In this video we finish the rough machining of the machinist vise for the toolmakers collaboration. We'll use a stub milling arbor and staggard tooth cutter and cut mill the pockets on the each end of the vise for use with hold downs.
I'll finish out the video with some final words, and a slide show recap of the entire job.
I was really honored to be a part of this big project! It wasn't just this vise, but many tools and time donated by many individuals all across the world. Soon after this video we will see all of these tools come together and shown on Keith Fenner's channel, and be part of his Whats In Your Box Toolbox giveaway.
We will be posting links to more videos later as others upload them. Brad Jacob will be listing them all once they are all uploaded and I will link them then.
Thanks to all of my viewers, and supporters! You guys are awesome!
Regards,
Adam

Thank you Adam. That was some great words! And thank you so much for being a part of this amazing collaborative effort. When this started as an idea, it seemed so far off. To watch this vise come together, was one of the highlights of the year. I hope we do some more collaborative stuff soon!

That's one right pretty bit of machining there Adam! Whoever gets this is going to have a great tool! Trivia section: How deep to feed a 4" cutter to get a 2.410" wide notch? You can do this with some fairly simple math. The cutter is 4" so its radius is 2". The width of the cut is 1.410. Split this in half: 1.205. Draw a triangle. The hypotenuse is 2" (radius of the cutter) and one leg is 1.205 (half the width of cut). For a triangle with sides A, B, and C, A squared plus B squared = C squared. So squared + 1.205 squared = 2 squared. Rearranging and squaring, 4 - 1.452 = 2.548. The square root of 2.548 is 1.596. Almost done: 1.596 is the distance from the center of the cutter to the face of the part when you are deep enough. So the cutter must be 2 - 1.596 = 0.4038" deep into the part. The 0.410 you got by eyeballing the calipers is darn close to exact! After you do the math its always good to check it by eye and not completely trust the math; its just too easy to mess up on the math!

As a graduate of the GE Apprentice Machinist Program twenty something years ago, this brings back some memories. I haven't done any machining since then, but it reminds me of how much fun it was to turn raw steel into something beautiful and useful. Thanks.

If, twenty years ago, you had said that you were going to make a machinist's vise in pieces in California, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida, Texas and I don't know where else, and it will all fit together at the end, I would have said you were dreaming or at least using very illegal drugs. But there it is. And it will fit. Internet machining project. And a hat tip to UPS and even the USPS, who make shipping cheap and easy. And a double or triple hat tip to Keith Fenner for starting the WIYB thing in the first place. Very, very, well done. And on another note, it is a real pleasure watching that K&T slicing steel like butter. Thanks for posting.

I'm almost sad to see this end. I think it is my favorite series of all your videos. It gives me a really warm feeling knowing all this hard work and care is going to someone who deserves it. For those of you who wonder about calculating the depth of cut, here is how: A circle whose center is on the origin of a graph (the point (0,0)) is described by the equation x^2 + y^2 = r^2, where r is the radius of the circle. So for any given y coordinate there are exactly 2 x coordinates (one positive and one negative). Imagine drawing a circle on a graph with the center being on the origin. Now cut a vertical slice off the right side of the circle, that slice is the cut we make into the vise. Half of the slice is on the positive side of the graph (above the axis), and half on the negative (below the axis). So we want half the width of our cut, or 2.410 /2 = 1.205, since the cutter is 4", r = 2 (the radius). Now just plug in and solve for x. x^2 + y^2 = r^2 x^2 + 1.205^2 = 2^2 x^2 = 2^2 - 1.205^2 x = +/-sqrt(4 - 1.205^2) x = +/-1.5962, we discard the negative value. This is the distance from the origin to the slice, we want the distance from the outside of the circle to the face of the slice, so just subtract that figure from 2 (our radius). 2 - 1.5962 = .4037 Adam cut to .410 which is about 1 thou oversize after taking into account the 5 thou that is to be ground off. In other words, pretty much dead on.

I can't help but comment. Abom79 your work was exceptional and I enjoyed the series; however, consider the final user and the tremendous benefit of having a vise that actually works and the life will be no less than 50 years. Amazing. I did not get involved with machining until very late in life and do recognize the value of a new tool that does not have to be repaired.Cullman, Al

What an excellent piece of your craftsmanship, and I will admit to being a bit jealous of whoever is going to receive it, even if I'm certain that it will get many more years of use...proper use, by the winner of the give away. It's just a one of a kind that no amount of money could ever buy, and that just makes it even more special than it already is. That lump of steel story always gives me a lump in my throat knowing that bit of the history you shared. OK, sorry about the mushy stuff, I appreciate all of the videos and the SNS too.
