Why does almost every victim say they were smart? They weren't smart enough to do a bit of research. They weren't smart enough to contact the US Embassy in Turkey when their supposed fiance was in trouble. They weren't smart enough to run a background check on the person before sending money. They weren't smart enough to keep video chatting with the person .They weren't smart enough to know an individual doesn't get a contract to build overseas - those type of contracts go to large architectural firms who have experience in overseas projects.

I suspect that scammers do this order to help make the scam work better. If the woman is receiving affection from both her so-called boyfriend and her so-called stepchild, that will make her feel love and more willing to send money. It’s another type of love bombing. Excessive and inappropriate levels and types of affection designed to make the victim do what the scammer wants.

I get invitations from scammers all the time, and it amuses me sometimes to play along for a while. One said he was from Venice, Italy, so I texted something in Italian. He texted back that he actually left Italy as a teenager and grew up in the Philippines, so his Italian was rusty. I asked him if he'd ever been to the famous Salamanca National Park in the Philippines, and he enthusiastically said yes, it was wonderful, great facilities there. There is no Salamanca National Park; I made it up. I got the name from "Breaking Bad"! Always assume they're lying. You can lie, too.

I sometimes play little games with them too. About 2 days into chatting, one guy told me thst he's an entrepreneur. I pushed to meet him and he immediately informed me that he was about to leave for Dubai for 6 weeks to conduct business. He wanted to chat while he was in Dubai and meet when he returned. I said, let me know when you get back and can meet. Never heard from him again. What a joke.

He is being SO honest that he admits to using someone else’s pictures. Then he adds an explanation that makes him look like a victim: “I had to use these pictures because I always get hacked. Poor me, but I am being super honest with you!! I am actually telling you I used Andrew’s pictures. Isn’t that the epitome of “trustworthy?” I am so frustrated with the Internet!! Look at what they do to me!! That’s why I don’t want my information or pictures out there!!” 🙄 No, that’s actually the epitome of lying but, because of the manipulative tactics and logical fallacy, it sounds like “honesty.” 🙄🙄

You can build feelings from anticipation. That’s normal. The problem is ignoring red flags before making important decisions. I once matched on Bumble with one of these romance scammers. “She” strung me along for about a month before I called “her” bluff. I said we need to meet up in person or go our separate ways and that I had no interest in cryptocurrency. I never heard from “her” after that.

Oh, yes. They frequently do. That's a whole other scam. I received letters (pre email and social media) from convicts trying to start up a correspondence and I'm sure the goal was to get money. I never responded to any of them. It did freak me out as to how they got my name and contact information, though.

Someone telling them they’re beautiful and asking about their feelings. I mean, come on. I had the "hey" syndrome too, from anonymous men who wanted to hook up on Facebook. Ridiculous. It's comic relief to me, and I post some of their requests to expose them and ridicule them. The thing is, these women are always AMAZED that they like the same things, even though it's ALL on their Facebook page! How silly and naive can you be? As P. T.
