Likely, because the B12 tests for blood levels, but NOT absorption, or Active B12 utilized by your body. The Active/Absorption test costs more, therefore NOT done routinely.

I thought I was dying too, possibly experiencing signs of early ALS. My B12 readings were within the normal range, although at the lower end. My neurologist immediately started me on B-12 injections while he investigated other possibilities. I'm over 60 so one item I don't believe they mentioned here is it's not uncommon for our B-12 levels to drop as we age. Have your B-12 levels checked as part of your yearly physicals.

GPs ARE failing us. I'm in the US and have not been able to get any help with this for 3 years now. I was diagnosed B12 deficient when I was 20 and took weekly injections and felt great. I've not been able to find anyone willing to test me and prescribe injections for over three years now. I have every symptoms of deficiency including pins and needles in my hands, arms and feet, tinnitus, dizziness, crushing fatigue, memory issues, etc. I have 2 known autoimmune disorders and feel pretty sure I'm not producing intrinsic factor. I can no longer work and don't feel safe to drive due to the dizziness and brain fog. I have a staggering gait like I'm intoxicated. I am barely able to manage day to day functions at home. Most days I feel like I'm dying inch by inch.

For 5 years I've had weird symptoms that seemed so unrelated. Dr's telling me I have an anxiety disorder. So I had to investigate myself. After asking and demanding b12 levels. For 5 years I've had episodes of palpitations, pins and needles in the hands and feet, time periods of severe fatigue. Stomach issues and get GI cleared me of my crohns being active. Glossitis, mouth ulcers and chelitis also a burning mouth. Weakness. For years I've had Dr's call me a hypochondriac, depressed or anxious. And after pushing I finally have an answer. Excited to start seeing changes as I'm adding b12 supplements. My b12 isn't "low enough" to warrant a b12 shot. The Dr's haven't apologized or anything. The only Dr's that's stood up for me is my OB and osteopath.

Some people need daily or every other day B12 injections. Fibromyalgia is just a set of symptoms, not a diagnosis. folic acid supplements can make B9 deficiency worse - which causes B12 issues. I use methylfolate only. Folinic acid would be the next best option for supplements I think.
@lib5216
@lib5216 3 ай бұрын
Never take folic acid, it makes things worse, sadly drs do not know or agree, they're just not educated about it, but you must avoid it and all food fortified with it (eg, most wheat flour, some yeast flakes etc etc) - take it in the natural form methyl B folate - however some people can't take methyl donors so may need folinic acid, (and also - rather than methylcobalamin B12, take hydroxo or adeno B12). Many people have a problem with the MTHFR gene, a polymorphism which reduces absorption of B vits up to 70% less, depending on which variant you have as some are more severe than others. Dr's who know about MTHFR think folic acid taken during pregnancy causes autism symptoms in those whose mothers took it.. I think it is very likely and also that it causes many neurological issues which get progressively worse... Just my opinion.

So i had been sick since more than 16 months. I go to doctors and they will just stick it to my hypothyroidism. Any way after one year i had blood in stool and they made a gastro and colonoscopy. They ended up saying that it's autoimmune gastritis which happens due to pernicious anemia. Anyway my doctor doesn't want to prescribe vitamin b 12 because my Vitamin b12 in blood tests is perfect. However when i read through i found that there are some cases that vitamin b12 deficiency remain unrecognisable and you continue having this horrible symptoms without getting a real diagnosis.
