WMVT 36/WHA 21/WMVS 10 MPTV PBS Sign Off December 2000

PBS channels WMVT (channel 36 Milwaukee), WMVS (channel 10 Milwaukee) and WHA (channel 21 Madison) sign off for the night December 2000. I also included the Jack Horkheimer special talking about the stars on New Year's Eve 2000. The WMVT/WMVS sign offs show a view of east downtown Milwaukee with the Firstar Bank (now US Bank) tower from Lake Michigan while at the end a creepy guy whispers "Goodnight. Goodnight. Everybody, everybody. Goodnight."

WMVS 10 and WMVT 36 are local Milwaukee PBS channels broadcasted over the air while WHA 21 (Wisconsin Public Television) was only available in Milwaukee on Time Warner Cable channel 21 and later moved from basic cable to a digital channel then later removed altogether. I am not sure if 21 was the station it was broadcasted over the air in Madison locally though.

The song (Including the whisper) is indeed “Good Night” by The Beatles. I used to watch these all the time. WMVS and WMVT always had a dramatic noise that would trigger the transmitter to shut off. WMVS also usually put on Star Gazer to fill time before sign off. The timing (at night) and length (Short) made it a great last program of the day.

i wondered if that tone was a signal to tell the transmitter to dump carrier. Sometimes though there was quite a long delay between the tone can carrier dropping

You are not lying. And the whisper goodnight was the perfect send off into gentle dreamy waters all while passin out on the couch. That was the short and sweet asmr.

I think in Madison, WHA-TV did broadcast on channel 21. Of course WMVS and WMVT are not affiliated with WI Public TV, sort of akin to WTVI channel 42 in Charlotte, NC not being a part of that state's PBS system which has a Charlotte affiliate.

New Orleans, Louisiana is the exact same way. The local PBS affiliate, WYES, is separate from the Louisiana Public Broadcasting(LPB) network, which runs the remaining stations through the Louisiana ETV Authority (LETA). That said, up until the mid 1980s, the In-School service for WYES was linked through the LETA network, making WYES a “secondary” member of the network. This ended sometime after 1984, when WLAE (now an independent that’s partially owned by the LETA) signed on the air, with the purpose of providing LPB programming into the New Orleans market, well, at least the LPB Programming that DID NOT air on WYES, to New Orleans.
