19 years old, wow. With dementia, what a poor sweet old boy. You can imagine why he had aggression, how stressful, exhausting and terrifying it must be to have dementia in any capacity, but as an old dog, and how everything will feel so unknown and scary, what an amazing, sweet and kind woman. You can tell he's loved, they all are. What an angel of a woman

~ I know this vid is about dogs but many people with dementia become aggressive. My Dad has dementia, the most laid back, easygoing bloke has taken to yelling, swearing even bashed a fella coz he decided that resident was stealing stuff from his room. As frustrating as it is for the family - we have to remember it's very real for those with this cruel disease and yes, how scary, terrifying and confusing it must feel when you don't understand what's happening to you. Especially when that other resident has a skeleton key to access every room in the complex so you must guard your room even tho the locks have been changed in front of you just so you can have peace of mind but a skeleton key overrides everything! That's exactly how my Dad thinks... I have to laugh about it or I'll cry. Whoops, off on a tangent here...writing a novel! I love this little Senior Citz doggie family, bless their hearts.🐾💕🐾

Oh wow, that made me cry. I lost my adored, senior Collie, who also had evening dementia, in April and adopted an almost senior Bluetick Coonhound in July, she’s between 8 to 10. She had been on the streets, arrived at the shelter when an angel saw her, caught her and brought her in. She was emaciated and spent 6 months there when the staff brought her out to me and home she came. She didn’t know anything and was afraid of everything. Two months later she has blossomed into my couchmate and dearest friend who is now potty trained, can walk on a leash and come when called. Every day is a gift of joy with a senior rescued dog…and maybe because I’m an oldie too, I agree, I take nothing for granted and each moment of joy is deeply appreciated. Wonderful video.

You should adopt a dog, so many out there that need the love of a good person. I went yo adopt a small dog but now have a greyhound, she is the most sensitive, loveable, trouble free, mostly sleeps, dog I ever had. Many breed associations have a contact for rescues of a specific breed if that's what you want.

It's so sad to me when elderly animals lose their parents. It's the worst thing for both the animal and their parent that has had them for so long to be separated. I think it would be amazing if they could visit the original mom in the nursing home. But am so thankful that someone adopted him so that he has a loving home. Sad he had to live in the shelter for so long, but I suppose the timing needed to be right for the perfect new home to be aware that someone special was waiting for them.

Reminds me of our Chihuahua from my childhood. We got her when I was three (1964) and she made it to the age of 18 (1982), when I was 21. In her last year, she mainly slept, and only got up from her little bed to eat, drink, and relieve herself (she still knew to go to the sliding glass door and ask to be let out). Then she'd go back to her little bed and go back to sleep. She looked just like the one in this story. Only when she could no longer use her hind legs at age 18 did we have her euthanized at the vet. As is always the case, this was a very sad day, but especially since she was a fixture in my home from the age of three till the age of 21, basically forever.

I lost mine when she was 14yrs old. She was my little sidekick and I missed her so much. About 2 months later there was a woman giving away chihuahua / palmerainian pups mixed. As soon and she was eating solid foods I got to pick her up. I immediately loved her the day I got to hold her. The owner asked me for a name and she’d start calling the puppy the name. She has to be one of the best dogs I ever had. Very smart and sweet. It’s a blessing to have one of these dogs especially if you have plenty of time on your hands. Thanks for sharing your story

Almost fifty years of rescue dogs....you realise every day with them is precious, and the key is simple. It's not where you start, it's where you finish. And you get back even more live than you give. Adopting senior dogs is a gift. We adopted an elderly neglected and abused sheltie. The rescue would not take any money for him, as they gave him a fortnight to survive at best. But we got him better and he was with us for three and a half years. The best dig we ever had, bless him.

I know she may gradually develop dementia. This video has inspired me to find a way to understand and care for her if that unfolds in her later years. Meanwhile, I take her for 4-5 short walks a day and I taught her how to play for the first time. I make her healthy homemade food. I cried during this video but I am so happy for Joey and his companions that they were taken in and showered with love by such a wonderful family. I have an older chihauhau who is 10 now and though they are longer lived I absolutely dread the thought of being without her, she is my whole world. She is definitely my heart dog and she looks like Joey too 😌 Thank you so much for sharing your story 💞

Kudos to you for rescuing him ! I love the idea of senior rescues. I’d like to do that in the future. I’ve already rescued two senior dogs who lived their happily ever after lives with us. Unfortunately, one only lived one and ½ years and the other 2 and ½. Loved them dearly. The most grateful dogs I’ve had I think.

The little guys are just so outstanding. Senior animals require very expensive treatments. Otherwise I'd have loads of them to love and care for.

I adopted my first dog from a senior dog rescue and she's just the sweetest potato ever, fully trained and everything! Would definitely recommend, you might not have them as long as a puppy (definitely less of a mess!) but they deserve all the love and a happy retirement like anyone else

My Chihuahua, Max, is my first senior adoption. He's six years old. And so far aside from getting a little too excited when he's around other dogs, he's been a perfect companion. People make a huge mistake by passing over older dogs. Max was very well trained and, exceedingly grateful for the love and affection that he deserves.

He's so sweet, and his other little friend is too!! I have few senior dogs at work that live in our grooming parlor and there same way. I gave one of our senior Westie Pip a bath and when I was holding Pip he gave he a hug, my heart absolutely melted and he hugged me for about 5 mins, it was the most precious and sweetie thing I could ever experienced. I absolutely think a dogs love can change a life!💗
