Quebec did the same thing as B.C. is now doing, but perhaps not on the same scale. Habitat loss is the primary reason Caribou are disappearing. You cannot give out cutting permits right and left on the forests which the Caribou need to use to survive. I witnessed little calves with heavy collars put around their necks, just stumbling around after their mothers here in Quebec. In B.C from the air and from the water, I saw fringes of trees left standing along the highways, but behind vast amounts of clear cutting was taking place. Habitat loss is the greatest threat to Caribou and both governments know it, but the scapegoat, as usual, are the predators.

Northern Wisconsin use to have a healthy deer population. Now that we have wolves, deer hunters are seeing more wolves than deer. Some areas can't handle wolves, that's why we have hunting seasons, to keep populations in check. Wolves are fine by me, just as long as they are kept in check just like deer, turkeys, ducks, geese, coyotes, elk, etc.

The wolf will not eat itself out of food. It is far wiser about what it needs than we are and fooling ourselves into thinking that we know best will only lead to another species being wiped out. Try reading a bit about ecosystems that were dying and by reintroducing the wolf those ecosystems are healthy and surviving. I hunt deer, but I also understand and appreciate the balance that nature has between predators and prey. Remove the wolf and you destroy an ecosystem.

From BC to the Yukon, The wolves are having a devastating effect on animals that people need to live everyday. Subsistence living by many tribes is in danger of becoming a thing of the past. Meaning people will have to leave their ancient homes and hunting grounds because the wolf packs are getting too big. Caribou and Moose populations have dropped down to almost nothing causing tribes to have to travel farther and farther, with no guarantee of being able to feed their families. Add to that the overfishing by Commercial fleets and fisherman for Salmon is indeed troubling. Where do these people turn for help? A way of life will soon be a thing of the past. Once subsistence living is wiped out, it will never return!

I agree completely, we pushed the wolves into these areas to cut down on our livestock losses, but now, the large amounts of predators are going into areas that were once not nearly as densley populated with predators, this makes a problem and we need to cull the wolf poulation down, so that both populatios can thrive. Thats how nature works, but when we intervene, we can't do a half job ad ruin the ecosystem, we have to mae it balanced again, and to all of you who will say why did the wolves get pushed there? Its called expansion and population growth, and until people stop having children, which I am totaly not recommending, we will keep growing and pushing other animals out of their habitats and into others habitats.

They should save both by culling the wolves (not all of them) and protecting the caribou. But if I had to pick one to go extinct it would be wolves as the countless prey species are more important than one predator species. We can fix what is lost with wolves but not what is lost with caribou or rabbits
@Bob_Adkins
@Bob_Adkins 4 жыл бұрын
Thousands of years ago, wolves were prey to to other now extinct animals, and their numbers were kept in check. Man took over that role starting probably 10,000 years ago until recently. Wolves have always had to breed prolifically to survive. Their predators are gone, but their reproductive rate is still very high. If we allow them to become overpopulated, they will eat every single deer, moose, elk, and caribou within a few short years. Other great predators like puma, lynx, bobcat, and bear will also suffer because of wolf overpopulation.

@@Bob_Adkins Wipe out species? Do you mean, wipe out populations in some areas? Wiping out a whole species is very serious. I am an EnvironmentL Engineer, which I realize is mostly irrelevant, but I do have a strong desire to help protect nature, wildlife, and wildlife habitat and minimize further habitat destruction or even loss. I have studied animal psychology and behavior including wolves, but am by no means an expert. Not even close. I’m still learning, with much to learn yet. I want to help promote solutions with the least damage to all involved. Just starting to gather information. I’ve been living outside of Canada for 12 years, but plan to move to northern BC this year if possible. Lots of wildlife there.

@@ShikokuFoodForest Hi NVCL, I'm with you. Not saying everything will go extinct, but canids breed so prolifically and successfully that they will put extreme pressure on vulnerable species if their numbers are allowed to go unchecked. Who knows how many extinct species went extinct because of an unusual boom in the wolf population? Some want wolves completely untouched, and others want them completely gone. I'm in the middle, believing that populations have to be kept very low to allow native prey species to maintain historic and prehistoric levels. Sounds like you are about to embark on a very exciting and rewarding journey in BC!

Wolves now have a super highway to their prey, thanks to man. A journey which would take a pack, several days to complete, now takes several hours. Prey species have no time to recover, or move on; the wolves a right there with them, decimating their numbers. It’s solely due to man’s interference, that these wolves are now in danger. Logging roads, recreational trails, snow mobiles etc, have created these super highways, making it so easy for wolves to hunt, anything, and everything. The wolf population needs to be managed, if true diversity to remain.

Predator is strong in numbers game are in short supply lots of hungry wolves mean every herd is weak by numbers or population.

Once the wolves have killed all the Caribou, hunger will drive them to find another food source. The first to go will be pets, children and anyone else who they can catch off guards. It's a tough choice when you have to choose between people, their kid and wolves. If something isnt done now, they will turn to alternative food sources (people) then they all of the wolves will be completely and totally exterminated.

Farmers are the most effective for hunting them they can wait at night by the cows because there's no wild animals left so they take cows down every night. I spoke with huge ranch owners. @@tballstaedt7807 By preventing animals from going extinct, we're stopping evolution. Survival of the fittest is appropriate here. Some of those wolves have been introduced into the Western States of the U.S. and they have exploded in number and are at this moment decimating the Elk and Deer populations in Montana, Wyoming and everywhere else they have introduced the Canadian wolf population over here in this country. You ask any hunter in the western states how much the species that was introduced in their areas have affected their numbers of large game animals and you will find an almost total agreement that the species should never have been brought into the U.S. They are not indigenous to that area to begin with so in essence the Gov't. entity that did it was breaking both Federal and State laws about introducing invasive species into this country. They need to control an apex predator when they start getting out of hand and now it's not just the wildlife but the ranchers and farmers are starting to pay for the bad judgement.

However like all animals sometimes things get out of hand and the balance of nature gets out of hand. Human visitation has helped wolf numbers for years and as a results the population is thriving but at the cost of the Caribou. Just like how when coyote populations threaten the deer this needs to be addressed. If you love wolves I can’t blame you I do too their amazing animals but they do need to be managed to keep the environment balanced.

In Australia they cull sharks for killing humans and there's huge protests against that. It's just a strange observation,I don't support either nor am I against hunting either in controlled programs. I just find it strange compared to wolves I'd say sharks are more dangerous yet more will protest their killing.
