You know what is frustrating to think about? People prank call 911 and probably say stupid stuff like “uhhhh can I get a pizza” and because they wanted a quick laugh, the next time the dispatcher hears something non police related they might incorrectly write it off as a prank call. @g0d5m15t4k38 ай бұрын
This hits me somewhere in the feels. The Dispatcher leads with more Empathy than I've ever witnessed outside of a Therapist office. Listening to the Dispatcher calmly explain "This isn't where you order pizza..." instead of hanging up, getting mad, or accusative. His ability to even be open in a circumstance where he could be pranked. The training to Listen and keep the caller on the line is what allowed him to make the realization that this was serious and real.

Dispatchers are trained to LISTEN and trust their gut feeling. They are also trained to ask yes/no questions in case someone is in the room with the 911 caller. Calls like this are also played during training. All 911 calls are treated as REAL emergencies until proven otherwise. I much prefer how we do things in the UK. Our 999 emergency services operators are much better trained, the control rooms are better equipped and professional. They are very polite and efficient, we wouldn’t be without them. You dial 999, BT handle your call and dispatch you to the emergency service required. Then you speak to that service’s control centre for your area. You should all listen to the heroic 999 calls made over here, on KZfaq. Some shining examples of bravery and fantastic communication; such as the children who have called and the deaf man who tapped to respond to the operator.

Credit where credit is due. Both the dispatcher and the woman were as cool as they come. For her to be that calm on the call and not get too rattled at first when it sounded like the dispatcher might hang up is really amazing. Yup. Men deal with a lot of issues (which, especially these days, are in sum more harmful than those women face, but that's such a hateful and untrue thing to say); but there's no fuss made abt it so who would know. "Only women have it bad, men live like kings & are adored & respected".

@@Insert_Name_Here908 You must not be aware what some 911 dispatchers are like. You can find videos on KZfaq of bad 911 dispatchers that have mocked people in situations, or even hung up on people and that person later dies because they didn't get any help. It sucks, but there are unfortunately judgemental and incompetent people in every job field.

Stout Lager I worked as a 911 dispatcher 20 years ago and it was part of the training then. There was a recording we listened to where a woman called in and said she was going to be late for work. The dispatcher caught on but by the time officers had arrived, her estranged husband had killed her, her parents, and 2 children. He then shot one officer and put the gun to his own head.

Creative Common Yes it happened about 30 years ago (the actual crime). And strangely enough when I told my wife about it she had known the family for several years when she was younger. She said she stopped going to their house because the father was giving her a very weird vibe. And to be clear on the training, I had to study calls and what to do for 6 months before even being allowed to talk to anyone, and another six months of personally supervised call taking before being put in my own. The amount of people that call with stupid questions can burn you out fast though, when you can see 30+ people waiting to get through on 911 and people are asking things like what is the number to the trash department? After you just got done telling an 11 year old that the police are coming and trying to keep her calm as she hides in the closet while her mom is being raped 5 feet away. I believe 8 of my old coworkers killed themselves. I got out when I started realizing what that job was doing to me.
