Very instructive video and beautiful spoon! The different ways to use knife and hook knife are well illustrated. Nice to see Bo's hook knife in action. Thanks for sharing your skills.

Birch wood is the best. Green wood from birch could be carved almost like a cheese and it is hard when dries.

Awesome video, i have some questions though. How quickly after felling the tree do you use the wood? Eg, did you leave it to dry a little or is it completely green still! And is it a problem if it has dried a bit already? Also, after carving it, do you let it dry before oiling it? And if not do you then let it dry before using it? Lastly, do you have any recommendations regarding the size of the log compared the target size of the spoon? I've used a smaller branch for a spoon of a similar size but the wood looked quite different. Looking forward to your insights, anyway thanks a lot, keep up the good work!

Hello Sam, It's the longest question that I've ever got on youtube :) First of all, I use the green wood between 20 to 30 % moisture content. Also, It's not so problem using the dried wood, but it's so harder than green wood when you carve it. I usually do oiling it, after drying. Lastly, I used about 12cm diameter birch log in this video. Hope the answers help you and thank you for watching it !

@@skogsdraken that's perfect actually, thanks for clearing all that up. It will be of tremendous help when I get back to carving ( I cut hand my hand 2 weeks ago and had to get 9 stitches and wait for the muscle to recover .. ) I had already experienced dryer wood being more difficult to work with. What do you use to check the humidity of the wood? I heard somewhere these humidity gauges can be quite expensive, or is this more of an estimation? Those will be my last question, I promise ;-)

Ohh,,first of all, I hope your wounds heal quickly. You can find the "LCD Digital Wood Moisture Meter" on Amazon and you can purchase items about 30USD. Always work safely!

Walnut oil reduces the permeability of water and food seasonings and protects the wood surface. Raw flaxseed oil is also a good oil.
