw is bolted in and can be rotated around and I'll maybe machine a feature in one side eventually. Definitely a fun project. Nice thing about making all the parts is that you can fit them like a 1911 slide. Butter smooth! I left the jaws a light press fit and used some lapping compound used at work to polish tool steel and ceramic to get them to slide on just perfectly.

Hi Adam greatings from Holland i like yout conventional machining, i have about 22 years experiance with conventional milling and turning. In your video you came up with the cut ball bearing wich i like a lot. now you where milling that peace of square steel. i have a shorter way to get the length on 90 degr to the 4 faces with hss mill on the Y axe. offcourse cut it like you did the 4 faces clean but when you get to the length part you only have to clean a 1/2 inch depth with hss mill, clean the surface. then return to your flat inserts cutter the one you used to get it square, place the square steel product on a small but even peace at the bottum of the vice at the fixed jaw. place the steel strait up,clamp it , cut it clean, now you finish on all sides 90 degrees, turn the steel 180 degrees in the vice and mill it to dementions of your drawing. done! benefits are less wear on hss tools. hope you understand my poor explanetion

Hey Adam, Pretty cool that shell cutter. I use to set them inserts in a optical comparator, measuring all these slots, and all these inserts, to find the best fit. On a shell like this, the length should be within .0003 inch. But the OD could be off a bit. If the finish is good on your cut, the noise you heard probably came from the eccentricity of the OD. It can be corrected by swapping every second insert with the opposite side. It should reduce the noise and vibrations, and make a better cut.
@Abom79
@Abom79 8 жыл бұрын
+Martin Goudreau The cutter is so beat up I busted an insert tonight trying to really push it. I need to hold off and just use this for the lighter cuts. I'm hoping to get a 2" shell mill holder and use that big 6" soon. Thanks for the tips Martin.

Hey Adam…good video. as always. We've got a couple milling cutters in the shop I work in that cut the same way. Either they aren't fitted to the holder squarely or just plain sloppy-fit but they work on only half the inserts. Gets annoying after a while. Seems to work out pretty good for you though. I noticed a couple of your videos of Iscar turning tools. They make some real nice milling cutters too. I've been using them for year's. 5 inch cutters using the ADKT style inserts and they are great for hogging off material. Anyway…keep them awesome videos coming …thanks..Mike in Canada.

Adam, great video as always. As far as your cutter not being true, i can agree with that. Another thing I was seeing is that in your final pictures at the end, the scratches post machining are all facing the same direction, the front of the cutting edge going around in a circular pattern, and it matches all the way down the piece. Seeing that one would wonder if your cutting head is on true. It makes me think that its installed slightly cockeyed. Might be something to look into.

I like the idea you had there on being able to save up to help get the shop add-on done. I liked the extra HSS face mill footage on patreon. Will make sure I keep adding it to the videos themselves. It's starting to cool down here, so hopefully can find some more reasons to get out in the shed for some projects without sweating to death. Managed to get a simple connector to fix the broken on-off mechanism on the Johnson bandsaw...I should include the short footage of one of the failures along the way.

Really nice job, which is complicated by the 5 or 6 people or more making the various parts to this vice, OK if like you this is the final grind but there’s a lot to think about, well done to you and all. I know in one of the last WIYB’s a person from the UK where I live was the lucky recipient of a box, or to be more correct many individual ones that made up the whole wonderful gift from knowledgeable Engineers and Part time and Professional Machinists. I hope they realise just how much work went into their many separate pieces! I have said it before, - I wonder if Keith realised what a many headed snake these WIYB would become, though it spreads the knowledgeable camaraderie of the many people kind enough to make the many parts of maybe even more finished machinists tools with some becoming absolutely indispensable and are for continued use?! Thanks for the completed item and for the upload of your work. Take care mrbluenun

Adam, I am glad to see the mill working. That brings back memories, good and not so good. I have three ideas. 1. Way covers, saves in grief and cleanup time. Hot chips + way oil = abrasive carbon slurry. 2. Head crane, saves in setup and aggravation and your back. 3. Gibs, if you haven't touched the crank 2 thou. is a lot of movement. Move table all the way left, lift knee some and lock, zero readout or other indicators, move table all the way right, unlock knee, and see the difference. You can do the same on all three axis and combos. That can tell you a lot about the condition of the ways and gibs and what you need to fix or compensate for. Mike (o\!/o)

Hey Adam, Maybe ? this was already mentioned. If not then I've got zero doubts you'd already know it, but many viewers might not. Rust forms a type of carbide and that means just what any other type of carbide does. It's hard as hell and the last thing you want mixed in with any way oil on the machines moving parts. Just something for the rest of us to keep in mind when machining less than pristine metal. And great to see your K & T fully operational. I've worked with hydraulic equipment for over 40 years now. I think you may have gotten real lucky that whatever the real issues were they weren't far more involved than what you fixed. My best guess is you had a combination of at least 2 faults but you did a fantastic job of figuring out the required solutions. Reboring, sleeveing, and then precision internal grinding spool valve bores is just a f#&*$ing massive pita to be honest. I know K & T along with many others including Cincinnati made some larger Horizontal/Vertical mills than yours is. But your's is still a beast. A Bridgeport might have far more accessories built for it, and it's arguably maybe more versatile. But if my shop floor was concrete, I'd take a hydraulic machine like yous any day. Especially so having both the horizontal and vertical spindles. I am more than envious. Pete

@Abom79 8 жыл бұрын
+Turning Point Nice comments Pete. I don't worry about the rust on any of my machines, they are all old and have wear on them. It'll clean off. But I understand your point. I'm almost positive it was the suction line that has failed.

Hey man, :) If I were the one grinding this, I would lean more to .015" for clean up. With the amount of material being removed, there could be a lot of stress released in heat treat. Easier to take it off than put it on.

Good work Adam. It seems to me the rapid traverse moves really fast when compared to your other machines.

Always enjoy your videos. You're either going to get smaller fingers or Chuck is going to send you a larger screwy ball. You're getting to like that digital read out huh?

Adam, it sounds like that cutter is cutting nicely on the radius, but has one or two teeth hanging low. Why not try indicating up from the table to the bottom of each insert at the lowest point, maybe using a ten thousandths indicator. That should probably tell you if the cutter or the holder are at fault.

Another great video Adam, thanks. Have you talked to Tom Lipton about the grinding work? He picked up a machine not too long ago that he's been working on. Looks like a really nice unit.

Im just getting into machining but i was wonder what would happen if the bandsaw and the stock was under water, it would cool it definity but would it work like would the chips move out of the cut or do you think something else would happen.

Thanks for the videos Adam, they've been very relaxing and enjoyable for me today. We've got heaps of extra folks and furry critters staying with us for the last 3 days due to the massive wildfire that's burning up town after town here only 10-15 miles from our house, so it's been a stressful time and you know how calming I find all of the nice machining videos. Also thanks for sharing your little family fun project with us, and please tell Kevin I said "Thanks for helping Adam move that vice!" It's good to know you've got help when you need it and you've only got one back so treat it kindly ;) Aloha...Chuck

+Knolltop Farms Hey Chuck, it's been disturbing hearing about those wildfires there in Cali. Really sad man. I sure hope you guys get some rain soon! I hope it stears clear of your family farm. Kevin is always around when I need some help. he don't mind, plus I think he's enjoying the YT facetime.

Question: in a large surface cutter like that wouldn't each tooth Being progressively lower in the circle Help in spreading out the forces? Sideways is one cut downward is another. The actual cut will wind up at the lowest Tooth.
