My mate had about 2.3 Bitcoin he collected in like 2012 then he forgot about it. He tried to find his wallet a couple of years back when Bitcoin went way up in price, but he couldn't find the exchange thing or the website where his wallet was kept so now it's gone forever.

This reminds me of the same stupidity I've done. I've invested in Pirate Chain when it was nearly $0.01 it skyrocketed up to $16 and guess what? I didn't have a x64 bit pc back then and the only wallet they had was a x64 bit version. I had to keep it in my exchange account. After two years my uncle called me and told me "You've made me rich my man", I checked out the price it was $16, Unfortunately the exchange had delisted the coin 1 year before that and I couldn't have access to my assets. I've made $200k but couldn't take it out. What a shame, it just doesn't worth the same anymore

Not your key, not your crypto as always remains the most relevant statement you could make. Unfortunately while keeping your coins on an exhange is fine during bull market a bear market and a recession will destroy many different exchanges including top ones too so just in case its always a good idea to get your coins out of the exchange into your wallet. No matter if you have a cold storage like Ledger or Hot storage like Trust Wallet it is objectively better to keep them there instead of an exchange especially durign times like these.
