Thanks for this exploration! Ive always wondered what the front camera looked like! Ive thought of possibly relocating a front camera to the third brake light area of my truck for an up high wide view of the rear when driving. Then mount the rear camera in the bumper facing lower, that would only be activated in reverse or by using my rear parking sensors (that way, it only switches to that low view if something is detected in the way, like another cars bumper etc). These are the kind of things i day dream all day long. Lol!

Ah you didn't hear it from me, but I was recently shown new product that does something very close to what you described, I can't say much besides that but I think it can potentially change the way we approach the rear view of a vehicle as far a monitoring, stay tuned for that review. Thanks for your recent Wofbox G840H I decided to finally let my vantop rest in peace and purchase the wolfbox. In that vantop I managed to replace the MiniUSB with a frankenstain USB-C (not without damaging the parking signal traces) but something that I made was to re place the big battery with a tiny GPS battery which is only 170mAh, just enough to save the video after power off. It is really sturdy, and very safe due to its minimal size.

Ah very interesting approach, yeah I had some viewers replace their connectors or what could be done (and I think another viewer did this) is soldering the power cable directly to the board eliminating the connector altogether. Clever idea too on the smaller battery, thanks for sharing. Cheers!

8:34 BTW. That daughter board is a voice recognition board that allows voice commands in the camera... I never used it

Good video. Please review other mirror cams with teardowns. I'd particularly be interested in the Android versions they're running and if OTA updates are included.

Thank you copperblue! Ah yes more teardowns coming, stay tuned. Regarding the OS, most mirror dash cams use some form of Linux based OS, there are a few out there that run on Android (primarily to enable Android Auto and CarPlay) but those are not very common since they have large drawbacks. Basically when you begin to use them you realize how difficult is to have Android Auto or Carplay in a split view on your review mirror screen. The rear view camera is now very small in size making visibility more difficult and having to look up to your mirror for directions on a very small screen since the screen size is halved between the rear view and maps is extremely counterproductive. On top of that if you play music on your car from your Phone that functionality is lost since now the music will come from the mirror LOL But that has just been my experience and the feedback I got from others that tried them, I'm sure there is someone out there who is ok with all their compromises. This is awesome!! Would like to see a g900 teardown if you can get hold of one. As the most reputable member of the community looking into this, I would love you to expose the false advertising of the rear camera specs these companies, including wolfbox, are currently dishing out. Every brand that makes these mirror dash cams with a 2.5k rear camera modules is falsely claiming the output is actually 2.5k, when they all use analog AHD Pal cables into the mirror unit. Not one brand actually employs the true digital output of these 2.5k rear cameras, with them ALL being downscaled to 1080p or even 720p analog video. This applies not just to the rear live view display feed, but also to the recorded footage from these rear cameras. The saved rear footage is converted down to >= 1080p analog video, then digitally encoded into a 2.5k video file, so the video file will show at 2.5k resolution when the video quality is barely 1080p at best. I do understand that 2.5 downscaled to 1080/720 is better then native 1080/720, but it's also not 2.5k video as claimed. Kind of a random rant at these business, but I'm now realizing this is very obviously false advertising and misinformation from the various companies making these mirror dashcams, and something I haven't seen anyone else mention yet.

Hi Pingo and thank you! Yep, current dash cams use AHD 2.0 for the rear camera signal and that standard is limited to FHD. Not long ago the same company that developed AHD announced that they have began working on AHD 3.0 which will support higher resolutions (however considering 2.0 took years to be released, it will be a while for us to see 3.0), so once that standard comes out, we will eventually see dash cam manufacturers began to use at some point in the future (which I don't see coming any time soon). @@AlexAutoFun Thanks for responding! That's very interesting info! Their custom service team explained how my units runs 1080 AHD standard then back tracked claiming it was still 2.5k! I can't see why they don't just run digital video feed from the rear cam into the mirror to utilize the full resolution of the rear cam that's already included. My guess would be it exceeding the processing power and buffer of the main unit and/or issues with signal loss over the longer cable length? Keen to know your thoughts

Hi Pingo! Yeah it's definitely a combination of several factors. While there are dash cams that use a mini HDMI, USB-C and other proprietary connectors they all use AHD, which I do think is related to latency, transmission length, size of the decoding and encoding unit and cost (AHD receivers are tiny and cheap). But like all technologies I think if there is enough demand for it, then it will happen. Right now, most dash cams are staying with 1080p for the rear as there is low perceived demand for higher resolution for the rear (there is the belief that car crashes mostly come from the front not sure if this is statically correct but that is why single channel dash cams are popular) Where dual channel dash cams have to battle single channel dash cams for a sale and 3 channel dash cams are the least sold from what I can tell. So as you can imagine the market is what drives new products, I think if dual channel dash cam overtake single channel dash cams, then dual channel dash cams will have to evolve to compete but I guess only time will tell! lol Cheers!@@pingopete

This definately makes sense, my guess is just lack of demand right now, I think to really push forwards the tech we need one company to step up and truly push this forwards with a much improved model, that should force the other brands to follow suit. Regarding the rear cameras, this is true but also dumb because it doesn't account for the mirror cameras that really constantly on the rear camera footage. I will admit I am probably one of only a few that care but to me having a high quality rear feed is just as important and especially so if this rear feed is supposed to replace my own eyesight with a traditional mirror! I'm having dumb dreams now of starting a company to develop a new modular system with plug and play camera options for 1, 2 and 3 can setups and easy upgrading. An oled 60fps mirror display with good 60fps video feed from the rear would be absolutely amazing. Super cool to see how much you engage with your audience! Nice work :)

I think those 10inch mirrors are the smallest, also I think those are a good standard size for mirrors. Maybe you can check the dimensions to see if it is ok for what you need.

Thank you Thomas! Ah the T10 is about 10" which is the current smallest mirror dash cam size available. However... there is one in development that was recently shown to me that is smaller, I could not take pictures or measurements since it's a preproduction model but looked like maybe 9" super slick and has one crazy feature I have not seen before on any other dash cam. Hi, why did the battery pumped up? Is it dangerous to use it during hot weather?

Hi IG! It's believed that some lithium batteries bloat due to gas build up, as a result of exposure to high temperatures or due to battery aging or due to being overcharged (or charged while hot) or a combination of any of this conditions. Here is the Vantop one that also failed kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fr1ondST0cXFqYk.html and yes if the bag ruptures a fire is very possible since oxygen reacts strongly with the gases inside the battery. What is the best android auto smart mirror carplay? My car has a back up cam so just need Android auto

Hi Winter! Ah unfortunately I have not found a mirror dash cam with Carplay or Android auto that I like. They are somewhat rare and the few that are out there have so far not convince me that it makes sense to have Carplay or android auto on them. The rearview becomes very limited since the screen splits in 2 to have the camera and Carplay in the mirror at the same time and I personally found it uncomfortable to look up to see a map in a tiny screen than using my phone (mounted on a phone holder). But eventually if there is more demand for this (so far is very little) I will probably review one of the channel. Cheers!
