When I get attacked by aircraft, I raise the snorkel while I crash dive. It lets the diesels drive the uboat deeper faster before they have to switch to batteries

Whenever this series ends I will miss the "Auf Tauchstationen!" (11:20). The Snorkel can really make the difference between life and death in the future months. Try to stay alive. Your last mission in April 1945 should be to sail and put the ship on the shores of Brazil or some Caribbean island (hopefully not old British or French colony) of your choosing. Somewhere they will treat some retired naval hero with dignity!

Interestingly the "snort" had a valve at the top to prevent sea water from entering the boat. It worked but the intake was closed as the swell passed over it and the diesel engine had to get air from somewhere so it sucked down the pressure in the boat which was very disconcerting for the crew! This would happen over and over. At least they could recharge without having such a big radar cross section on the surface. I would also like to suggest recharging at night at silent speed so the wake from the snort is practically eliminated, and any hunting aircraft is going to need to also have the "Leigh light" (a very powerful searchlight underslung the aircraft) to spot your snort. ( Can't wait for the type 21, I have a 1.25 meter model of U_2540)

To me the boat looks naked without a deck gun. Realize the snorkel is more beneficial but will miss the deck gun attacks. More true to what the reality was.

Corrections: Allied merchant ships in 1944 were heavily armed, not heavily armoured. The US was focused on building cheap Liberty ships in huge quantities, and armour plate was expensive. Having external torpedoes did not compromise the hull integrity of the U-boat itself, because they were stored outside of the pressure hull. However, each torpedo is a mini submarine in itself - so torpedoes also have their own crush depth. Dive too deep with external torpedoes loaded, and the torpedoes would be damaged, even to the point of making them inoperable.

You have knowledge. If explosives, like in a torpedo goes deep enough will compression set off the explosive ? In the Army we were told NEVER to hammer on 'plastic explosives'

Well, I sure hope you survive the war. My last mission was literally last. Only managed to sink a freighter and a fishing boat before being damaged by bombing. Headed back to Bergen, but sustained further damage by running aground. Handed the boat over to the dockyard personnel, but the war ended before it was ready for sea again. According to my little SHIII commander biography, I passed away in 1990.

I’m watching this again rn and I really love the score you’ve got in the background of the intro. Really conveys the jangled nerves and constant paranoia you’d be feeling as a U-boat Kaleun at this point in the war. Great world-building details! Definitely a more reserved Wolfpack than the one before the loss of those five brave men several months ago.

I am so happy people are still playing this game. I like your videos. You have a huge knowledge on the subject, which makes your videos interesting for history buffs like me. Also you (almost) never expose your crew to unnecessary risk. You carefully plan and handle your attacks.

You probably know that, but one easy way to fix the "flak gunner won't shoot" problem is to go to each station then back to the bridge using the shortcut keys, F>F4 > T>F4 > G>F4. If you cycle the stations with the F11 only the last station you were at will shoot at the planes, also, sometimes you need to manually point them more or less where the enemy is, the AI sometimes won't look at the enemy if they are more than 90º from their vision center.

Finally iv'e catched up with the series!!!!! On the Flak gun issue back in patrol 7... i do think your sailors didn't fired the guns because they were already damaged (after the bombs hitted only one machinegun kept shooting)

Yeaah finally!! Great to see the series back! I'm just gonna kinda copy-paste my previous comment about using the radar. I think, if the aircrafts are detecting you anyway, and the metox doesn't always do it's job I think that using radar is going to help, as it may just let you know of anything closing in on you

1944 my favorite year to play SH3. However you're pretty lucky, I receive air attacks constantly, and by 8-10 planes (when I'm close to England), then they call to DDs

I have just started playing this game on Steam, the first mission is at the very beginning of the war, and talk about a long patrol with those early U-boats, only have 3 forward tubes and only reloads for 2 of the tubes...lol

Anonymous : Interesting, I didn’t know that. On the environmental front, I suspect that if the Nazis were still running things, the German government definitely wouldn’t have abandoned nuclear power in favour of keeping their dirty coal fired power stations running. That would have made the air sweeter to breathe in Germany, that’s for sure - not to mention reducing C02 emissions.

Just an FYI - the Snorkel should discharge the exhaust under the water, that’s partially what causes the wake. Later versions of submarine snorkels have mushroom shaped diffusers to minimize the bubble size/wake.

serch theres a fix for all snorkel to smoke. Its independent to the model used stock/hires/GUC, the only flow its that smoke its trigger in the same way that exaust, so in surface will be smoking the snorkel and the exaustion. But its important and visible from scope too

I'm always use a shnorkel with periscope to control air... Without it aircrafts can attac boat.

The game doesnt use the schnorkel the right way. It was designed to Release the exhaust just below the surface so that the smoke would not be detected.

Something else, since you mentioned it yourself. I really hope you save up Renown and get that Electroboat before the D-Day. Because if you have a chance to score major kills by that day is only in a good ahead-of-its-time XXI! Perhaps you need to do many daring attacks... do freight ships or war ships give more Renown? Consider going for the juicier targets! ;)

I think at late war, they fitted a radar signal detector at the tip of the snorkel. And it made to use it much safer. I may be wrong tho.

Wolfpack I have a good question for you.... Once your spotted by enemy aircraft when your on the surface and you crash dive wouldn't it be best to turn into the aircraft to throw off their bombing run? You'd close the distance quick and throw off the enemies aim wouldn't you? I'm not sure but it seems logical?

SH3 and SH4 are legendary good sub sims. Unfortunately later versions became more arcade style, like the dreadful Uboat. I never tried Uboat, but judging from the videos I can tell, it is not worth my time.

They didn't realize how crazy ASW would get, and started off the war treating submarines as just...long range torpedo boats with a sneaky trick.

Actually it's a Dutch invention. Germany got the technology early in 1940 when they invaded the Netherlands. Dutch nazi elements in the navy basically handed them the whole Dutch submarine fleet anchored. The subs were most used for training. But the embedded snorkel tech was studied.

Also Germany did not need the snorkel until they lost the air superiority. The air battle with England was mostly won by Germany, until by order of Göring they switched from bombing airfields to terror bombing cities. This gave England time to recover and quickly regain air dominance. Thus more and more subs found themselves without air cover and increasing enemy air patrols.

Why was the date on the patrol history at the end of Patrol 7 February 6, 1944, and Patrol 8 is beginning February 2, 1944? I expected a long stay in port for all the repairs, but it turns out you left on your next patrol even before you got back from the previous one!

I'm slowly catching up on this series and just wanted to ask here so it gets seen better. SH3 seems like a PITA to get working, is SH4 any better? I grew up close by to U-505 and I'd love to be able to command a Type IXC U-boat across the dangerous seas.

Sh4 is certainly easier to mod. There is a good mod called Dark Waters which allows you to play as a Uboat in the Atlantic.

@@Wolfpack345 I actually got vanilla SH3 on Steam working just fine without any tweaking (or the Naval Academy, anyway. Haven't touched career mode yet). I'm just struggling with the controls now. I'm too used to WASD being movement and I accidentally keep diving lol! Also, is there a way to change the sensitivity of movement or at least change it to the mouse rather than the arrow keys? Trying to aim the deck gun with the arrow keys is next to impossible.

Well, I'm all caught up now! :D Figured out how to use the mouse, but...now I'm stuck on using the map to like set a course and such and using the given tools, and also firing torpedoes...the game doesn't tell you how to do any of it. The torpedo tutorial video says "just lock on the enemy ship and fire away" but it doesn't account for speed at all. So how do I compensate for speed, and how can I aim my torpedoes manually? It would be really nice to have a comprehensive series of tutorials...

Is there a way to have the remaining German surface fleet join you on your war patrol? The Gneisenau or Scharnhorst can take out the escorts while you take out the merchant ships.

Scharnhorst was sunk in December 1943. Gneisenau was hit by an air raid while in drydock, and her turrets were removed. The ship would never sail again. So yeah, not only not possible with SH3 but also impossible historically.

In 1944, Nazi Germany had lots of brats (Hitler Youth) but very little wurst (sausage). But even Adolf Hitler, now commonly regarded in the West as the #1 most evil man in all of human history, wasn't evil enough to turn children into sausages to feed his soldiers...

The story of the U-Boat war is one of wasted opportunities. Germany could have had the Type XXI as early as 1939. With the XXI, and fully functioning torpedoes, the British most likely would have lost the war. Instead, the Nazi leadership stuck with the Type VII and Type IX. Even the Type XVII hydrogen peroxide subs could have been in service by 1939.

Having studied WW2 for about 15 years, I don't think anything the U-boats could offer would stop the Allies. Any advantages the Type XXI and XVII offered would be quickly mitigated by the cracking of Enigma and tougher ASW efforts in general. If these U-boats existed at the beginning of the war, the Allies would work just that much harder to fight against them. Plus, you have the advantage of numbers. Every U-boat lost is one that can't easily be replaced. But once America joins the war with its infinite manufacturing power, you sink one merchant ship and four more take its place.
