What is Silent Hunter III?

Diary of a u-boat navigator: February 13th, 1945 The last few days since our last attack have been quite boring. We just listened warships as they moved around. One nice thing was that i got to see Dover from our periscope. While the moment was short, it was quite nostalgic as i remembered when back in december of 1941 we got to see New York while we were sailing near the US coast during operation Drumroll, it was quite the sight seeing the lights of New York, but those times are long gone. Still, i enjoyed the sight of Dover and the smoke that the factories produced in it. Another fun moment was today when our captain became so bored that he decided to attack a lone british warship. The explosion of the torpedo caused a wave of pure joy that spred through the entire crew of our boat. While it is an insignificant victory, the simbolic act of a submarine sinking it's worst enemy was so big for our crew. Perhaps by sinking that destroyer, we potentialy saved a fellow submarine crew that was patroling in these waters. Still, the enemy will not take this loss lightly and will probably try harder to find and sink us while we pass the Kanal. It will be quite the ride.... February 21st, 1945 After days of listening to enemy warships passing over us, today we finnaly passed through the Kanal. It was quite a task for me during the last 10 days as i had to carefully guide the boat so that it does not hit a mine. I guess i did well seeing as we are not on the bottom of the sea. Still, I am glad we passed through the enemy jaws and left unharmed. Now i hope that we will stick to the west of Ireland and perhaps avoid further luck pushing, we already did that enough times in this boat. (A shorter story for a shorter video, hope you liked it. One thing that i relate to in this video is the stress of avoiding mines because soon i will have to navigate the minefield of upcoming academic tests. I hope i will pass them all and that one of them won't take me down under :). Anyway, see ya all next time).

Ive had some interesting events happen with those homing torpedoes, usually hits the prop and pings off backwards at high speed then reaquires and strikes the ship. Hilarious and terrifying when it flings itself back at you

Fun fact, I live in Folkestone which you can see just below Dover on the game map at the start. I often walk the cliffs to Dover looking out over the channel, there are shells of bunkers and gun emplacements all over the place. I'm looking forward to normality when you can hop on a ferry at Dover as a foot passenger and cross the channel to Calais for the day, something I've done many times. Costs about £18 for a return ticket.

Man, that Type XXI is definitely OP, just like you said, but it's true to life, right? I think the Germans only operated two of these bad boys during the war, and I don't recall either of them having sunk any ships, although one of them was about to pull the trigger on the 4th of May right when the call for ceasefire came in. Talk about lucky timing for the cruiser they were about to sink!

I only now notice: there is some land that shouldn’t be there: only one of two big polders had been created in the Netherlands at the time of WOII. The developers didn’t even look at a map of the period. Here in the Netherlands the coastline changes all time. We’re very proud of our victories against the sea.

These SH games never get old, as long as it is you doing them. Sometime I will have to watch someone else just for the heck of it. But, in no hurry to do that. A lot of your newer fans do not seem to know all the places you have been in these series.

"there's no defense against them, there's no way I can to know they are there" ... unless, o.c., you pull down the map marked "Minen 1" from the top left, to get to know at least the known minefields ... I must admit, though, it heavily depends on the mods you are using, if those maps even give you british minefields at all ... ;-)

Celtic Sea, is pronounced Keltic, not Seltic. It's named after the Celts (Kelts), not sports teams. Another good video though. Enjoying it as usual.

These are known as Vosper MTB's - they do have some Asdic capabilities. Four 18" Torpedoes and a top speed of 36 knots - short range of 700 miles.

I'm glad you were able to keep most of your torpedo reserves for your goals! Let's see what the Allies do when they realize that a U-boat sailed down the English coast and through their front yard via the Channel, sinking several thousand tons of ships, and into their back yard for some Kriegsmarine shenanigans.

yes the type XXI is an awesome boat & makes the English & Gibraltar channel crossings & any other port stalking patrols much easier exspecially if you alow the boat to drift with the current to, gosh if this uboat had been introduced to the war earlier then i think it would have been problematic for the allies. I would highly highly recommend venturing into the Irish Sea or at the very least the choke point of St George's Canal. You have an excellent chance of encountering lone high value, fast-moving targets, eg. large tankers, whale factory ships and troop transports, which only the Type XXI can really intercept with it's high submerged sprint speed. This late in the war, such an advanced boat like Germany's only operational Type XXI should be making it's utmost priority searching for and destroying high-value strategic targets. You know the capabilities of your submarine, so leverage these abilities to apply maximum impact through aggressive initiative. It's exciting hunting too!

Hey, Mr wolfpack, I know its probably too late to be getting this tip, but in case you decide to play SH3 again.. Something I just discovered with the ARB ui.. If you click that little circle button in between the depth gauge, and navigation wheel on the bottom right it gives you your depth under keel. Makes it much easier to get that info on the fly! Cheers.

0:30 I thought this whole series ended right here. But on a serious note, how did you not trigger this mine? I thought the Type XXIII, which is even smaller and quieter, had managed to trigger a mine and was sunk irl.

24:37 I can think of one other U-boat that could have done it, the Type 29H an unbuilt boat that was specifically designed with stealth in mind, a unique hull shape made it incredibly hard to detect on active sonar

PT boats did have a few light depth charges and being 1945 these probably had them, but without any real sonar trying to locate you is like trying to jump across a dark room and licking a stamp on the floor with your tongue.

Liking it (and thumbs up, as always) but def laughed out loud at 1.45 reference hitting a mine 'an issue for sure, if that happens we are boned'. He he, the expression is both old and contemporary. Traditionally, to be boned is to be cut apart and rendered into useful piles of meat, specifically, 'boning' is to further trim any useful scraps from off said bones. American slang and references to 'boner's aside, to describe something as 'bone' in HM forces would cover a wide range of 'annoying things' but to be 'boned for sure' he he there's no escaping that! A word that begins with eff and continues ucked would probably suffice, but 'bone' is entirely forces specific? Pax dude.

That minefield in the beginning probably German, as in Silent Hunter 5 there are three minefields out in the deep on approach to British ports. Along the coast near British harbours there are quite a few German mines & also in the middle of the channel outside Cherbourg.

It's 1945, you slip down the English Channel and sink a warship to boot....that is ballsy! But sadly this will probably be the last patrol before the war ends..it is Feb 21st 1945..little over a month to go before the war ends. However, you could get a special mission after the war to transport high ranking Nazis to Argentina! If I was Eichman or Mengele I would request that Wolfpack345 command the get-away U-Boot!

Have you thought about at a moderate speed, going at a slow time compression speed and using a periscope to look underwater? Maximum time consumption, yes. Effective? Probably

Hello Wolfpack, great content, I'm really enjoying your SH3 and IL2 content, it's simply amazing! I got myself the same modpack as you for SH3, but I'm wondering- how did you manage to make ARB WideGui 1920x1080 work in 1440p? When I try to run the game in this resolution, the new GUI is all messed up unfortunately.

Wolfpack just a question about your mod list; is "In install order" for the order you installed them to the SH3 MODS folder, or the installation order of mods activated through JSGME (if any)? I would hugely appreciate if you could clarify this, and I'm sure others would too. Further, if you are using JSGME an in-order 'Activated Mods' list would also be greatly appreciated if you don't mind, since I'm unsure which of the GWX JSGME activated mods you are using (again, if any). Please and thank you! Loving the content as always, keep it up!

I'm wondering if rather than the boat being over powered, i feel like maybe the channel is under populated. it seems like given the date in history, there would a destroyer or some such war ship almost every square km of the surface. seems like there would be almost no place you could even think about raising a schnorkel and not being spotted.

Under pressure from the United States, Argentina declared war on the Axis Powers on 27 March 1945, roughly a month before the end of World War II in Europe. Surfacing in an enemy port will not end well...

Like for example the Dunkirk evacuation, obviously you won't be able to see them all but it would be cool if you could see a few boats parked right outside, or what about the Normandy landings and seeing landing boats heading to the shore lines and maybe see the blitz he111 bombers fly ontop of you in the channel with destination london!

It sounds like a pretty interesting idea for sure. I have plans for my next series already but I will try to take part of more events in the future.
